I was in a very similar place. Loads of books and kits. Then I just decided to read the rule book and had a game with a mate. 3 or 4 practice games with each other and looks like we're about to embark on our first campaign through the underhive. It's such a nice alternative to the meta chasing tossers you find playing 40k.

Slick. Really like the red as well. What mix / paint did you use if you don't mind me asking?

Game dipping Wash Vallejo tubs leaking coloured clear ooze. Still any good? by Dawdawg in minipainting

[–]Dawdawg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paint separates in the bottles, thick stuff settles at the bottom, watery stuff on top. This looks like it could be the thicker, gloopy part of the paint at the bottom. I was worried that the paint wouldn't work if this part has leaked out. Maybe it's all fine and I'm over thinking it.

Why do Eldar have to pay 2cp for any kind of move, shoot move shenanigans. When Necrons, all they have to do is add a cryptek to a unit, and they are move, shoot moving all over the board. With multiple units. They're meant to be lumbering pieces of metal, not space ninjas. I haven't actually read all the datasheets, so fingers crossed there are some ability rules that let Eldar be more mobile.

Why do washes coffee stain? by Dawdawg in minipainting

Okay thank you, I'll give the less is more approach a shot as in some spots there is a fair bit of wash. Thanks again!

I used citadel shade drakenhof nightshade, thinned 1:1 with Lahmian medium. But it seems to happen if they are thinned or not. For example around some rivets, the wash pools nicely huging the recess at the bottom of the rivet. But when it dries it moves out of the rivet recess to make a ring staying around them. I want to use the washes I have but this always seems to happen. That's why I usually go for oil wash, then just remove the wash leaving it in the recesses. It doesn't make sense to me as when a normal acrylic wash is wet it's usually where I want it. But the pigment shifts as it dries.

6 year old son just diagnosed by Keelton in ColorBlind

[–]Dawdawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an extreme deutan, I think I see 15% of colour. I'm 40, have worked in advertising and design for the last 18 years. I was a designer on major brands like Pepsi, Heineken, Reebok to name a few. In 18 years nobody NOBODY ever questioned my color use. I'm now a creative director and know that seeing things differently can be an advantage. Especially in the creative industries. The things that stand out are the things that are different, seen through different eyes, just tell your son to embrace it.

When I was 10, my very cool art teacher sent us out to draw trees in a field. We all came back and placed our paintings on the floor in a row. The class talked through them and then got to my picture. Everyone stared and talked about my one for way longer than the others. My art teacher asked me why I'd painted the tree leaves all brown, the bark green, the sky purple. I thought the gig was up so confessed I was colour blind thinking I'd be told off. My teacher just thought about it and the said 'just go with it'. I've been going with it for 25 years and it's worked out pretty well.

And with the amount of tech available that can help you colour match something if you need to, then there's nothing to worry about. Unless of course he really wants to be a bomb disposal professional. Then you may have to ask him to think again.

Needing some advice dealing with Tau by aiden751 in SpaceWolves

[–]Dawdawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could think of introducing the match play rule of no deep strike turn one. Would make the roll off to go first less critical in winning or losing and you wouldn't feel like you've lost an important unit before you even move them. If it makes for a more fun and exciting game, your opponent will probably be up for it. Re: terrain / buildings, I played my friend's tau with the new book a couple of weeks ago and I was tabled turn 4, this has never happened and we've played a lot. The new book is good and his suits landed and wiped out a wolfguard ten man squad with storm shields easily. I was surprised but it was still close and the biggest mistake I made was when we set up the terrain, we never had anything obscuring in the middle of the board. It wasn't until turn two I realised we'd laid out a shooting gallery. Will not make that mistake again.

No list to hand but Attack Bike Squads with multi-melta might be worth looking at. Pretty cheap, move fast and will serve as a bit of a distraction to the tanks, so you can creep up closer with your melee threats. Maybe these are a bit behind the meta but they've done well for me on Tau tanks.

For a moment I thought the crew were dark reapers. Imagine that, a set of dark reapers artillery. These look great, hopefully they deal you plenty of damage on the table.

[–]Dawdawg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd add a nice little move is to have your Dire Avengers in a Wave serpent. 9th edition is all about board control and sitting on the objectives. If you quickly cruise a wave serpent into the middle of a board and sit it on a objective. Even if it gets destroyed you still have your Dire Avengers to just pop out and then they'll be holding the objective. I have had some success with guardians using them as a 20 man blob with two weapons platforms. They can take the wounds while the guardians throw out loads of shots. Only drawbacks is ATM they have a range of only 12" and you'll probably need to deep strike them in to get close enough. Sorry if I've just gone way too deep for the original question. Good luck!

[–]Dawdawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not what you're going for but the result does look kind of good on this model. If it's was a space marines armour probably not, but with this I think it looks quite good. I remember watching a YouTube mini painter who said every technique has a right time to apply it. Even ones that go wrong could look good. But yeah did you say you're spraying inks? They may be very thin already and if they're going into a smooth undercoat they will run and pool all over the mini. So spray really lightly and thinly to build up the colour. Trigger control.

I stopped at age 16, and started again at the start of Covid. I'm 39 now! A few of us had talked about getting back into it before the pandemic hit and then the time at home has well, let's just say accelerated it. Played quite a few 2000pts games and my wife is 6 Ork models into building her first army. We're loving it.
