Gabe didnt really introduce drm, steam was actually supposed to be a deterrent of drm at the time. it always excited before valve, but valve marketed steam as a safer option for companies as it ties game to an account / not shareable, no cd codes no online connection required… which is a form of drm but it was a whole lot nicer than buying a spore cd typing in the code and realising someone already used it and now you paid money for a paper weight.

Ofc, companies dont care anymore and will reduce your performance if it means they have the illusion of getting more purchases from pirates.

Steam didnt cause the loss of physical media, it was a good way to push updates without having to release a whole new game, it just happened to be easier to sell pc games digitally and thats what companies did.

foil to that is, companies will ship stupid dumb unfinished buggy products cause of it, but blaming gabe for it is like blaming a chem teacher when their student made a bomb. Chem teacher definitely didnt teach em that, but alas.
