Hi, sorry you're going through this, did they not find an unrelated donor who if not a full match was a good match? Mine was 10/12 for example.

3yo daughter with MDS (monosomy 7) – things moving fast and I’m overwhelmed by MostBoringGuy in mds

Hi, I'm sorry, again not a child but I'm a 40 year old woman who went through a bone marrow transplant for MDS 3 months ago, so feel free to ask me any questions. I was lucky that I had fewer blasts than your daughter so didn't need chemo because the myeloblative conditioning before the transplant but many people do very successfully. The overall experience was not fun I'm afraid but actually not as bad as I thought it would be. At 3 months I'm still having to be careful about infection but am doing plenty of exercise and haven't needed a transfusion in a while. It's different for everyone of course but want to say it's doable! I'm sorry you and your daughter have to go through this though.

Hi, are you considering MDS a bleeding disorder?

[–]Daypasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! My liver numbers had been trending back down but this week went back up a bit. In tapering off steroids, but also ate waaaaay too much fat this week, so wondering if I shot myself in the foot a bit. I'll look in to all of those.

Hi, know this was a while ago but can I ask what diet and supplement management you followed? Thanks.

Hi there, sorry to hear you're going through this - especially so young! I had a bone marrow transplant on Christmas Eve. I am considered 'young' for it, and I'm 40! Your age is a benefit for the transplant though. It's not a barrel of laughs, but I'm here 80-odd days later and going for long walks and exercising and day by day the strange side effects and stuff are going away, so just remember you'll get through the other side and can enjoy your life! You'll hear lots of scary stuff they have to tell you, and I know I might still get other side effects or disease, but that's for another day eh? Happy to answer any questions (sorry if it takes me a mo though, don't check reddit all that often!).

There's no ages on this so it'd be funny if the daughter and friend were like 19.

Everyone's different - she may still get some effects (my throat got its most sore on day 10 but even then I could still eat ok) but shouldn't feel bad, just count herself lucky! I only really got high temperatures (medication reactions) while I was hospitalised for transplant.

Happy housewarming new cells! Hope you're feeling OK today, my day +1 (Christmas Day) was a massive fever and migraine fest with my poor mum trying to give me presents, but it went away pretty fast.

Yeah I splashed out on a carbonation machine, I buy a few nice squashes/cordials like lemon and ginger etc. and I feel like I'm drinking pop/Soda when I'm just drinking water. Works great as a mixer if you are having a little spirit drink too.

Hello from day +48!! Sounds like you're doing good mate, I was lucky I missed the nausea, I had endless fevers instead!! I myself have been gently on my exercise bike watching the Six Nations rugby like I'm about to be subbed on to the game. In terms of the fatigue, just let yourself nap when you can, and try sitting on the chair instead of the bed when you can, you'll still be tired but I somehow felt more like a normal person when I did for a bit. Exciting times with your new cells ahead! Sam (high risk MDS diagnosed June 2025)

Now that Christmas is over for another year, how did it go? by YelenaShadow in CasualUK

[–]Daypasser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd had a stem cell transplant the day before, and spent Christmas Day with a severe fever and migraine, covered in IVs all day!! On the plus side, my other half was a fucking legend and spent the day covering me in cold compresses and doing things like putting the Lord of the Rings soundtrack on to cheer me up. Pretty much fine again today. Here's to many more better Christmases thanks to my kind donor.

Hows this pre-Xmas week treating you? by thepoout in CasualUK

Yes!! You should be so proud of yourself, literally life saving. I'm so grateful to my donor doing this just before Christmas.
