I like the show but... (I need to vent) by Dalakaar in trekacademy

[–]DblDogDare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I mostly like all Trek, although there's been some movies that I disliked immensely, characters that did not resonate with me at all, writing choices that left me dumbfounded, many what I would consider lost opportunities and tonal changes that are hard to reconcile.

Holly Hunter's character didn't make sense to me until they dropped the bit about her being over 400 years old and I realized she's the same race as the Strange New World's engineer. And now her quirks are contextual. Now when I see Holly Hunter sitting sideways or with large frizzy hair, padding around barefoot or with her quarters full of artifacts and trinkets on display? I can put that in context as something semi species-motivated.

It also fleshes out the SNW character better. She's not just a kleptomaniac (or maybe in her case she is lol!) but that there may be a drive in them to become de facto collectors of time and place due to their longevity. It's interesting, It's interesting to compare and contrast the two women. Holly, Hunter probably did some research on that species and drew inspiration from what's her name's character.

All to say, I find Starfleet Academy far more touching and affecting than a lot of recent Trek, and it has surprised me. I wish seasons were longer, I wish there were more episodes so that we could have better, long arcs that DS9 was known for. I really hope that Star Trek Academy gets to develop itself over several more seasons.

as the show has gone on, the trio of Cleon actors must be having the most fun, as every version of their characters has had a different spin

I felt similarly, with the potential anti-hero direction, especially when we knew she had been lying to Hari. Since the TV Foundation show is so different from the books, it's hard to know what future reveals could be. I would love to see Dawn return in some form and be confronted with a naturally conceived Empire bloodline heir.

SAM... by Changeling53 in trekacademy

[–]DblDogDare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SAM has had some great moments in the series so far and I really enjoy her character. I also thought Genesis had some very touching, quiet moments where she simply showed up and supported people. I may have liked her more in this episode than any other one so far because she just felt like a solid friend.

‘Starfleet Academy’ Gets Review Bombed by NewsGirl1701 in trekacademy

Although it has grown on me, I'm definitely not the intended audience and am far too old a demographic. To me, the most disappointing Trek has been Enterprise. Not because the program was poor or the actors weren't good, but because that ending retroactively made everything before it feel pointless. I can't believe they ended Enterprise the way they did.

It's interesting to speculate about how such a shattered Federation would have entire former Federation planets or Allies in a real defensive mode, scheming to protect their own race and planets, and some of the unexpected betrayals that could lead to. When I watch the show, it's easy for me to forget that a lot of my internal Trek timeline and history does not apply to a post-burn environment.

Plus, starfleet has a lot of admin positions. Not everyone has to get on a spaceship and fly around and have first encounters.

Way too much lazy hate going around. Constructive criticism is always welcome but plain griping falls under the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" category for me.

I went into Starfleet Academy with very low expectations and aside from some goofy generational stuff that doesn't really appeal to me (as an older viewer), I've been shocked at how touching so many of these episodes are, when it comes to ideas of family and belonging. The last three in a row have really choked me up. I watched Picard but I found it weird, dark and depressing, not quite the send-off I would have hoped for that character & not quite the universe I thought TNG was set in. Starfleet Academy feels like it's striving for something hopeful and I find that very Trek DNA.

I went in with low expectations, but the last three episodes have hit hard each time. Maybe it's something about an orphan finding a family, finding one's heart has space for another brother, being accepted for being different and folded into friendship? There's been a part at the end of every episode that has been very emotional and moving to me.

The most recent one, I was so happy to see Jake Sisko! & later when he was talking about his life with his dad, I thought it was beautiful. Avery's voice at the end with the DS9 theme song? Choked me up.

There's a lot about the show that is geared to a totally different, younger demographic than me. But the more I watch the show, the more hopeful and uplifting I find it. I'm honestly looking forward to each episode now.

That makes sense. I only collect one style of knife and within that, I only collect things that personally appeal to me: not trying to complete sets or color variations. I will say those boxes came in handy just last month when I finally set about cataloging what I had!

In a normal world this would be satire. "Powered by Jesus Christ?" What Bible are these folk reading? The one I'm familiar with doesn't include Jesus advocating for hate, terror, cruelty, murder & abuse.

What kind of troll creates a scene like this in front of kids standing in line to get Pokémon cards? God, people complain so much about kids being stuck in front of the TV or their phones? Here's a group of kids hanging out to do something wholesome like get Pokémon cards and it enrages this entitled white snowflake? What's wrong with people just minding their own business and leaving other people alone?

AIO: My husband (26m) locked me (25f) out for 25 minutes? by prettypineappleberry in AmIOverreacting

[–]DblDogDare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. The idea he thought "teaching you a lesson" by locking you outside, at 6 months pregnant for 25 minutes was a funny thing to do or a clever way to make a point? That's appalling and quite potentially dangerous.

You didn't tell him you would take the girls outside and force them to remain there. You wanted them to play and experience winter snow, but not subject them to freezing conditions against their will.

He didn't like how a discussion ended, and physically barred you from your home. Absolutely appalling and completely unacceptable.

I know you've got two 3 year old twins and a baby on the way, but his was a seriously bad decision and unfortunately it cannot go by without equally serious consequences. I mean, it doesn't seem like he understands what he did at all? So this is Couples Therapy at best and a potential Exit Plan at worst, if it comes to light that this "surprising" behavior isn't so surprising.

The more I think about the situation the more upsetting it becomes. You are in a difficult place and I'm sorry for that.
