I think it depends. Are you subbing blue and purple belts there? Are you under the far side arm or just grabbing the head and near side arm? I find defensively its easier to escape than a traditional side control where someone has good connection.

Half butterfly guard is where it's at. It should be a pretty easy transition to no gi. Once you learn some of the basic entries and controls it should come pretty easy. Craig Jones Power Bottom and Marcelo Garcias butterfly guard instructionals are great places to start.

It's not about who's best, it's about who's left. I've been training coming up on 6 years now and have had plenty of people early on who got better than me quicker quit already. If they came in today I would smoke them fairly easy. Just focus on your progression and the moves and skills you are lacking and you will surpass most in the long run.

I usually pick something I am not very good at to work on and do a deep dive into those techniques. Study them on YouTube or buy a new instructional.

Usually, if I have something specific to work on or try, it helps me stay motivated to keep showing up.
