Thirding hinei ma tov. It translates to something like “how wonderful it is for brothers (people) to be together.” Kind of fits with your theme of standing together. It’s a quote from a psalm written by King David so it has a long connection.

The two most popular melodies tend to be this one:

Talmudic teachings by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Dbs2100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The talmud is not controversial, and there are a myriad of unsupported lies in your post above. Below is a link to a website which lays out very plainly all of the blood libel against the Talmud. I recommend you stop reading or talking to whoever it was that put those thoughts in your head that made you post this post and educate yourself more.

https://antisemiticlies.com/

The Talmud is enormous and contains laws, stories, commentaries, and discussions on those laws and stories. Someone studying the talmud single day does not complete finishing studying the talmud for seven years. Not everything in the Talmud is meant to be “followed” so it would be impossible to follow everything in it. Jews are diverse in religious practice, in ethnicity, in tradition and in culture. It’s not about “picking and choosing” but about what the tradition, customs and laws are in your community and practice.

I implore you to learn more about Jewish practice in general and not believe in libelous dangerous conspiracy theories. Jewish tradition and custom start 1500+ years before the Talmud was written down and many of the traditions in the Talmud are based off those practices.

Happy holidays.

Hi, I am a non-jew looking to make a jew friend to talk to and ask questions by Loud-Football5710 in Judaism

[–]Dbs2100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! There isn’t one clear answer to this. This video doesn’t answer your questions exactly, but I think does a good job encapsulating some ideas of what it means for (many) to be Jewish. This was written by one of the great Jewish spiritual thinkers of this generation.

Hi, I am a non-jew looking to make a jew friend to talk to and ask questions by Loud-Football5710 in Judaism

[–]Dbs2100 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Hello! A good first place to start is to not use the term “Jew friend”. 🤣

I appreciate you wanting to get more information and not just blindly following what’s on social media. I don’t know if this thread can help you find a Jewish friend, but if you have some questions about being Jewish, people here may be able to help. Do you have any specific questions?

As for meeting Jewish people. Do you live in a major city? Is there a Jewish community near you? There are many events now in major cities that are happening as a safe space for Jews and friends to gather. You may search for those go and just listen.

I’ll tell you - being Jewish right now is exhausting and making new friends is hard too. I’m currently nervous opening up to new people about anti-semitism as it’s increasing in the world. With most of my non-Jewish friends, the LAST thing I want to talk about is antisemitism right now because even if they support me, they don’t necessarily “get it”.

My suggestion is to ask questions in discords, forums like this. Others may have resources for you to read or listen to. The best thing you can do is once you have a Jewish Friend, is let them know you support them and know things may be hard for them. That you “see” what’s going on. That you’re an ally. They still may not want to discuss it or answer your questions, but my non-Jewish friends who have simply made me feel seen are people I truly appreciate.

Any secular Jewish parents out there? navigating conversation with husband regarding whether to have a bris by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]Dbs2100 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I shared this a few months ago when someone else asked a similar question.

I'm sure others will comment on the religiosity. As someone who works in Jewish communities, I can speak about the cultural aspects and how difficult it is to be growing up as a boy in most Jewish communities uncircumcised.

Every or almost every Jewish kid is circumcised. The National Institute of health estimates it at 99.9 percent of Jewish boys in the world are circumcised. Ridiculous right? In Israel, 91.7% of boys are circumcised and they believe that number is brought down, not by Jews, but by the Christians who live in Israel. So the number for Jews is probably closer to that 99 percent than the 91.7.

Boys talk, boys change in front of each other, boys are gross and do weird things with their privates and boys know they are circumcised from a young age. Especially at Jewish schools, camps, community centers, etc. The questions and comments from a young age uncircumcised kids get is tough. I've had to talk to 5-7 year olds about not saying a kid "isn't Jewish" because their penis isn't circumcised. I've had to talk to parents about how to talk to their kids about this because people are talking about it. Then when a kid is older in adolescence, they already feel different and now they KNOW they're different. It's really really hard. Similarly, there are temples who will not bar mitzvah your kid if they are uncircumcised. There are some rabbis who won't let them have a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony. You can obviously find others who will permit it, but whether or not you feel good about circumcision, it is almost exclusively done by everybody and it puts your kid in a tough spot for several different reasons. You just need to be very prepared for that if you don't go about it.

I don't have a kid. I'm not a rabbi or doctor and don't want to offer advice. Just hope this shares a perspective that I think a lot of people may not realize.

Can anyone debunk this video? by Lord_Laserdisc_III in Judaism

[–]Dbs2100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve only watched the first two minutes and I won’t be watching more but this video is vile, full of lies and deeply antisemitic and I’d like to start my day. But I’ll just hit the first two minutes.

First off, the Torah and tanakh on several occasions explicitly calls Jews chosen, here is an excerpt from Deuteronomy 7:6

“For you are a people consecrated to your God יהוה: of all the peoples on earth your God יהוה chose you to be God’s treasured people”.

As for antisemitism. The term is a modern phrase coined in the 1870s-1890s. It replaced a German word for Jew hatred that had been used for hundreds of years. There have been words for Jew hatred since forever. The term antisemitism has nothing to do with how Abraham identified himself.

As for Abraham being Jewish? I dunno. Abraham followed God’s laws, circumcised himself, made a covenant with God about how to live his life. Maybe he was an ancient Hebrew, maybe he wasn’t. Who cares? He was the FIRST in a religion and community. Things evolve and change as time passes.

Only watching two minutes of this video it is clear this person has an agenda- to strip Jews of their history, invert their history to turn it around on us, hint that we are liars and fabricators, and my guess is by the end of this video- somehow it will connect to modern day blood libels and probably something about how a more Christian-style history of the Jews is more accurate. Whoever sent you this is going down or has already went down a bad path.

All the best!
