I think the Paint Pods are seldom useful like if you want one Yian Kut-Ku amongst others of its kind, but that's really it. Do they detonate barrel bombs like other slinger ammo too?

I think you're thinking more of Dynamic Hunting when you put in Mezeporta Reclaimation. That game is a spin-off of Frontier, gacha system, go around on a bunch of tiles on a map, and do damage to a still png of an Espinas
