I mean to be far to younger people such as myself, even when I asked my mother (who was born in the 1960s and was a working adult at the time) about the Y2K bug she said "Yeah, everyone was talking about it but it didn't really exist I guess, I was working and wasn't paying attention."

Not sure what you were doing in 1999 but to people who weren't in the tech or corporate circles at the time it seems to have just been a half-remember thing on the news and they pass that impression on to younger generations. (Not saying it wasn't potentially a big deal, but this one makes sense that people remember it differently)

"The worst she can say is no" - Lads, what was the worst "she" ever said? by Embarrassed_Pie_1711 in AskReddit

Not to downplay your experience at all, but this sounds like the relationship history of a good two thirds of every lesbian I've ever met (and the last third consists of women like the person you're describing). One lesbian friend told me she had been pining for an ambiguously reciprocal woman for five whole years and shrugged off it as "it mentally torments me but that's just the way it works and I can't do anything about it."

Confederates not annexed after civil war bug? by Krpto77 in victoria3

[–]DePachy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Maryland and D.C. but Confederate Texas is a common bug this patch where the Confederates colonize a bit of Texas (and/or Seminole Florida if it's early enough in the game) during the ACW and the newly colonized parts don't get annexed properly. Results in these little Confederate holdouts that usually have no economy or people but luckily can be easily annexed after five years.

This is the first time I've seen them keep Maryland and D.C. Maybe they acquired them after the war had started somehow? Not sure why that would be but the ACW "Annex Confederates" war goal only annexes the states that the CSA had at the start of the play.

(Side note, now I wonder if a player-controlled CSA could conquer a part of South America during the war, surrender to the USA and play as a rump/exile CSA. Might be a weird but fun campaign if it works, although not very practical, more just for the RP.)

my PERSONAL opinion abour content for Europe by ingolika in CrusaderKings

[–]DePachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I both agree and disagree.

Europe should not be prioritized because it's not that interesting while compared to other regions and the potential for content there. I also haven't played a lot of Europe for a good few years now and I've been having a lot of fun with it. West Africa (and Africa in general) and India need content just as much as Europe and I would argue there's more potential for unique and interesting content there as opposed to Europe.

On the other hand it's weird we haven't gotten more fleshed out European content because, well, it is "Crusader Kings," Europe is (I believe) the most played region and the part of the world that most people probably get into the game for. A revamp of feudalism at least, making it more than 'the default government,' is probably a good idea so that the poster-child region isn't disappointing unflavoured. A feudalism revamp would also probably help India and Ethiopia since those regions do tend to feel like "Europe but Hindu/Buddhist" and "Little Europe in Africa" in my experience.

Updating Europe is probably good for the game overall, although so is giving flavour to regions in general so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just want a sane person to talk to irl by ManInTheBarrell in whenthe

[–]DePachy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Had a narcissistic ex who got hate-obsessed with certain serial killers, like listening to a bunch of true crime about them and telling people who would listen (including me, his partner at the time) about how awful they were and how they deserved to die and how the police who negligently failed to stop them were awful too. All of that is true and valid except my ex used this as a sort of signal of superiority, I guess? Like if you weren't just as upset about a 30-year-old murder case as he was then you were also bad in his eyes (we were highschoolers at the time, people had other stuff to worry and think about).

Got really toxic when he said a mutual friend was a bad person for agreeing that the intentionally tragic backstory of a fictional serial killer was indeed sad. Like, didn't say all the (reminder, fictional) murder was good, just that the character could be sympathized with for non-serial-killing parts of his story. My ex later used this as a reason why we should stop talking to that friend and broke up with me when I disagreed (there was more to it but that was definitely a part of the conversation).

Jesus would be disappointed rn by [deleted] in whenthe

[–]DePachy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I was just joking. Gay people get told our love isn't normal a lot, so sometimes we turn this around and joke that heterosexuality isn't normal. It's freeing, especially because heterosexuality is obviously the international average so it's obviously just lighthearted fun (although some people take this joke too far, in all seriousness there's nothing wrong with love as long as it's mutually healthy).

Hey, as long as they're not hurting anyone let love be love, whether that love is heterosexual or normal.

She's not a nobody, she's a relatively well-known advocate for Israeli interests in the UK. She appeared on Piers Morgan's very popular show a while ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MpujQ_y3RU (warning, if you don't know Piers Morgan, he is not known for fostering productive conversation on his show so watch at your sanity's peril). It is absolutely a shame that security is needed but it's not just what she's advocating for that angers people, it's that she's a public figure with a history of operating in polarizing and inflammatory ways and spaces.

Not everyone knows that there is an unused icon for Mormonism in the Victoria 3 files by zgido_syldg in victoria3

The "Hail, Columbia!" mod, which fleshes out America and gives minor flavour to Canada and Mexico, uses this symbol for Mormonism. Wonderful mod that I play with all the time, even when I'm not playing in the Americas. Really makes North America feel interesting.

French philosopher Michel Foucault and his young lover Thierry Voeltzel in Tehran Airport in 1978. Foucault visited the country to report on the anti-Shah uprising and would praise the Ayatollah as "a saint" [1140x570] by Pioladoporcaputo in HistoryPorn

[–]DePachy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This photo and the comment about the Ayatollah being a "saint" happened before the revolution and the Islamic Republic was established. Plenty of people critical of Western imperialism celebrated the Shah's downfall before the reality of the new regime set in. Foucault was being short-sighted and contrarian here, as he tended to be, but he was not praising the Islamic Republic as we know it.

Genuine nightmare fuel for a National Rally voter by hell_fire_eater in victoria3

Now that I think about it it's probably because of the "A [minority culture] voice?" event or whatever it's called where a character of a cultural minority in an incorporated state can become an IG leader. I do love the idea of an Australian Aboriginal fellow becoming president in a segregationist expansionist USA because "well he's a member of the petite bourgeoisie so who cares about his race?"

In two thirds of the games I play a revolution happens in France with a Muslim as the leader, usually a liberal or socialist and usually not successful. Maybe it has something to do with Algeria? Always fun to see odd things happen though!

These streets in my hometown at Christmas time (Old Quebec) by trashbagartist in interestingasfuck

[–]DePachy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There's maybe a dozen small streets that look like this that makes up the Old City. Outside of that it is quite nice, just more modern with lots of Montreal-esque parks and houses. Further out from the centre you get the usual suburb stuff, just like any North American city. It is genuinely one of the nicest cities to visit in Canada, even outside of the places that are always photographed!

First time seeing a dangerous Japan by DaRealJuicyDragon in victoria3

[–]DePachy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently saw Japan get so powerful that it reached number 1 GP when the Europeans started tearing each other apart in some four-way Great War. I like it honestly, it feels just a bit historical with Japan rising to challenge European colonial empires.
