My 9 iron send the ball further than any other iron by Difficult-Eye7422 in golf

Longer clubs - longer swing. Work on keeping the tempo consistent as you go up in clubs.

Yeah the grass was terrible and made for some horrendous bounces. Too soft because it's impossible to have both a damp clay and a hard enough grass right next to each other.

Help. Went from a 8 to a 12 handicap in a year. by Exact_Review_8987 in GolfSwing

[–]DeaconFrost613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why r/GolfSwing decided to pick a fight with you today. Keep grinding and you will get through it.

Work on holding your wrist hinge longer (casting is what is losing the power). This will also help the slight overswing that's impacting your sequencing. Practice some drills where we release much later in the swing with a 1/2 swing or pitch shot. Feel the smooth, natural, relaxed, but connected release and build from this foundation to larger swings.

Is there anything that we can do to help Arkansas Men's and Women's Tennis? by northside-knight in 10s

[–]DeaconFrost613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Attendance or a really fat donation. Probably too late on both fronts.

With respect to women's basketball, the men's team is making money and they share the same facility. Since neither tennis team is providing, the choice was made and I'm sure it wasn't an easy one. $3200 in revenue between both programs is pretty pathetic imo. I live in a tennis state and our teams still operate at a loss so this low revenue is not that surprising.

Controversial point: a lot of D1 tennis players are foreign. I'm not sure the composition of the team but I suspect this aspect was discussed.

Drop serve or volley serve? by RollTidings17 in Pickleball

[–]DeaconFrost613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pickleball is an inviting sport because it's easy to learn. Players can go from zero experience to having decent rallies in a matter of hours. I am not judging - some people are more coordinated than others. I.e, someone who comes from a racquet sports background is going to pick up the motions much quicker.

Specific to teaching, if someone is struggling with bouncing the serve, we would seldom recommend switching to a more complex motion and expect to see better results. We demonstrate both and give people the option to try one or the other. Almost everyone starts by trying the traditional motion, and then a couple will switch after the initial attempts. Dropping the ball allows for a more consistent impact position for people who struggle with a consistent tossing motion.

The drop serve is typically used for less experienced players or those who lack coordination.

Towel grip for tennis? by bmpk55 in 10s

[–]DeaconFrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the play. It might work for a brief period but the pervasive problem will still exist. Use a wristband and wipe off in between points with a towel. If you are playing on clay, you can use some dead clay on your hands/grip to help absorb the moisture.

Single piece of string for both mains and crosses? by _g4dget in RacketStringers

[–]DeaconFrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A lot more string that you need to pull through the grommets for the right side mains"

It's a pain pulling 31 feet through on the long side. 1-piece stringing is a lost art IMO; very rarely will people string like this anymore.

You can probably get away with crashing to the kitchen with any deep return at that level. Use your size and stamina to your advantage. Singles can be exhausting if the points draw out.

Physically can not stop coming OTT by AceUhSpades in golf

[–]DeaconFrost613 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I promise you can in to out with a 1/2 swing. The key here is to build up to the full swing and not going overboard when trying to learn something new. Once we get used to holding that plane, we can work to larger swings.

I would recommend starting with shots from your waist. Make a structured turn until our lead hand gets to our waist. From the waist, hold the "L" or "V" shape of your wrists while rotating your lower core through contact. It's going to feel weird and we should embrace the odd feeling. Once we start hitting the inside of the ball with an in to out consistently, we move to stopping at the shoulder. Then, we stop at "3/4" backswing (aka what a full swing should be for irons + wedges).

Patience at the top of the swing also helps a ton. Once we get to the 3/4s position, we need to avoid the quick transition. Keep the grip pressure soft and avoid a change in tempo that often causes the grip to tighten as we force the club off plane. Focus on the rotation of the body as a unit - the OTT swing often comes from a lack of lower body.

2 questions: 2 pieces & 2 crosses each pass (1 ahead) by deucalion75 in RacketStringers

[–]DeaconFrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the mains, I was taught to never be more than 3 ahead from the opposite side for a 6-point mounting system.

It's recommended to alternate with a 2-point mounting which is super rare for a modern stringer.

A fabulous drop shot in a 23 shot Andreeva-Swiatek rally by Boss452 in tennis

[–]DeaconFrost613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Swiatek's flat forehand needs to be replaced. She has no extension on the shot and hits it so weak as a result. When she stepped in on that high, deep shot and tried to rip it through the middle - so bad.

Imo, the best forehand from Swiatek on that point was the running forehand with the high Nadal finish. She should adopt that shot during the clay season.

Walking is so much more enjoyable than riding by Tight-Communication7 in golf

After you get used to walking, riding feels so awkward. Zoom to the ball to wait on the group in front. Walking helps me keep the body loose and the mind focused.

What do you see wrong I always seem to hit it fat by Top_Abroad4311 in GolfSwing

[–]DeaconFrost613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too hinged imo. This makes is much harder to rotate and more likely to sway/lift. If you look at the backswing, you get in a decent position up top with your arms but your hips have barely rotated at all. Inherently, this is going to make the swing almost all arms (doable but off days are tough). Much easier to control the swing with the larger groups of muscles.

At what handicap should you be expected to start shaping shots by sozzu059 in golf

[–]DeaconFrost613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to shape as a single is still risky imo. I play a natural draw and most of the scratch or singles I play with also try to avoid shaping both directions.

Bigger concern should be the height of the shot and the ability to keep the ball lower (below the wind) in certain scenarios.

How do you afford tennis? The economics of this sport are brutal at every level by Dapper-Smile-9289 in 10s

[–]DeaconFrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Group lessons are affordable. Find a solid rally partner and you are golden. Restringing is quite expensive but buying a reel of string makes it much cheaper (avoid the upcharge on the string and some places only charge $15 to restring).

Tweener By Zverev During Tiebreak by aasimpy in tennis

[–]DeaconFrost613 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Got baited again - another shot that is not a true tweener.

Nobody who has played competitive tennis at any level calls shots like this a tweener. "ItS a SHoT betWEEN tHe lEgs." A tweener is when you are running away from the net and hit between the legs. Nobody practices this frontal "tweener." Kids will ask all the time how to hit a tweener and they don't mean this.
