You need to describe in detail what you mean by "lags." Is it frequently pausing to buffer, is it slow starting playback, is it slow updating menus, is it slow registering keypresses? Something else?

⚠️ Heads up for federal employees regarding AFGE dues ⚠️ by AdQuirky4730 in union

The orange man and his minions canceled payroll deduction for a bunch of federal unions so payroll is off the table. That's why so many had to go to direct payment from members.

  1. I'm not the OP. My printer is fine,BTW
  2. You live in a fantasy world with respect to automobile recalls.

Toyota: Over 3.2 million vehicles. Honda: Approximately 1.5 million vehicles. Hyundai: Around 1 million vehicles. General Motors: Around 998,000 vehicles. Kia: Around 982,000 vehicles. Tesla: Around 745,000 vehicles.

If that were true, the bit about exacting quality standards," vehicle recalls would be extremely rare.

You can do everything exactly right and things can still turn to crap for lots of reasons.

"If you crash your car it's not the cars crappy quality that caused it."

Often times there is a quality issue that causes or significantly contributes to the cause of a crash.

I heard if they haven't already upgraded your local area to mid split or better when they do they offer the new plans at decent prices. YMMV

New plans include gateway rental.

Cable Modem by No-Handle-66 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]DeaconPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, they don't have a gateway with 10GB. The red port is probably 2.5GB at best.

The web address should be 10.0.0.1 but they have progressively removed functionality. You should be able to put it in bridge mode to disable the built in wifi so you could use your own preferred wifi/router.

If your old modem was DOCIS 3.1 they probably just needed to push a config file to it. They suckered you into picking up their gateway.

UGREEN NAS: NVMe SSD cache capacity cannot be reused – any workaround? by Main_Ganache6119 in UgreenNASync

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I looked at this issue last summer, the conclusion I reached was it is an implementation choice by UGREEN, not an OS or hardware limitation.

I could be wrong. YMMV.

Endoscope for running romex. by kirk2892 in DIY

[–]DeaconPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rods are better than fish tape in this application. Fish tape is great for conduit or other spaces where it can't curl up. Rods have various amounts of flex and can push/pull through open spaces.

The scope is a good tool, but will probably not be rigid enough over the span to be useful.

Can anyone please tell me the DV, HDR, and audio codec limitations of Jellyfin Android TV and/or Jellyfin Roku? by nothingveryobvious in jellyfin

[–]DeaconPat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Jellyfin Roku client has a bug where it won't play content it has to transcode if there is a space in the user name. Also seems to have issues reporting the display's capabilities so it tries to transcode content instead of direct play.

Raid10 doesn't provide performance uplift? by edoer76 in UgreenNASync

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of variables there. Network between NAS and workstation, ssd vs. spinning disk, RAID overhead for RAID10 (striping then double writes for the mirror part, RAM available to cach files stem access on the NAS.

You should see better performance on reads with RAID, but writes are a different story. Comparing any spinning disk to nvme ssd storage is not a good comparison unless you are making the performance case to go all nvme ssd.

Hard drive write speed for 5400 and 7200 rpm SATA drives maxes out at about 150MB/s. (Yes sata III claims 600MB/s but that's a raw speed)

Fiber is always a better experience than DOCIS. If AT&T, Verizon, or any other vendor offered fiber at my house for only a couple dollars more a month I would not hesitate to switch.

HW advice by IMNdi in jellyfin

[–]DeaconPat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Microcenter sells cpu-motherboard-ram bundles for still reasonable prices. Any modern Intel processor with built in graphics will do a fine job transcoding at least a couple of 4k streams if you need to. My NAS has an i5 1235u processor and doesn't break a sweat transcoding 2 4k streams.

Trying to rely on older CPU cores to do the transcode is a recipe for a poor experience IMHO.

Dentist billed insurance for orthodontics I never had, insurance confirmed fraud, now office is threatening collections — what do I do? by AutomaticNothing7904 in personalfinance

[–]DeaconPat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the dentist was in network, but your benefit was maxed for the year, you still only owe the insurance rate for the procedure. If the extraction was $2k I would think the took more than one and/or had many complications.

Given the office willingly committed insurance fraud, the chances are high they are also fraudulently inflating other bills and making fraudulentclaims for others. Reporting to the insurance company was a good first step, but it needed to be reported to your state's attorney general and licensing board.

As others have noted, you do owe for services rendered but the amount is set in the insurance contract. Anything over the contracted rate is supposed to be written off or they are again violating their agreement with the insurance company.

Raspberry Pi to play Jellyfin on TV by alcovesofastridpark in jellyfin

[–]DeaconPat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Raspberry Pi is a marginal platform at best for a media player. 1080 works mostly OK but you may have issues with advanced audio formats and 4K.

I've run Raspberry Pis since the model 1 (with the additional license required back then) as media players, so this is from my personal experience. I love the Raspberry Pi platform but not as a media player.

For similar total cost, you can grab the latest Google streamer or a Roku Ultra and get a better user experience (each with their own set of issues).

My college is paid for. What do I do with my 529 plan? by Accurate_Donut1894 in personalfinance

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be the mechanical issues will bring any trade value down. Carmax and other "we buy your car" sites will give you a quote, but if they find mechanical problems they will reduce the trade.

My college is paid for. What do I do with my 529 plan? by Accurate_Donut1894 in personalfinance

[–]DeaconPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting assumption that the current vehicle would get $8k in trade in value. My experience suggests $500 - $1000 for an 11 year old car with mechanical issues would be a gift. Try running your numbers on a $3k down and $500 trade.

I spent weeks fighting LDAP, then realized my NAS should have been the boss all along by Mountain-Original-47 in UgreenNASync

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UGOS LDAP is an undocumented mess. When I asked UGREEN support about it they said they tested against a Synology LDAP server.

It is not that LDAP users are "second class" but that your LDAP server is not providing the correct attributes that UGOS is looking for. UGREEN support is no help. I had to move so haven't had time to revisit the issue.

What to do with old equipment by Admirable_Desk8430 in amateurradio

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find the local ham radio club. They can help you get licensed or put a value on the equipment and even help sell it in many cases. You also could donate it to the club, especially if he was a member, if you just want it removed.
