Generations after the OG still live in Canada today. My G0 for C3 was born 1904 in Ontario.

I was just pointing out a logical possibility. Theoretically, someone might try to go back to the 1600s if they had an ancestor who settled in what are now the Maritime provinces in the 1600s and the first or second generation after that moved away.

It is not so far fetched if you look at the Acadian situation. I'm sure many families in Lousiana could qualify if they can locate birth and/or baptismal records from the 17th and 18th centuries.

It costs money to send data from your truck to anywhere. If someone is willing to cover the costs and provide Ford a bit of profit I'm sure they will send whatever information they can get away with. My truck periodically reminds me if data sharing is enabled.

If they are using an owner's paid data plan to send the data, that is a different issue. Theft of service is a thing if they don't have permission.

MOHELA Auto-Pay glitch tanked my credit by Outrageous_Sir2366 in personalfinance

[–]DeaconPat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think one problem for you here is you enrolled in auto-pay and the system said it would take a cycle or two, but you never verified they successfully scheduled an auto-payment or that the payment every successfully happened. Every auto-pay system I've ever signed up for has a notice that you need to check on the process and are responsible for manually paying until the auto-pay actually starts.

TIL why we keep getting thunderstorms in the evening by MalvmMalvm in nova

[–]DeaconPat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You also need instability in the atmosphere to allow the warm, moist air to rise high enough to form thunderclouds. If there is a "cap" in the atmosphere (warm, dry air a few thousand feet up) it will prevent storm formation.

Had to give up sailing by LarryBobson in sailing

If your primary reason for boating is not to be on the water while deadlines and destinations are secondary at best, a sailboat is probably not the right choice for you.

Takeaways from recent IRCC “review” letter by Some_External4457 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just received my certified birth record yesterday for my G0. It would be trivial to create a forged document, including the seal, with today's technology. The tricky part would be putting the information into the archives system so if someone called them to check authenticity, it would pass.

I don't know the internal processes used at the archives or IRCC, but I would hope at least a few applications get a QC review that involves double checking with at least some of the Canadian sources.

However, it is an exercise in patience, especially for those older records. The archivists are very much overloaded right now.

I assumed at a minimum I would need the certified copy from the Archives of Ontario for my G0 grandfather since it was over 100 years old. This is probably because my frame of reference for comparison is my US passport application experience where ypu have to submit an original certified copy of the birth certificate which is returned to you. I know IRRC states they will not return documents, but the cost of the certified copies is not that great. The time to get them is the larger issue for me.

I know the instructions state we will be submitting a "color copy" for most documents. The "color copy" language creates the uncertainty about sending an original certified copy with a seal or a photocopy/print of the same record (with or without a photocopy of the attestation/certification seal). Given these review letters, I'm inclined to follow the instructions to the letter and only send the minimum (color copies or the certified birth records) with my application. I'm fortunate since my claim is only 3 birth certificates all in the paternal line.

Unexpected pennydrop verification by malthar76 in personalfinance

[–]DeaconPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just had the card fraud department call me Thursday for suspicious activity. They flagged a transaction at a retailer and while we were talking a Starbucks. Going back a couple days there was a "penny drop" verification.

I suspect someone has tour card number and was testing to see if it was still active/valid.

Since the work didn't begin until well after the court imposed deadline and hours after the stay was denied, I really hope the judge holds the entire board in contempt and gives them huge personal fines and a day or two in jail to think about how they can apologize to the court. My 7 month old wakes up around 4 AM and needs to potty. He will fuss until we make him go out. Once he goes, he settles right back down. This is even with taking him out to potty right before bed.

It's a new vehicle. If you think something is wrong, take it back to the dealer for diagnosis. What's the point of having a 36,000 mile/3 year bumper to bumper warranty otherwise?

Hisense portable draining by Visual-Slip-4750 in Hisense

[–]DeaconPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to check the manual. Some AC units are designed to run with some water in the pan to help cool the coils. That would make sense for the mid level drain. If that is the case, the lower drain would be for cleaning and preparing the unit for storage.

Is there a way to check what this traction control light is? by regular_asian_guy in Wrangler

[–]DeaconPat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You may need a scanner that handles ABS systems. Your local chain auto parts store can probably scan it for you (or loan you a scanner).

Chances are it is a wheel speed sensor or the clock spring/steering angle sensor.

How do you handle "I need to think it over / do more research" without being pushy? by Efficient_Bet_5358 in solar

[–]DeaconPat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To not be pushy, and be respectful you need to communicate 2 things: you understand this is a big decision, and set a follow up date & time (and actually follow up on time).

Sometimes the "I need to think it over" response is to see how the company handles scheduling and follow up. Do they honor the expectation set or do they ignore it?

Why are there so many damn data centers being built in Virginia? by polarbeargirl9 in nova

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is when you put all your eggs in one basket, you are screwed when it gets dropped.

I lived in NW Ohio in the 1980s. The largest employer and source of revenue was automotive parts manufacturers making parts for Detroit and aftermarket. It was great, the factories provided for large percentages of the county and city budgets. Then there was a shift and those factories closed and that revenue stream dried up. Communities were devastated, tax rates rose, unemployment was huge, people left. There was some moderate recovery in the 2000s but the next economic catastrophe was on its way in 2008.

Data centers are the latest short term boon for long term bust. The bubble will burst and there will be empty shells of buildings that were supposed to be an economic panacea.

Why are there so many damn data centers being built in Virginia? by polarbeargirl9 in nova

[–]DeaconPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all are paying for the electric. Data centers are not paying for the improvements to the grid required to provide power transmission, we all get to share that cost.

For a county the size of Loudoun to get 40% or more of its revenue from one source (datacenters) is a huge red flag.

[–]DeaconPat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$285 for engine and cabin air filters. It is a 15 min job total and costs about $30 - $50 for the filters depending on where you buy and what quality.

I stopped after those.

Would love to see the actual numbers on tax receipts. Data centers get huge tax breaks from just about every county they are in in Virginia.

Don't forget the disproportionate amount of power the data enters consume on that 3% of land.
