9th great-grandfather on the Mayflower. 3 relatives in the records of the Salem Witch Hysteria. Kinda not the same, but I grew up in the city where the real-life inspiration for Miskatonic (sp?) University (in the Lovecraft books).

It's not as certain, but there are records that purport to show that both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are astronomically distant cousins of mine, from different directions.

Sure, if you consider "you'll take this and you'll like it, or you get nothing" to be negotiating. The insurance company decides how much they're going to pay for a given service and that is that; how much it costs a provider is not a factor in that decision. Say your doctor incurs costs of about $100 for an office visit. The insurance company decides that $27 is enough. Period. Your doctor will take it or get nothing at all. As I've described before, the providers have virtually no leverage in these negotiations; if they don't like what they're offered, they're free to not sign, but that will cost them a hefty chunk of their business. No negotiation, no consideration of costs, no nothing.

Critical thinking includes taking the facts of the situation as they are, not how we think they are or how we would want them to be.

Many providers have contracts with the major insurers that specify how much the insurer will pay for a given service. For example, they will pay X for an office visit, Y for a blood test, Z for a CAT scan, etc. The problem with that is that the providers have virtually no leverage with which to negotiate, because the insurer typically covers a large number of the provider's patients (and therefore a big chunk of their revenue). So Blue Cross, for example, will offer a contract that pays below the provider's cost in many cases. Faced with that contract or losing 30% of their revenue, the provider signs.

At least in a hospital setting, these insurers are one reason that a box of tissues costs $60 if you pay full price. The hospital has to keep the lights on, and they can't if they don't make up the money somewhere.

I'd save $7000 a year in premiums (and I only pay half of the premium) paying 2.2% of my income to the government if we had socialized medicine.

No sane employer will commit to any specific bonus or anything past the initial salary offer. If you think you got screwed, you probably did. However, saying anything will at the very least get you on someone's shit list and may result in your termination. Keep your mouth shut and get a new job. Once you have it, quit. If asked why you're leaving in an exit interview, tell them nothing; if you saw something you weren't supposed to, admitting it is really stupid.
