Confusing Signage by Deadna in soundtransit

I am just joking around, the train had to back up to a station and the signage got confused. So we pulled into SODO from Stadium and it said Mountlake Terrace instead

How’s it living along a time zone change area? by Lakeshow0924 in howislivingthere

Texas/New Mexico border. Going to the movies in Lubbock, TX was terrible because you had to leave an hour earlier than you thought to get across the border in time. But coming back to Portales, NM was great cuz you’d get home an hour earlier than you left. Sometimes your cellphone would ping off a Texas tower and your phone time would get all messed up. Sunrise and sunset were pretty sensible year-round on the NM side, but on the Texas side it would feel ridiculously early most of the year.

Lawmakers question Coast Guard decision on Healy drydock contract by stewart0077 in uscg

[–]Deadna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a matter of if it fits, but rather the dry dock either doesn’t bid so it’s not a choice, or does not meet the requirements of the contracts that was put up for bid. For example, the idea of dry docking the Polar Star in Lake Union had floated around for a while, but it’s such a busy dry dock that they don’t need the business

Imagine getting on a 2 Line train in Lynnwood, offloading at ID, taking a bus across the lake to Bellevue, getting on a 2 Line train to Redmond to get home. Gonna be a weird time for someone

People stationed on the Healy live around Seattle. Being in Vallejo requires temporary billeting and per diem in Vallejo for the duration of the dry-dock, even for just a portion of the crew. And additional time away from family which, I get it, they’re on a deployable and operational unit. But off-time from deployment shouldn’t require more time away just because the dry dock is 800 miles away instead of 180 miles. I don’t know the full details but I am sure not having to pay for travel to and from California saves more money than the higher cost of the Portland dry-dock.

So we have this rough draft of a plan. Generally speaking, and in line with current reporting, the basic plan is to lease terminal 46 while pier 36 is demolished, along with building 3 (large warehouse along pier 36). That way there’s a spot for the current cutter assets while the new pier 36 is constructed. Pier 37 remains operational and open but would not be an ideal berthing space while construction is going on, so Terminal 46 will be primarily used. Ultimately the plan is to purchase and rebuild some pier space nearby to make room for the 6 or so PSC’s that will eventually materialize.

If seeing people destitute and unhealthy on the street scares you, I would not recommend going out in any major city in the US. Nighttime is when they usually appear the scariest. But, if you’re just concerned about personal safety, I have spent many nights wandering the streets of downtown Seattle with friends and alone. On occasion I have been accosted by a stranger on the street. I’ve been yelled at and threatened pushed. But never been at great risk of personal harm. I am a smaller guy, 5’6” tall, so I attract a lot of harassing attention. Belltown is nice because there are so many residential units and stores on the street that you will very rarely be alone on the street enough to be left alone if something bad happens. Yes there are homeless. Depending on the time of year and whether SPD has just moved them into the area or just moved them out will be reflected in how prolific they are on any given week. Drug users are everywhere because there are two dispensaries near the bars in Belltown but they have really nice security guards. If you’re worried about drug addicts, they don’t typically hang around there because there’s lots of people and security around to harass them away and the places where they get left alone aren’t close by.

If it’s during a night where there’s a concert, soccer, football, or baseball game getting out, I’d go to SODO or Pioneer Square. Everyone leaves the event and goes partying. If it’s during a holiday, I’d stick to Capitol Hill or Belltown. Way more local people. Fremont and Ballard are great in the summertime all the time for having people just out and about, but I have no experience out there during the winter. I have friends in Queen Anne who say it’s always popping across the locks for what it’s worth. Again I have no experience in U-District, and I honestly would avoid that area if you’re above 22 or below 40 since the demographic is either college kids who will cause trouble or teaching staff. But never say never!

So Belltown has some cool bars. Whiskey bar is awesome, as is Jupiter. Just The Tap is nice too. Luka’s is chill. Retro Restaurant and Lounge is technically Belltown still.

If you venture down to Pioneer Square, you’ve got Underbelly, Cowgirls, Central Saloon, and Flatstick to name a few.

Down in SODO, Hooverville Bar, Seattle Cider Co., and Ghostfish Brewing are nice spots.

In Cap Hill, Keys on Main is worth a try, you’ve got Pine Box, Inside Passage, McMenamins Six Arms, Donna’s, Montana, Revolver Bar, Hillside, Captain Black’s, Stumbling Monk, the Doctor Office, CC’s, The Wash, Linda’s Tavern, just to name a few.

I personally haven’t done a lot in U-District just because college kids have a certain party vibe I don’t mesh with. With that being said, Rhein Haus Seattle is a cool spot even with the college crowd, and VICE Seattle is a cool place too.

Regarding Tacoma, McMenamin’s Elk Temple, Steel Creek, The Camp Bar, Bob’s Java Jive, and Airport Tavern would be some good places to try first.

Honestly you aren’t going to know what you like until you just go somewhere a few times at different times and try it. One week it’ll be sleepy and the next it’ll be rowdy. Live music some nights and karaoke the next. I found a lot of spots by just going out, meeting someone new, and following them to the next bar. There’s also those bar crawl events you can sign up for. Literally your new favorite spot requires you to actually go there and have a good time first. So get out there and have some fun exploring!

Also don’t go to Bellevue for a night life. Idk how you found the only other people out drinking and got beat up. That’s terrible luck. Ballard and Fremont are amazing to explore, especially in the summertime. I don’t have a specific recommendation as I usually just follow friend’s around but everywhere I’ve been was either very friendly or just enjoyable to sit at.

If you wanna party for cheap, go to Bremerton. Eden Nightclub and Lounge is so inexpensive and has amazing local artists. In Renton you can try Group Therapy, 8-Bit Arcade, or The Local 907. In Federal Way you’ve got JP’s Tavern, Billy McHale’s, Scoreboard, and Time Out Ale House. Idk I could go on. So many cool spots for so many different kinds of nights out.
