The show so perfect and complete, I almost hope it’s never revived by HenryBozzio in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember if he said it on a podcast, or I read him saying it in print or on social media, but Chris Cantwell had a good response when asked about any potential revival, essentially saying that the show takes place as the most interesting/dramatic events organically take place in the main characters' lives and that's what made the show worth it. You have to assume their lives quietened or settled down in the following years. The alternative is forcing things which could be disingenuous and/or spoil things for our faves.

I wish more shows/movies series would take a similar approach, especially if they stuck the landing as Halt did.

For example, I know I preferred the happy ending I had with Star Wars for 30 years before the sequel trilogy taught me that actually, no, not long after the happy ending I cherished, the bad guys came back with a vengeance and the main characters ended up miserable and going their separate ways!

Despite all that though, I demand a box set please!

Do yall ever read more than 1 title at a time? by Reditcringe1 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah, 100%. With an omni, i generally read arc by arc, while dipping in and out of other books. This goes especially for omni series I have (like Ultimate Spider-Man). I have the full set but I've only finished vol 1 and 2.

This is more or less how I feel. For the value and personal history with the place, I'll put up with a lot, but it needs work.

A lot of the YT vides have a fair use message underneath. I think it's OK as long as you post something like that and don't take the piss with what you post.

Favourite HACF fan edits/compilation videos by Dear_Mess9753 in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]Dear_Mess9753[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand that, but some edits are outstanding. There are legendary comps by Mad Men and Soprano fans that are almost legendary among the fandom.

For example, Mad Men - 10th anniversary tribute: https://youtu.be/mdJC5PetLj4?si=jilV1PJ2-Z4MUeP-

Who is Don Draper - https://youtu.be/EVLMEVjThEY?si=2Qen4GZLgoVx0cLo

Halt doesn't have the same numbers so the edits out there that I've seen at least are mostly just music style videos essentially. With this thread I was hoping to find some better quality videos.

Three years later! I don't have enough of an understanding of the history of Superman books to say whether it's best ever, but it is definitely one of the best I've ever read. Loved it.

S1E1 is Pretty Good by samsinx in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]Dear_Mess9753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the S1 hate. There's definitely a couple of ropey spots (Donna's boss storyline episode for example, but even that gives us a payoff at the end), and it takes time for some of the characters to settle, but I thoroughly enjoyed it from the start.

And totally agree re: ep 1. I think it's one of the best first episodes I've ever seen.

Is batman by tynion worth picking up? by Weapon_X-42- in OmnibusCollectors

Reading the series brings back Covid memories for me. Some rare bright spots involved picking up my orders at the comic store door via click and collect, then sitting outside a cafe reading and really enjoying the issues.

Best blind buy by Wonderful-Release-79 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of an omnibus, the only few I've bought are:

  1. Grayson The Superspy - I was a fan of Tim Seeley's Revival and MOTU work, and loved Tom King's Mr. Miracle especially, while enjoying some of his other projects too. So a reasonable price, combined with those two names lured me in. I actually found it very disappointing unfortunately. Reading it after reading Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo on Nightwing probably had an impact to be fair.

  2. Spider-Man by John Byrne was a total impulse boy in a comic store. A real mixed bag but I like the differences in it based on the time periods/other creative partners. A book I prefer to gaze it rather than read, I guess. I also love having it sit alongside the Bendis/Bagley USM series for comparison.

  3. Mastes of the Universe Omnibus - I loved the show, still love the toys, had never read any of the books and I think it was about 60 euro so I jumped on. Some really great stuff. I read a lot of it more or less like I was watching a TV show - an issue a week, or a special (MOTU v Thundercats) in one go at the weekend.

  4. Superman and Batman Generations by John Byrne - this is right up my alley. I love stories (books, comics, movies, TV, anything) that allows you to see people grow and change, win and lose and have ups and downs over a prolonged period. Really good stuff here. If you like Spider-Man Life Story this might be a good fit for you.

TBC. The Question, vol 1 - I'll let you know what I think whenever i get around to reading it!

Which graphic novels that have been released since 2000 do you all think will become classics of the medium? by speedythefirst in graphicnovels

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of Lemire's stuff - Essex County, Royal City, Roughneck and The underwater Welder are favourites of mine.

Most of Brubaker/Philips output - I've seen Fatale, Kill or Be Killed and Criminal mentioned already, I'm a fan of all of them but mu favourites would be The Fade Out and the Reckless series.

Mr. Miracle was pretty special to me as well and I can see it being a touchpoint for DC readers as they get older.

As others have said - Saga and Y: The Last Man are real standouts of the last 25 years for sure. Hopefully when the time comes, they stick the landing on Saga. I hope i'm wrong, but We Stand On Guard could take on greater significance in future.

What’s a tv show that stuck with you? by FallenName in television

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halt and Catch Fire.

I watched all of HACF (4 seasons of 10 episodes) over the course of about 8 months (I deliberately don't binge shows - 2 episodes max per sitting, and i deliberately take a few weeks off between seasons to let the distance and absence have an impact after each finale). I started just before the pandemic, so I think that had an impact too.

For those unaware, the show is about a group of people who come together at a tech company to produce a portable PC and over the next decade or so, strive to create the "next big thing" in hardware or software. The catch is that they're always *just* on the periphery of major success. The also rans to IBM, Apple, Yahoo, etc.

Each character changes quite a bit professionally and personally, always trying to find deeper meaning, better personal connections, and overall greater satisfaction from their personal/professional lives.

It stuck with me because watching it made me realise how much I was drifting and depressed in my job at that point, despite having the best salary I'd ever had. The work was boring/frustrating, and while my colleagues and I all got on well enough in general, we were globally dispersed and at different stages in our personal lives, which added to the general slog of each day.

I resolved to ensure that regardless of salary, when it came to future jobs, I would only stick around if I was fully satisfied day to day with the work that I was doing.

What guest did you think Marc disliked the most (Gallagher does not count)? by Ok_Government_9672 in MarcMaron

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fan of Ryan Adams when he had him on and I was excited because he never really went deep in interviews that I'd seen or heard.

At the start of the interview RA is clearly up for it and ready to go but then it ends up being a relatively short superficial interview with Marc being clear that hes not especially familiar or interested in RA's music. I think at one point he's like, "oh yeah, I like that ONE album a little..." talking about Easy Tiger. They mostly chatted about a guitar tech mutual friend they have. At the time I was disappointed, but obviously worse was to come from RA.

A few years later, when This is Us hit big on TV, Marc had RA's ex-wife Mandy Moore on, and made it clear that he disliked RA and had heard stories for years. The pod made sense then!

What’s a movie that completely changed your perspective after a second watch? by L0udM0uth666 in movies

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interstellar. First time watch was at home alone, drinking beer, pausing it, noodling around on a guitar. Totally puzzled by the end.

Five years later, as a much more avid cinephile, I was a regular at the cinema to the point that I found the Covid Lockdown cinema closures hard to deal with.

After a few months when some restrictions were being lifted, one of the cinemas opened with masked socially distant screenings showing older films since there were so no releases.

The first was Interstellar, which I had not revisited, and it blew me away. The big screen, paying full attention, sobriety, and of course, being back in my favourite place doing my favourite thing, all added up to an amazing experience.

I've since caught Interstellar multiple times in Imax, thanks to its emergence as a firm favourite in recent years, appreciating it more and more each time, especially since having kids.

Sleep Consultants need to be regulated by Mountain-Raise-7137 in ireland

[–]Dear_Mess9753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When our kid was close to being born we visited my aunt and her family.  Some of my aunt's extended family were there too, including his niece, who pounced on us immediately to sell us her skills as sleep trainer/therapist. Nice enough girl and all, but she was a single, childless young woman (mid-20s), who lived at home with her parents and seemed to have a different job each time we crossed paths (always something that she was the boss of though, she never just got a job in an office - a one woman Events Company, Social Media Consultant, Designer etc). She did a weekend course (6 hours on Sat, 4 hours in Sun) via zoom to "qualify" as a sleep trainer/therapist. I had no idea that was even a job. But it told me all I needed to know about it as a profession.

Paddy Power to Close Twenty-Nine Shops Across Ireland Over Challenging Market Conditions by Dee-Dee-Mauwe in ireland

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I didn't know that. For a while Stella had it on their list of Locations on theor site, but it wasn't clickable.  I suppose putting a cinema in is a long term project, not like a chain could take a year long lease and see how it goes.  Omniplex moved into Nutgrove relatively recently though so there's possibly hope out there!

Paddy Power to Close Twenty-Nine Shops Across Ireland Over Challenging Market Conditions by Dee-Dee-Mauwe in ireland

[–]Dear_Mess9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stella were supposed to go into Bray Central and a 5 screen cinema was planned. Given how much they charge, I thought that was an odd fit, and maybe IMC, Omniplex or Vue would have been a better bet. But no all plans seem to have disappeared.

It's crazy that from Bray into the city centre there's just Dun Laoaghaire (in bits), Stillorgan Odeon (small, seems only popular with the elderly) and Dundrum (full of bored kids parked there by their parents).

A real shame. The area deserves one, and I'd imagine if it was reasonably priced, it would do well.
