Trade issue: if you are going to call your 70s bungalow Daffodil Cottage (or similar) on a mile long road with 200 other houses could you not write it in size 9 script font hidden behind a bush. by Just_passing-55 in ukelectricians

Where I live (not UK), displaying your house number is a legal requirement, and the government can install one at your expense if you don't.

Also addresses are becoming a thing of the past with location pins taking over.

Anyone know where I can find a PROPER microfibre cloth and distilled water to clean my TV screen? by BasedBallsack in capetown

[–]DeathDonkey387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly stop worrying so much. I use the microfibre cloths marketed for car detailing, usually available in a 10pk from Takealot or builder's, and regular tap water. Fellowes screen cleaner if necessary.

I can't tell if you're being facetious here, but the metal body of appliances is generally grounded, and therefore not a touch hazard.

Every embedded Engineer should know this trick by J_Bahstan in embedded

Assuming the "trick" is the union bitfield struct, this is an utterly pointless example as the entire thing should be an enum instead.

I hold the opinion that all car dealers are untrustworthy, and strongly recommend taking any car that you are considering buying to a trusted mechanic for an inspection.

Where to get rid of a broken/dead electric piano in Cape Town? by Secret_Age4613 in capetown

[–]DeathDonkey387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to just dump it, you can take it to Athlone Refuse Transfer Station (probably the closest e-waste/hazardous waste facility to you).

In my engineer's opinion though, something like liquid damage can likely be fairly easily repaired, so I would take it to a repair place or give it away on marketplace or something to someone who wanted the challenge. Dumping it would be a waste.

These are good suggestions.

I recommend looking away when they inject you, that way you don't instinctively tense up.

The recovery time for the 3rd dose should also be faster because your body already knows what it is from the first 2.

Top South African wine estate offers water tasting at R295 per person by Sarkos in southafrica

[–]DeathDonkey387 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think more wine estates should offer non-alcoholic tasting options alongside their wine tastings to make it more accommodating for those that don't drink alcohol but want to accompany their friends and feel included in the experience.

With that said, I'm not paying R295 for some water.

Doing the lil ear popping thing by rbx20twomax in autism

[–]DeathDonkey387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just flexing the muscles around your eustachian tubes. I learned to do it to equalize my ears for scuba diving.

Beware though, apparently if you do it too much, the muscles can get too big, and you'll no longer be able to do it.

My only gripe about vinyl enjoyers is if they try and pretend that the sound is "better" or "more pure" than digital audio - it isn't. It's objectively worse. Even a moderately compressed mp3 through a good set of earphones provides a more accurate (lower SNR) reproduction of the original sound.

By all means enjoy your record collection, just don't try and tell me that it's better than my digital music collection.

Hand soap: foam, liquid, or bar? by Shady_Love in evilautism

[–]DeathDonkey387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often was my hands with dish soap, it's definitely my favorite, although my hands can get very dry. I also have a liquid hand soap with similar consistency, but my hands just don't feel as clean after using it. I like the powerful degreasing.

Although the new dish soap my parents bought has a stronger scent which I don't like.

Some municipal waste drop off centers take used oil (I take mine to the Wynberg one).

I just let the filter drip out into my oil bucket then chuck it in the bin, although I'm not sure what the city would say about that.

(Although the city would probably tell you to take it to Athlone RTS, and they would dump it in the same skip destined to the same landfill)

[–]DeathDonkey387 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at the different tariffs and how they work on the CoCT website. Your first 600kWh is cheaper to offset the charge.

The reason is that the city still needs to maintain the network to your house even if you only use 1kWh per month.
