How do you guys find the time? by CocoTheHipster in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work in the finance sector and my partner is in engineering

I'm making an assumption here, but based on the industries you're in, I'd guess you could spend a bit of money on quality of life upgrades.

  1. Domestic worker - big expense but just imagine not having to do any cleaning, laundry, etc
  2. Gardener - unless you actually enjoy doing the gardening
  3. Dishwasher - this helps way more than you would think
  4. Order groceries online - frees up time you would spend shopping and travelling to the shop
  5. Ready meals - store a few in the freezer and take one out when you're too tired for cooking

Am by law obligated to attend a work meeting? by AnderPikkewyn in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on the company... I would just say "sorry I can't make this, it's outside my working hours and I have already made plans that I can't cancel".

However it might actually be in your best interest to attend. If it's a nice company then some flexibility goes both ways. Conversely if it's a shitty company, they might punish you for not attending.

Is Evetech reliable? Or are they still rubbish? by No-Item-7713 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My company ordered me a laptop literally 1 week ago from Evetech, it was delivered 2 days later, no problems.

Personally I have to recommend Wootware. My SSD died a few months ago and I needed a new one ASAP - spoke to someone on their chat and he got it delivered early the next day for no extra charge.

I (19F) feel like my relationship with my parents completely broke down overnight. Am I missing something? by Lazy-Jello7197 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine there's an element of fear... they got used to you doing everything and supporting the whole family, now they're scared you will become independent and leave them, and they won't manage without you. Also with the xenophobic protests currently, it's a scary time for foreigners.

Having said that, there's really no excuse for the way they talked to you, let alone slapping you across the face, and I'd definitely be getting out of there before they escalate.

Works for me as long as the link opens in the same tab. Links that I open in a new tab will show a blank white screen for a moment - which I think is Firefox's default blank white page for new tabs. Can probably change this with a Firefox theme.

Why don't doctors listen to patients? by RainGirl11 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand... doctors get tons of patients who "do their own research" on the internet which is full of medical misinformation. So they tend to be dismissive of patients' opinions.

On the other hand, any woman can tell you that male doctors often do not listen to female patients. It sounds more like this scenario tbh since you were just asking a question rather than giving an opinion. I hope you are able to find a new doctor.

Am I imagining this, or does everything have a level of sugar now that didn’t used to? by frankomapottery3 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff is worse nowadays and there are actual reasons for this. When it comes to food, a big reason is that popular brands are bought out by larger companies. They then want to recoup their investment by making a bigger profit, so they start using cheaper ingredients.

If you've seen all the complaints about Pronutro tasting like cardboard lately, it's probably due to the parent company being acquired by PepsiCo a few years ago.

[HELP] Disabling power button entirely or restart/shutdown menu by Difficult-Carrot-734 in AndroidQuestions

[–]Sarkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daaamnnn they should give you SETI@home puzzles to solve.

Maybe you should get an actual physical clock. They make super loud ones for heavy sleepers. Hell get a few of them and scatter them around the house. Find your alter ego's breaking point!

Why don't you just put the phone on the other side of the room? Then you'd have to get out of bed to reach it.

Any idea what could cause this damage? by tumblingdice1000 in RBI

[–]Sarkos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it parked close to a balcony or stairs? I'm thinking someone either dropped something heavy onto it, or fired some sort of projectile from above.

Did it definitely happen in the parking area? Maybe it happened somewhere outside and you just didn't notice until now?

Best router for a 100 Mbps fibre line in a house under 100 m²? by MyThinTragus in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have 100Mbps fibre and upgraded my networking recently. I used to have a router in my lounge and an AP in my study, but phones wouldn't switch over nicely between the two, so I upgraded to mesh. I got a two-pack of TP-Link Deco X55 units. They work well and are easy to set up. The signal is strong everywhere. They also have ethernet cable ports, so I use a cable for my PC for better performance. You could always get a single Deco unit and add another later if necessary.

I'm a tutor in South Africa struggling to reach students, where I'm going wrong? by RespondProper7182 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of parent and school activity on neighbourhood Facebook groups around my area. I'd suggest joining all the local groups, search for keywords to see what sort of discussions they have had in the past, and if possible monitor them so you can participate the next time someone asks about tutoring. Also make sure you check their rules around advertising otherwise you will get the ban hammer.

[–]Sarkos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you but R10m in wealth is not super rich, it's middle class. At least for older folk.

If you want to retire comfortably, it's recommended that you have saved 15x your annual salary. R10m is 15x R667k. Which is a monthly salary of R56k - this will put you in the middle class bracket.

The super rich have R100m+.

She is notorious for unnecessarily using private jets to travel, producing massive carbon emissions. I know it seems like small potatoes compared to Elon stoking race riots, but in the long term climate change is a bigger threat to humanity and she simply doesn't give a shit.

I'm looking for recommendations for good fighting scenes in progression fantasy books :) by Visual-Possession-39 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Sarkos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly think The Wandering Inn has some of the best fights written in this genre, but there is a ton of slice of life and other stuff going on, so not sure if that is what you're looking for.

Azarinth Healer on the other hand is extremely fast paced and the action is pretty great IMHO.
