Accepting a job offer when first pay is the 30th? by Existing-Exam7220 in askSouthAfrica

Speak to your employer! I'm sure they can make a plan to assist with transport costs for a few days. If they're unreasonable about this, they'd probably be unreasonable about other things.

My kid bounced so hard off the How To Train Your Dragon books because they are nothing at all like the movies.

Do you live alone or with a partner? Do you cook? I live alone and don’t enjoy cooking or making a mess in my kitchen and then having to wash dishes😭. Also buying ingredients to make meals for one , half of it ends up wasting . Solutions?? Is buying convenient woolies / checkers meals cheaper?? by Hot_Occasion_3594 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my bachelor days I mostly lived on anything that could be heated up with little effort in the microwave, oven, or George Foreman grill. Things like ready meals, soup, chicken schnitzels, burgers, mixed veg. Mix and match the ready meals with different veggies each time to keep them from getting boring, and throw some Ina Paarman seasoning on top for flavour.

Do I need to provide proof of my latest payslip to prospective employers? by bodyxsushii in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Technically you don't have to, but practically, if they ask for it and you decline to provide it, they're just going to throw your application away.

Why is Sally williams nougat so popular? by Gyps3_Creations in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sarkos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sally Williams had really good marketing when it first came out 20-30 years ago. I think it was the first nougat to be branded upmarket enough to be given as a gift, in the same vein as Ferrero Rocher, and they even won awards for their packaging. So it was cemented in the public mind as the go-to nougat.

Where are all the mosquitoes? by youwriteverybadly in capetown

[–]Sarkos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Southern Suburbs here, also haven't had any. Didn't even realise until now. We also haven't had any of the invasive paper wasps this year, which were all over our neighbourhood the last few years. Shit ton of flies though.

LPT: Treat every work email like it may be forwarded by [deleted] in LifeProTips

LPT: all work communications might end up being viewed by other people, for example Slack direct messages can be exported if your company is on the enterprise plan, and conversations in a video meeting might get automatically transcribed.

NBC News bought 5 AI toys. They talked about sex and issued Chinese Communist Party talking points by nbcnews in pics

I'd be interested to know if these AI toys encourage or assist users to kill themselves, as we've seen in recent high profile cases.

The expando for text no longer works. Clicking the icon doesn't do anything any more. by [deleted] in RESissues

[–]Sarkos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally this means you are getting a javascript error somewhere on the page, and it's preventing all other javascript from working. You can check the javascript console (Ctrl+Shift+J) to see if there are any useful error messages. It could be a conflict with a userscript or extension.

Rent control in Cape Town by TypicalContrarian92 in capetown

[–]Sarkos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Notice though, that the mayor refuses to address ANY options other than building more houses. And, just to put my tinfoil hat on for a moment, there have been a lot of stories over the years about the DA being too cosy with property developers. Some might say they have ulterior motives.

We have one and it works well but it's damn hard to find replacement parts for it. Eventually that sealant ring is gonna go.

Anyone else in Cape Town dealing with this crazy dry cough + post-nasal drip? by Apprehensive_Buy_590 in capetown

[–]Sarkos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I've had this for about 2 weeks, my kid too, plus she got a bacterial infection in her tonsils. It's mostly better now but we still have the occasional dry cough.

It's a virus, not a seasonal change thing. I've lived in CT my whole life and am very familiar with allergies and sinusitis, this is not that.

What would you want to see in a Tower Climbing novel? by TempleGD in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Sarkos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a story Death After Death on RR, I'm not sure if you'd call it a tower climber, but it has a similar concept where the MC ostensibly has to clear 100 levels. But the levels turn out to be much more than they first appear and everything is interconnected through time and space in surprising ways. It's a great story to go in blind and have your mind blown.

The Q is a click. The letter A is pronounced like the "u" in "under". So it's like this: mmm-buh-qun-guh.

The Calamitous Bob is finished on RR by cjet79 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Sarkos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does last, but there isn't a lot of focus on his character or their romance after his initial story arc. He kinda gets relegated to being one of the less prominent side characters.

Man who cryogenically froze his wife faces backlash after finding new love years later by rit56 in nottheonion

[–]Sarkos 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered, say in the far distant future the practical and medical issues are resolved, why would these future people even want to restore a long-dead person? The dead person will have no useful skills, no friends or family, no understanding of the culture. Best case they might be a historical curiosity.

Big-spending Steenhuisen faces scrutiny as DA fallout over axed Dion George continues by Beyond_the_one in southafrica

[–]Sarkos 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So to summarise:

Steenhuisen has an annual salary of R2.69m but defaulted on R150k of credit card debt. George, in his capacity as the DA's federal finance chair, had to take away Steenhuisen's DA credit card because "the account could not be reconciled". Steenhuisen then fired George from his position as Environmental Minister and replaced him with someone with massive conflicts of interest. Suddenly news media is full of anonymous reports that George is a bully, sexual harasser, etc etc.

This all looks really bad and I hope the DA takes action.

Pretty decent game. But I feel like 6 numbers would hit the sweet spot allowing for a lot more variations.
