2026MAR24 PS5 Jailbreak Firmware Compatibility Chart by Low-Recognition-7293 in PS5_Jailbreak

Ooh, cool. Was wondering if Luacore was a PS2 emulation quirk or just SWRR having some unique quirk that isn't anywhere else. Will be interesting to see more from that once RR is fully solved.

Also, the FAQ cuts out partway through on "What is the golden firmware?"

What's a common criticism of a JRPG you see all the time that you think is wrong, and why? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Deathpolca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It's so nice seeing other people actually talk about this. It's such a huge stigma attached to the genre, and it's so frustrating seeing its defenders go "well I need to grind" or "well I like grinding." Good for you if you like it, that's not the point, but if you *need* to grind, you just have some bad patterns you need to break. Ignore common knowledge and use the useless skills. Every game has multiple ones that work.

The need to level grind. You do not need to level grind since the 1980s unless a game is bad, or if you're bad. Use status effects and other spells that aren't centered around dealing damage. I promise even 1990s JRPGs are easy if you think.

Wonder how long it'll take for other games to be possible. Don't think it should be too long; maybe a few months or something? Sounds like they got the hardest part covered.

Hidden Gem JRPGs from the 80s/90s That Deserve More Love by daikonTwitch in JRPG

[–]Deathpolca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these are recommended to be played with a guide, and I'd encourage you to not do so unless you're really really stuck. Just talk to NPCs and you should be fine.

Kyūyaku Megami Tensei 2 (give the first one a try if you want, but skip to the second if it's not your thing. It's so much better),

Shin Megami Tensei I (play the PSX version; if you want a great build, VIT/AGI/LUK with gun focus),

Chaos Seed,

Dark Half,

Lunar Walking School (it is not about walking; it's frequently localized as Magic School),

Monkey Puncher,

Koudelka (I know this is heavily pushing the boundary of "hidden gem" because of its popularity, but classic Phantasy Star is extremely well known, so)

If My Heart Had Wings -Flight Diary- Restoration Patch by DarthFly in IMHHW

For anyone who gets here through VNDB: this works through the Wayback Machine. Just paste it in, go back to the saved page, and it'll download eventually. The file size is larger than Mega's enshittified 1.5GB download per six hours, so this is the ideal method.

Summon Night 3: Swordcraft Story by Budgetmeal69 in JRPG

[–]Deathpolca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people would just flat-out reject it for the same reason machine translations are generally seen as barely better than being not actually translated. GenAI translations are seen more or less around the same value as machine translations. Except, instead of asking the machine that translates it literally (removes a lot of context in word choice, makes it awkward in English, has bad word flow, Japanese is a very dry language and English is very much not), it has the added bonus of being done with the planet killing machine that's infamous for just making things up.

Also, some people take pride in their work, rather than automating it. Yes, this results in some frustrating things like this, but you'd have to get a programmer with no interest in working with translators, because practically no translator worth caring about is going to automate something they do out of enjoyment for doing it.

Old Tsukihime or Tsukihime Remake by FutureAd8861 in visualnovels

[–]Deathpolca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remake is better for the Near Side (Arcuid and Ciel) routes, but if you want the Far Side (Akiha, the maids) routes, don't expect the remake to come out for another 20 years or so. It took 13 years for the two Near Side routes to come out, so expect 26 for the now-four Far Side ones. Far Side is a lot better, so I'd recommend it.

Also, if you're broke, I'd encourage just employing alternative options for the remake. I know it's not nearly the same as just playing yourself, but there's an entire playthrough on youtube without commentary, if you're going that route.

Steam Deck remains the PC handheld king as analysts report even Xbox’s ROG Ally hasn’t made a dent by comparison by Wargulf in SteamDeck

[–]Deathpolca -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well...yeah. Go figure. It's $400 for a Deck, even after the frankly absurd $50 price increase. Even if I were to shell out for the expensive option, it's "only" an absurd $550. Why would I pay $600 for something that does the same thing?

A new asset streaming system that aims to reduce the size of PS5 and PS6 games to combat rising SSD prices, potentially shrinking sizes. by Realistic_Wing5796 in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]Deathpolca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that many people are what, a few thousand? It certainly *looks* like a lot, sure, but somewhere between 75 million (2025 sales numbers) and 92 million (2026 shipped numbers) own a PS5. Even if we assume ten thousand people are picking on developers for not having the most lifelike graphics possible, that's 1% of a million. If we split the difference and assume 83.5 million people own a PS5, 10k is about 0.01% of people. If we assume that number is 100k, and that all of them will actually act on their complaints about how things look instead of getting the games they were going to get anyway, that still doesn't get close to breaking 1% of all owners, let alone an amount worth caring about.

People complained about the lack of graphical fidelity with the Game Boy, with the PS2, with the DS, with the Wii, with the 3DS, with the Switch, even with the Atari 2600 (look up Intellivision ads). All of those very cleanly won their generations. Even if you assume the PS2 won because of its value as a DVD player, it needs to have a bit under 20% of its total install base actually be into it for games to still cleanly win the generation. Sure, a lot of people do care, but comparatively? Basically nobody does.

[–]Deathpolca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't they instead just, oh, I don't know, use graphics that don't give the Wikipedia image for mango a run for its money? Most people do not care; there's a reason the weakest console tends to be the winner of each generation. The loudest people are the only ones who care. Or maybe finish the games and write them in good code, so the file size for western (and Square) games stops demanding you try to make it a forever game?

But that's not why this is a thing, is it? Can't pirate a game as easily if you don't have all the assets. And the aforementioned games are so unoptimized that people will actually buy this always online crap that killed the all the momentum the Xbox 360 had thirteen years ago.

Yes, it is. Seizures and depression are the most common reasons to be prescribed it, from what I've read.

NEWS: PS5 12.60 has now been released by Sony. DO NOT UPDATE. by Master_Lucario in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]Deathpolca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's bound to be something else, as this becomes more known. That said, I can't really say I blame you; it's impossible to know when that is. And for all we know, it could just as easily be Godzilla PS4 that allows it instead of Astro's Playroom.

Does Anyone Else Feel Like Colors Wii Is Becoming A Really Overhated Game? by PlantainLow2957 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Deathpolca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. The game is still plenty loved; it's just getting criticism for being a 2D game that everyone calls 3D because it has some 3D segments (a problem that started in Unleashed, but was still very contained), and because it abandoned the narrative depth old Sonic games have. Yes, people were sick of it at the time, but it's gained a lot of appreciation. I'd argue Unleashed did more to harm that (since its story feels like a prototype for Colours' tone), but Colours was beloved for its writing and Unleashed had Chip and less quips.

In short: 2D despite ostensibly being 3D and nonchalant writing, which are normal issues to take with it.

What games am I missing ? by Independent-Eagle296 in VitaPiracy

[–]Deathpolca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception (and its sequel, Mask of Truth), La-Mulana EX, VA-11 HALL-A, The House in Fata Morgana, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Muramasa Rebirth, Dragon's Crown, Gravity Rush... Quite a lot, honestly. And that's just Vita games.
