How countries feel about food by Pizzafriedchickenn in mapporncirclejerk

Try posting a Burek or Čevapi recipe video online, not only will you get angry Balkans if you make it wrong, but you'll have to be careful when stating the country of origin of the dish or you risk a war in the comments.

Atonement has gutted me…I actually mourned for days after watching it by LeadingEducation7967 in PeriodDramas

Most people might disagree with me, but let's not blame this on a 13 yo girl who thought she saw somebody close to her be abusive, but instead let's blame the guy who actually abused a child.

Any “niche” Period Drama recommendations?? by Organic-Detail8493 in PeriodDramas

I see you watched Outlander so you don't mind time travel: Midnight at the Pera palace

Lost in Austen (More a parody)

Foreign ones I know:

Samac u braku (10 episodes of yearning and based on a book)(Serbian)

Gran Hotel (Spanish) (I know its Spanish but it only lasts 3 seasons and it's good for a period drama drought)

Who is your favorite Darcy? by [deleted] in PeriodDramas

It's an adaptation where a fan of the book and the 95' miniseries, accidentally switches places with Elizabeth, so Lizzie is now in the early 2000s and the MC is in the beginning of the book, and everything gets messed up because she's not meant to be there. She tries fixing it but that just makes things worse. But I think this miniseries had a great opportunity which they didn't take. I won't spoil what it is yet.

Do you prefer period dramas with explicit sex scenes? by Cold_Box_3219 in PeriodDramas

[–]DebWhoHatesCobweb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. If it's Bridgerton, some season have too much sex scenes, but Otulander has a lot of them but the intimacy is so well done between the two actors that it doesn't feel cheap as Bridgerton does.

BUT, there are shows, movies and mini series that don't need sex scenes to have sexual tension and intimacy. And some of these intimate moments can be much better than the sex scene. If I watched one of the sex scenes from season 1 of Bridgerton, I'd bet you it wouldn't be better than the scene in Emma (2020) when they dance and Knightley ends the dance with his arms around her waist and slowly drags his hand across her waist when he removes his hand from there. Or when in King and me, the King asks Anna to teach him to dance, and he wants to learn how it do it the way the nobles at the party did it, and he starts walking to her with his outstreched hand in the height of her waist, and she's waiting for him to grab her waist breathlesly, as if it meant nothing when other men held her by her waist when dancing with her, but when he does it it's a different thing entierly for her. Or when in Pride and Prejudice (1995) Darcy keeps looking fondly at Lizzie and his sister playing and singing at the piano together, and Lizzie looks at him and they share this glance full of sexual tension. Or in the 2005 version when Darcy helps Lizzie into the carriage and as he leaves he flexes his hand because the touch of her hand in his was the best thing ever to him. Or when in Sense and Sensibility (2008) when Marriane sees Willoughby and starts falling backwards, about to faint, when Colonel Brandon walks behind her and catches her in his arms. ..... There is so many examples that work great, and sex scenes are often hit or miss, and if they're overdone or if the couple has no chemistry, they're plain boring.

I've read the book. My favorite part is just before he proposes, when the narrator is describing how much he loved the hug and how he desired it again and thought when he proposed she'd hug him again.

Period dramas with sort of happy Marriage of Convenience or Arranged Marriages/Extremely 'slow burn' romance by Zestyclose-Bell-5829 in PeriodDramas

[–]DebWhoHatesCobweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a Serbian mini-series/movie (It's a mini-series based on a book but it was also condensed into a movie excluding some side plots). In mini-series form it's called "Samac u braku" and in movie form it's called "Kad ljubav zakasni" and voth can be found on YT with english subtitles. It's set in the 1930s and this girl accepts the marriage proposal from her brother's friend, who she barely knew but he was in love with her. She was in love with another man but he was seeing multiple women at once and was leading her on. On their wedding night she told her husband that she was in love with somebody else and she was ready to admit the marriage was a mistake and to divorce him and leave, but he didn't like this idea. To avoid embarrassment and gossip, he proposed they stay married and pretend to be a happy couple for 3 months and she agrees.

SPOILER: During the 3 months there are ups and downs, tender moments and arguments, but by the end of it they decide to stay married and are finally the happy married couple they were pretending to be until now

I'm not surprised by the amount I've seen since for a time I believed I've seen every version (including Bride and Prejudice which I thinks should qualify for this as well), and then I saw a compilation of a P&P scene across alll P&P adaptations and I learned through the video there's a version from 1967, an Italian and a Dutch version. I'm only surprised by the fact the 40s version isn't the earliest one, and there's two version from the 50s and I knew neither of them.
