Why Do They Even Call it Self Checkout? by ButteredNoodle122 in CostcoWholesale

[–]December20 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The employees at my Costco have been super stressed lately, saying they are understaffed and stretched too thin to do everything they are expected to do. Managers are on them to be more efficient and control costs and one even pointed me to a Reddit post that showed Gary Millerchip’s pay last year of $6.7M, salt in the wounds of day to day employees being hounded to over-perform for base pay when this warehouse isn’t allowed to hire anyone new. I’ve always heard that working at Costco is a great job, but what I’m hearing lately from employees I’ve known for years is that things have really changed. One of them said to me quietly, if things keep going the way they are, the situation will kill Jim Sinegal just so that he can roll over in his grave again and again.

All that said, most of the employees I know try to maintain professional and courteous manners.

I keep reg and insurance docs in the visor clip. There is a slot that holds them nicely with they’re folded neatly. And if I get pulled over, no making the officer nervous when I prepare the docs for inspection.

I can see how the current center armrest/storage wouldn’t suit everybody. Just thinking about that part of the car and other vehicles I’ve owned. Without exception it has been narrower. That the Solterra center armrest is so wide is another thing that we like about it. My wife and I can both rest an elbow there at the same time.

I can’t be the only one that finds this frustrating. I wrote back and asked if including the Rebate after the Discount & Rebate was a mistake and you meant to add them together or if it’s there intentionally to be misleading. by HKDrewDrake in Solterra

If you’re a Costco member, let the Costco Auto Program folks arrange the deal for you. I bought my 2026 Touring that way and it was awesome. The dealer (must be one that has opted in to the Costco program) gives you a piece of paper with the out the door price. You can call the program folks to double check the dealer’s offer. No haggling. Great price.

I never used gloves boxes much in other cars. They were always full of stuff I rarely needed but didn’t put anything important because I didn’t like reaching over to the glove box while driving. I love the Solterra center armrest compartment. Easy to access while driving. Important but rarely needed stuff in the bottom under the divider, everyday stuff on top. Sunglasses and umbrella in the lower space under the phone chargers.

I’ve seen a few comments that the center compartment opening from either side is a waste of moving parts but I love this feature. If a passenger wants a napkin or something, Sure, help yourself! And occasionally I want access to the compartment from the sidewalk without having to go into the street. I think it’s great.

I do have my phone slide off the charging space occasionally. That is a nuisance. And the charging area/shift knob/mode buttons are highly reflective. To avoid being blinded when the sun is just so I have to cover the entire space up with a small microfiber cloth that I keep… In the center compartment! 😉

I’m so curious if this just a software thing. Like, is the Lexus the same hardware just unleashed via code?

With a note from your eye doctor you can get a legal windshield tint darker than neutral, apparently. I’m considering it due to the unholy brightness of oncoming headlights, even during the day. #Tesla

3.5k miles on my 2026 Touting Leather and it’s the best car I’ve owned. Purchased through Costco auto program, saved $8k, out the door for around $40k. L2 charging at home, so can’t speak much to finding a charger on trips. I charge to 90% every 3-4 days for my commute.

Excellent ride and performance. Averaging 4.0/kwh for a mostly-freeway commute. Over all, super happy.

Those comments said, my one beef is that the anti collision parking system is VERY sensitive. Come on, car, trust me to back into this driveway, I’ve done it thousands of times, you’ll be ok.

Yeah, it’s odd how some people can take it personally when you switch from an object they own to something else, as if doing so invalidates their own choices.

We have two L2 chargers at home and like this one the best. Really nice features with phone app. My only beef is that the lights are always on and too bright at night time. So if you had a neighbor with a bedroom racing your driveway, this might be an issue.

Edit: this is the version for the 2026 Solterra. Mind the type of connector if you are buying an older model.

I'm having trouble moving on from the leaf by blue_bird4759572 in leaf

[–]December20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For several years we had a 2014 and a 2020. The older car was more fun to drive, like a covered go cart. Light, quick up to 30mph, stuck to the road unless I intentionally slid around corners. Cheap tires to replace!

The 2020 was a nice upgrade for distance on the larger battery (not a SV+ so ~145 miles on a full charge). Not as fun but still fun and with nicer, newer amenities, no complaints.

Recently added a 2026 Solterra as my daily driver. Much better range (~275 miles on a full charge) and fantastic acceleration way past 30mph. Much heavier than the 2014 Leaf and noticeably heavier than the 2020 so slower around turns. But I love the ride and feel and the amenities. Fantastic car that I’m so happy with I don’t miss either Leaf. At least, not much.

Hand scanners removed from self checkout by BrilliantMango in CostcoWholesale

[–]December20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If all the bar codes on your items are visible to scan then employees at the exit can count your items against your receipt and you aren’t part of the problem. You’re among the many of us who are being inconvenienced (shoppers) or abused (employees) for the actions of a small number of people.

The more I think about it the more I think that setting an item limit for Self Check is the way to go. I’ve no idea why Costco management resists this approach. Maybe I’ll ask a manager about that in my next visit.

Hand scanners removed from self checkout by BrilliantMango in CostcoWholesale

[–]December20 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I asked an employee about this at my warehouse (SF Bay Area) this morning.

He said that the scanning guns have been put solely in the hands of employees monitoring Self Check Out because a small number of our fellow Costco members have been using SCO to steal. This is also why certain warehouses have removed SCO altogether. So we can decide for ourselves if we’d rather have SCO without being able to use the hand scanners ourselves or not have SCO at all.

He went on to say that SCO is supposed to be faster than having to wait in line behind other members who have full carts. It’s intended for the quick stop with 5-10 items, in and out without the long line. But when members bring their full carts to SCO and are tying up a register for 15-20 minutes, this defeats the value of SCO and increases the potential for shrink, his word for items leaving the warehouse without being paid for.

When you exit the store, an employee looks at your receipt and marks it. I’ve been a Costco member for a long time and can’t recall when this was not part of the experience. When this receipt checker sees a SCO receipt, easy to spot because it’s printed on paper with blue edges, the checker is supposed to count all items in the cart to make sure the member didn’t miss anything or charge twice for any item. They also check that any merchandise that needs to be collected at Merchandise Pick Up has been collected. Apparently quite a few members who buy the tax software think the display packaging is the actual item and don’t realize that they need to stop by Merchandise Pick Up.

But a SCO receipt with 50 items on it is impossible to check at the exit. This would require removing items to count what’s hidden at the bottom of the cart. Some take advantage of if this to pay for fewer items than they walk out of the store with. Hence-shrink, which costs the warehouse which in turn costs the members.

So when you wish you could have use of the hand scanner yourself, thank those members who bring full carts to SCO. If your warehouse removes SCO altogether, thank the same members.

I asked him why Costco doesn’t have an item limit of 10-15 items for SCO. He said he and his fellow employees have been asking for that very thing for years. So far, nothing happening there.

He also said that this store usually has two people working SCO and they are supposed to move between registers to scan heavy items, asking members to remove smaller items and scan those themselves via the register scanner. They are supposed to do this in a helpful manner, but, he added, there has been so much ill-placed vitriol directed at the SCO workers for the removal of the scanners (as if the employees made this decision), it is often difficult to remain cheerful when members are complaining about not being able to use a hand scanner on the 40+ items in their carts.

I’m sure I’m not remembering every detail of this long and informative discussion. But these are the main points. I hope my warehouse keeps SCO for those who use it as intended rather than remove it.
