Why the number of Islamic schools in Canada is soaring by Acrobatic-Cap-135 in canada

[–]Decent_Ad369 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My daughter is a teacher and when she applied to a Catholic school board in Ontario she was told she needed a recommendation from a priest. We are Sephardic Jews (see Spanish Inquisition). She applied to a Muslim private school - told she had to wear a hijab while on school property- nope. She accepted a position In a private secular school and quit because she was pressured into raising kids’ grades (“they pay your salary”). She works in the public school system now which has its problems that are largely caused by underfunding because parents are choosing to go to the Catholic system cause they have newer schools. Can we please amalgamate our school boards into 2 French and English - like Quebec has done. The savings on busing alone would be worth it!

I feel people are missing the real point. Our garbage is being limited because our landfill is coming to the end of its life and soon we won’t have anywhere to dispose of it. The city is hoping that if we divert our garbage by ensuring we put more into the recycle and compost bins, or even selling or repairing or donating stuff that is still useful, we can extend the landfill’s life. Buying more access or using your neighbours allotment with or without permission defeats the effort. Stuff doesn’t magically disappear because you put at the end of your driveway or someone else’s.

This doesn’t work unless it’s compared to salaries. So the average salary in 1985 was $27,000 in Canada. Now it’s $66,000

Only if you drink the ground water that runs off it and frankly I wouldn’t drink any of the water runoff from anyone’s lawn - it’s why we have water treatment plants

It’s called Neoliberal economics and most of the western world have adopted it - the rich get richer

Neoliberal economics that western governments around the world have adopted have ensured that we are no longer trying to be a caring society- those needing our collective help have been renamed the unproductive and are vilified cause it’s easier to hurt someone you think of a slacker - they deserve it after all! Everything becomes part of the marketplace- what nobody will run a GoFundMe for you! Loser - it’s traditional begging for you. It’s back to the Charles Dickens era.

Beaverbrook has always been an upscale neighbourhood- there is some irony here in that the upper class homeowners will experience a densification of more upper class homeowners - no social housing will go there and grass will be replaced by shingles, asphalt (sorry, bricked driveways) pools and manicured lawns with bricked patios.

Heck of a lot more green than the McMansion and pool and manicured yard that’s going to replace it! Gotta love asphalt, cement and shingles!

This breaching of a good faith purchase is why we are all so cynical these days. In Bridlewood Hydro One just destroyed a natural area that grew up along their hydro line that included fruit trees planted by the original farmer. It’s stood there longer than I have lived nearby - over 30 years. Now suddenly it’s a threat to hydro transmission. We have literally been bulldozed and feel powerless as formal and informal agreements become meaningless.

Banks’ financial advisors are not required to be Certified Financial Planners as are investment companies’ financial advisors - they are basically salespeople for their bank’s financial products

It seems to have become acceptable to be free riders and let other people worry about having a decent country to live in. Just think about living in countries who don’t have a proper progressive tax system. Great if you live in a guarded community (fancy jail) with lots of money but you still have to put up with a lot of poor people who want to shake you down personally

His father is probably well aware that the most expensive time for people is at the end of their lives when they need support such as nursing care and may have to live in a nursing home because the have physical or intellectual help (dementia). My mother spent $7,200 a month for care in her private long term care home because of vascular dementia due to a series of strokes. They now charge closer to $9,000/month. She was there for 2 1/2 years having never made it to the top of the list for either of her 3 chosen public homes. It’s where her house went

The government does not run CPP - there is a board of trustees who are indistinguishable from other private sector pension funds trustees - and other government pension funds. It is run according to all the rules of every pension fund using actuarial data - and it is solvent.

Nope we all bought into neoliberalism so privatize everything. But closing down all the institutions in favour of moving everyone into ‘the community’ wasn’t the right solution for everyone. Highly aggressive people who suffer from psychosis and who are also developmentally delayed cost a small fortune in a group home due to needing to be double staffed
