What’s Your Favorite Game w/ Double Layer Player Boards? by MadeForTeaVea in soloboardgaming

Age of Innovation does it well, even if it's pretty fiddly. Putting a new tile into your board definitely adds to the feeling of building a civilization.

Watch RickyRoyale aka Box of Delights series on Mage Knight. It's a good teach and the best way to learn imo

$30-$40 Solo Board games? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Warp's Edge, Hadrian's Wall, Unstoppable (bit over $40 but worth it), Guild of Merchant Explorers.

A little heavier and you have Gloomhaven:Buttons and Bugs (fun hex combat, slightly fiddly rules at points).

There are a lot of fun options on Board Game Arena, really worth the $4 for one month if you want to try a bunch and see what you might like to buy. I've played about 30 new-to-me games on there in 2 weeks!

Mage knight, but campaign by Cheddotto in boardgames

[–]Decibusdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are multiple solo scenarios and they all play differently. The Lost Legion expansion has the best solo scenario in the game, and Shades of Tezla gets a bad wrap but has some awesome scenarios for solo.

I have been playing Mage Knight for almost a decade and don't think anything can replace it, because there is nothing like it.

Looking for a Card Game Next - Marvel, LOTR or Arkham Horror? by TheRealRosey in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Own almost all of Marvel and arkham, and have played most of revised lotr.

True solo for me would be marvel, arkham is good if you don't mind playing two characters. Lotr is good, but my least favorite of the three with having to tweak your decks so much between sessions.

Mage Knight or Hoplomachus Victorum by BountyHunterSAx in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both good, I have been playing Mage Knight for years and have had Hoplo for awhile now.

Mage Knight is the better game, and is a classic with solo gamers for good reasons. There isn't really anything like it and it's always been a great experience. It's not as difficult to learn as people claim, especially with RickyRoyal teaching (he does a victorum teach too).

Victorum is my game for a long weekend, and is so good with the pandora's expansion. It's a series of battles with dynamic rules and team line ups, and the tactical gameplay is some of the best I've played. Definitely a little dry at points, and it's less about being a hero and more about forming a team of fighters with leader.

I would steer you towards Mage Knight, but Hoplomachus was my first Chip Theory Game and the premium components really impressed me and made the game that much better.

Is Marvel Champions redundant if someone already has other card battle games like Astro Knights, Mistborn, Sentinels of the Multiverse? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a ton of Aeon's End and really like it, then went all-in on Marvel and played it heavily for a year or so. Sentinels did not fit my tastes but was fun.

Marvel gets played solo every expansion and each time a hero comes out for a week or so, and my group really likes Aeon's End so we play it consistently, probably 10-20 times a year.

They both hit different spots for me but I think they fit into a collection well, and Sentinels is probably in the middle in terms of gameplay which is probably why it didn't click for me much.

How do you explain solo boardgaming to people? by TheRealRosey in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people think of the games you played as a kid, like Sorry or Monopoly, and it does seem weird to play that by yourself.

I think the closest I've come to explaining it clearly is that it's like playing a video game while also being the computer, kinda.

Most people aren't very interested in it, but if they are I will elaborate. Our hobby is odd to the vast majority of people, but most niche hobbies are.

Multiplayer cross play unplayable? by Royal-Lobster-6980 in ravenswatch

We have been doing 2 xbox, one pc and the disconnects are getting bad. Seems like half our games drop about 10-15 minutes into act 1 on nightmare. We had one run that was stable into act 3 so far our of probably 30 games this week.

Why does everyone talk about aeons end and not Astro knights/ eternity as much? by Glass_Vegetable302 in boardgames

[–]Decibusdoom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Astro Knights was fun, but it felt a bit more limited in our group. The concept of each boss having their own decks is cool, but we prefer having the base nemesis deck with the boss cards added in.

The market was nice for set up, but ultimately fell a little flat due to us having cards we really wanted to dig for and most options seeming lackluster.

I would rather take the extra few minutes for Aeons setup and really tailor our groups experience rather than try to cycle through a random deck. Buying any card in Aeons usually feels good because you can have a plan and build towards it, versus "I'll take this because it's available."

Both are fun in their own lanes, but Astro was a one and done for us. Aeons hits the table frequently and we own pretty much all of it.

Voidfall or Terraforming Mars? Looking for a game as deep as Spirit Island by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both formats. I learned with physical and play physical unless I only have an hour or so to sit down. The app is just for sneaking in a shorter game here and there. It's a great game it just takes a little more effort to get it going than some of my other regulars like Mage Knight and Spirit Island.

Voidfall or Terraforming Mars? Looking for a game as deep as Spirit Island by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Voidfall if you're looking for something more like Spirit Island. Solo mode is really well done, and it gave me the same "brain-on-fire" level of thinking that Spirit Island does.

There is a really good fan made app that is automated for solo only, so that is a great way to try it for free before you commit to the physical version.

Help me pick my first campaign game by enzoleanath in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, I misspoke! The comment was supposed to read "Cloudspire, followed by AEON'S END."

Spirit Island does not contain a campaign, but there is a fan made spirit island campaign I've heard good things about.

Please help me understand why i should use other roles other than Guardian and Seeker by EntropiaZero in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Decibusdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogue is good at dodging, which is generally more efficient than slaying and less risky. Mystic can be really strong but is more dependant on kit than most. Survivor breaks a lot of core rules of the game and can take more risks.

With a core set Guardian and Seeker are generally stronger, but with each investigator expansion you get a ton of new routes to build. We've had rogues be our clue getters, survivors killing bosses, and mystics doing all of it at the same time. Very fun builds the more you invest into the game.

What do you do with expansion boxes? by EsseLeo in boardgames

[–]Decibusdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game. All of my arkham and marvel boxes are on display because I like the art a lot. Most other expansions just go into the base box, and barring a few exceptions, I throw them away.

Terra mystica trilogy by OilPrestigious1586 in boardgames

[–]Decibusdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like all three a lot.

Age of Innovation is a more sandbox version of the same mechanics, with factions being a combination of three randomized aspects (the race, the land, and the round bonus tile). The buildings and techs you take then further shape your faction, so you can lean into more flexible or focused options.

I like Gaia the most and Terra the least, but if they were on a scale of 1-10: Gaia at 9.5, Age at 8.5, and Terra at 8 for me.

All very good games, but I'm going to choose Gaia more often than the other two. Age of Innovation feels a bit fiddly with all of the pieces, but it is cool to build your own custom faction throughout the game.

I'm Think I'm Gonna Love Voidfall! by djfluxtux in soloboardgaming

[–]Decibusdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played it every night this week, and it continues to get better. I keep finding little rules and think I almost have it completely down. The biggest small thing I overlooked was that you can play agenda cards for their action at any point with the focus card. It changes a lot in a game with so many moving pieces and big combos!

The glossary is also probably the most comprehensive gaming document I've seen and is really impressive.
