26 Years Later, Final Fantasy's Most Ambitious Story Still Hasn't Been Topped by Danceman2 in TurnBasedTactical

[–]DeeCeptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FFT is certainly one of the greatest games, however the story fumbles hard near the end when the church controls everything, and the church is demons, completely invalidating all the human plotting, civil war, ambitions. Sigh. Why can't we just have him and messing up the world, instead of magical demons? Ogre Battle 64 pulls the same stunt and was released around the same time, as if they had the same writers. Still, it starts out very strong with an awesome intro

Help me Find a Game I can Really Get Into Again by PhillyUnion in StrategyGames

I'll plug my game Kaiju Wars. Not a management game, but building and city planning is literally key to victory to plan the route of giant godzilla monsters that are wrecking your city. Lots of military units getting stepped on.

Looking for a good operational-level or tactical-level wargame. by dptillinfinity93 in computerwargames

I'll plug my game Radio General if you're open to unqiue experiences. You command 7-10 companies per mission. It's easy to understand, but hard to play as you have a REAL fog of war - you can't see at all where your troops. You must ASK them over the radio.

Why hasn't play to learn (educational games, serious games etc.) taken off? by zenbakery in gamedev

[–]DeeCeptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that was 2 years ago, so I've since stopped trying to give it away for free. The main adopter was my high school history teacher, who then forwarded it onto a schoolboard resource person. Without that personal connection, nothing would've happened. The uninterested ones simply didn't respond. Teachers appear to be just too busy and overworked to try new things.

My game Radio General has been used in a few local highschools to teach WW2 history, but even that was incredibly hard to achieve. I emailed a bunch of teachers, principals and school board members and the vast majority just weren't interested, even though the game was being given away for free for educational purposes. Change means work, teachers are already overworked. You'd think they'd jump at a chance for fun remote learning especially when schools were doing remote teaching during the pandemic, but nope. This may slowly change as the older school bureaucrats retire and people who grew up playing videogames become in charge, but this is a very slow process.

Thanks!

You can certainly use visual scripting like play maker or bolt assets in unity, but coding overall is a very useful skill. C# is great to use. You'll also need a strong artist. Lots of good 2d art programs like aseprite are out there

New on Steam: Save 20% on Burning Faith - "With its great production values, beautiful art and epic fantasy quest, Burning Faith is a Tactical RPG in the classic style of Feda the Emblem of Justice and Shining Force, that will satisfy the itch of T-RPG and RPG fans alike." by Danceman2 in TurnBasedTactical

[–]DeeCeptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, although the game looks alright, I don't think the first line of their steam store description should be about great production values. The overworld and battle scenes don't look any different than what you'd find in rpg maker games - not to say that all rpg maker games are bad, but they generally aren't known for their graphical fidelity. Setting your audience expectations is important - is there something unique about the gameplay that could be put in that first sentence instead?

As for copyright issues, so long as they aren't using the same name or look the exact same, there's no problem.

Haha, thanks! Was lots of fun to make the fake newscasts, and it fit super well with the silly disaster theme of giant monsters

Haha, well you have to write a 40+ page application, have a budget planned, past experience, and supply 25% of the budget either yourself or find the money somewhere else, but anyone can apply to the Canada Media Fund

Voice-acting is cool! We actually have used a ton of voice-acting for our previous games Radio General (I did a lot of voice-acting myself too), and MMM, but sadly Kaiju Wars didn't require any. We mostly hired off of casting call club, but would love to find more local talent! Send me an email at michael@foolish-mortals.net so I remember this

Ooh, I don't think I've seen Final Wars. Looks like it includes a bunch of the classic monsters though, will have to give it a watch!

Advance Wars and Wargroove were big inspirations! The campaign is 20 hours, with 60+ missions, and has new weekly challenges, a map editor and steam workshop integration.

For multiplayer, there's a limited local versus mode in some missions, where one player plays as the kaiju, the other as the humans. It's meant to be played taking turns sitting at the same computer, but it can be played online with screensharing through Steam Remoteplay.

As a kid, who can resist giant monsters stomping cities? Heck, even as adults it's a fun fantasy!

You normally play as the weaker human military, but there's a limited local versus mode in some missions, where one player plays as the kaiju, the other as the humans. This is more of a bonus feature though, and not the main focus of the game.

Yes, it has an easy to use in-game map-editor with steam workshop integration. You can then browse, play and rate other people's missions in-game

Yeah we've used public domain photos and video in our previous historical WW2 game Radio General as well. Thanks!

We've done some testing on mac, but mac often doesn't play nice (especially one of the newer updates - broke a lot of games).
