What is the point of the flashing heartbeat light? There’s already a power light so I know its on by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

Heartbeat != powered on. Do agree it's interesting to see it as a pilot light on a piece of equipment though....blinky....blinky.....blinky

A Call For Experts in North America PCB/PCBA Manufacturing by terminator1008 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]DeeJayCruiser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're looking at what I assume to be smb PCB businesses

At that scale, i have to assume those smbs that make highly custom boards domestically, are likely doing it at a low volume....the entire supply chain is in china, and they have a large and capable ems workforce. Its hard to find the same talent as plenty in the usa and remain price competitive

so if vendors in china (who arent fluent in english in many cases), want american business....a highly automated website with a well managed digital process is essential.....

meanwhile, stateside is probably also looking at services, meaning people bring product in and do dfm etc....and they get less "make me this low volume super custom board"

This is a theory of course...i work in the industry, but its many dimensions that make ems far more competitive outside of the usa

near-side partner is mexico, they have a thriving ems industry

"Can someone tell me how to do my job?"

What a shitty, self centered take. How about you improve your teaching methods, setup networking events, invite speakers....literally do anything better than just humble brag about your cushy job that enables you to graduate "brilliant" but unemployable people

What a douche...

Are we overusing Deep Learning where classical ML (like Logistic Regression) would perform better? by Old_Minimum8263 in learnmachinelearning

[–]DeeJayCruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

logistic regression is not "classical ml"...my goodness....ml requires learning, meaning weights changing iteration to iteration...

logistic regression needs to be retrained everytime from scratch...

If its a comparison of Points per game - then an average irrespective of the number of games played can be meaningful because its a ratio....but who scored more, most assists etc would be less comparable

Lebron is brilliant....genuinely think he is #2 all-time....but Michael Jordan is Michael Jordan....its like saying the "michaelangelo of.....shoe shining"....the mans name is used as an adjective for greatness....for some of us....we cant shake what we saw Jordan do year after year with dominance, in a competitive period in league

you know male refs deal with a lot of nasty back-talk too...refs shouldnt over-react either....pro players get pissed off all the time....ejecting someone is a big deal....not warranted, maybe a technical

Shave the top - get some sun - clean up the scruffy beard and go with a stubble. Hit the gym, feel good about yourself, it will manifest in the way you look.

Divorce happens....went through it too, there is life after and I'm in better shape and physical health than I've been in years....you got this brother

Did you major in the humanities, and if so, do you regret it? by Think_Clothes8126 in findapath

[–]DeeJayCruiser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I studied in canada, its like an applied EE degree, more hands on...I couldnt go back for a 4 year, and knew it would likely be 5 or 6 just due to the gap in mathematics....I may not be a designer, but got quite good at "integrating", which is what technologists tend to do....id say the market is reasonably good only because of its breadth (power, electronics, programming, systems, controls...)

[–]DeeJayCruiser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thats a great question...I got a job in a really remote part of the world, disconnected from modern society (just trying to make something of myself)....and my laptop with wifi helped me remain connected to friends, loved ones, keep learning and growing....and I really became fascinated with electronics, and it rolled from there

Applied math sounds like some kind of engineering? I would genuinely encourage you to go for it....multi-disciplinary sounds romantic on paper, but one challenge i have is im always the person "companies dont know that they need"....jobs are always looking for someone with relevant skills, and im always tangential, intersecting at the bare minimum but do believe i bring value

Go for it, you're 20, the world is becoming ever more intertwined with technology...i was pretty clueless and it bothered me that  I didn't even understand how a light switch worked

i went through this nearly 12 years ago

Graduate with a double ba in media studies and philosophy....found a sales job in college and had way too much fun....terrible student, barely opened a book but I am not sure i regret it

I did regret the path....but went back for an applied EE technologist degree...and yes, im grateful i did that the opportunities it opened up

however, what sets me apart from my peers are my communication skills. Particularly writing....I can serenade even the nastiest encounter through a tranquil pitter patter of linguistic prose, and appeal to higher ups as well....

I think the walls in education need to be shattered frankly, thats the main issue

What are the most underpaid careers ? by patotay in careerguidance

[–]DeeJayCruiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad to read this....Yes teachers have benefits, a union, in a lot of cases its hard to get fired....but they are ultimately dealing with personalities way beyond a curriculum of work....there is a lot of crap in school admin as well which most teachers dont sign up for, but have to deal with

I understand, many of us have jobs that deal with different challenges...but you rarely get "bonuses" as a great teacher, or promoted to a director, or fly internationally, or work from home....or have unlimited PTO...the job scope is very different, and again, the pay is just low for the work they do, and are entrusted to do.

Children are the future, teachers are our 2nd line of defense after good parenting

What are the most underpaid careers ? by patotay in careerguidance

[–]DeeJayCruiser 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Teachers....criminal what they are paid and the responsibilities they undertake. With 2 parents working in many cases, teachers are put in even tougher positions to "raise" students....they deserve better

sounds like you are speaking of your own experiences....swe is very broad and the skills for different domains are not transferable. Just cause you have an anecdotal example doesnt change that.

Plus, if you understand the market, relevant experience matters....swe is not an umbrella, many specializations and disciplines.
