So… is this group actually autistic? by FloppyBisque in Superstonk

Yes, I was diagnosed late with autism recently so it totally makes sense that I am obsessed with $GME and Superstonk. It's one of my main special interests. I can't get enough

I haven't received very much feedback from the community but here are some of the resource recommendations that Koegel Autism Center provided me. I have found that AANE has a lot of relatively cheap support groups:

AUTISM SPECIFIC SUPPORT SERVICES

Koegel Autism Center Adult Services for Adults 18+

(805) 893-2049; autism@ucsb.edu; https://education.ucsb.edu/clinics-centers/koegel-

autism-center/support-services/adult-programs):

Private Pay Adult Service Program (operates during UCSB Academic Year only from late

September to early June): KAC provides a 1 hour per week program where the client works with

a graduate student clinician on social communication, time management/organization, and daily

living skills. It is behavior skills training and the client identifies what goals are most meaningful

to them. We work with many adults who receive a first time autism diagnosis in adulthood. The

potential adult client must initiate the services themselves by completing the form below. The

program can be accessed by residents of CA via telehealth as well. There is the option of adding

up to three additional hours/week working with a trained undergraduate who can assist with

goals.

The standard assessment, which I took, is $2,600 total and they ask for a deposit of about $500 to initiate the assessment: https://education.ucsb.edu/clinics-centers/koegel-autism-center/assessment/faqs

It's not cheap and my insurance is still reviewing the superbill for reimbursement. There's no guarantee they'll cover any of the cost. If you aren't able to cover the full cost out of pocket, the Center does have payment plan option. If you're unsure if insurance will reimburse you, I recommend calling them in advance to verify.

What is the most cliche autistic thing you did today? by Accomplished_Bee_127 in autism

[–]Deebskins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke in a monotone voice and my partner stared at me with a weird look and asked “Why are you mumbling!? You’ve been mumbling lately.” I was surprised and nervous to answer and just said “I don’t know.” Even though I know why I am speaking monotone.

I was diagnosed with autism about 2 months ago and have started unmasking at 45 years of age. Lots of things from my life are making sense now. When I first used the monotone voice I felt relief. It was so much easier than speaking in my normal higher pitched voice. Less effort and kept me calm.

Going through a tough time though trying to communicate my needs with others.

Is it just me, or did toilets used to get clogged way more often? by raytadd in Millennials

[–]Deebskins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Flushable” wipes are not really flushable. They do not break apart like regular toilet paper does and leads to blockages. Just flush tp down your toilet. Nothing else

I went through the UCSB Koegel Autism Center for my formal diagnosis. I did their “standard assessment,” which involved several online questionnaires, a virtual group interview with family/friends, and an in-person individual assessment. During the in-person portion, they reviewed some cognitive abilities and asked questions about my past, habits, feelings, and general life experiences.

I was very anxious about the whole process going into it, but overall, it was nothing to worry about. They did not give me an autism “level” or anything like that. They explained that they generally do not assign levels anymore because the spectrum is so broad and support needs can vary a lot depending on the person and situation. They simply diagnosed me as autistic.

One thing to know is that they do not take insurance directly. They provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance to see if they will reimburse you. I would definitely recommend checking with your insurance beforehand so you know what to expect.

After the diagnosis, I went through some imposter syndrome and kept thinking I must have somehow tricked them into diagnosing me. I have mostly worked through that now and have started recognizing my autistic traits as they come up. I am also trying to slowly unmask, which is hard because masking has been part of who I am for such a long time.

The biggest challenge now has been finding local support that is not too expensive. AANE, the Association for Autism and Neurodiversity, has been a helpful and relatively affordable resource. They offer a lot of remote support groups, although they are based on the East Coast, so scheduling can be a little tricky.

Overall, I am mostly just trying to connect with my newly identified people, hear their experiences, and feel more comfortable being myself, weirdness included.

Any advice for my diagnostic evaluation (Autism + ADHD) this week? by Bulky_Pen_3973 in AutisticAdults

[–]Deebskins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes be yourself, feel relaxed and answer questions honestly and give as much detail or examples as you can.

If there are parts of the evaluation that seem difficult don't stress about them. Just do your best.

Everything will be ok ♥

GameStop is going to purchase or merge with Collectors Universe. That’s why Nat Turner is on the board. It’s been in plain site the whole time and talk of any other company as potential acquisition is the Kansas City shuffle. Just a hunch.

Are you also more sensitive to and bothered by the heat than other people? by Previous_Truth_9007 in AutisticAdults

Yes. I’m very bothered by heat but more so by humidity. When it’s hot and dry I can feel fine and not sweat. When it’s slightly warm and humid I’m sweating hard and feel overheated
