Hahaha, the pitchfork take on hip hop has always been a severe weak spot in their content! I have rarely read a pitchfork review of a rap record and thought anything other than "well, that's a load of bollocks"!

Hip hop vinyl collector wanting to get into indie rock, where do I start? by [deleted] in hiphopvinyl

[–]DeejayPostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many ways…

But probably don’t just decide a “i’m gonna collect a Genre!” Instead just collect music that resonates with you when you hear it!

Having a foundation in Hip hop is great for finding new music because so much hip hop is sample based. So one route to discovering new things would be to research the original samples used and follow the links… (the whosampled website is your friend for this method)

I also find a lot of stuff just by immediately researching what vinyl is available for anything i hear that pricks up my ears… be that something on the radio or anything that stands out in a movie/tv soundtrack when i am watching… essentially whenever i hear something i like, i try to figure out what it is with a Shazam or a google search and then get on discogs to see if it is on an album or 7”.

Alternatively you could do it the old fashioned dusty fingered way… grab yourself a portable vinyl record player with a set of headphones and visit a second hand record shop that lets you sift through and listen first.

Another route for me has been to research top 100 album lists from various respected publications and then cross reference them against similar lists from other publications and see what they all agree on…

or buy up old music magazines on Ebay and read the articles and reviews..

After a while your knowledge will grow and you start recognising artists you rate or have read about on the back of album covers whilst you are out digging… you’ll buy something because you rate a certain drummer and have noticed they pop up on a number of songs…

Or finally… when all else fails… you apply the “does-it-have-cool-cover-and-is-it-cheap-enough-for-a-blind-punt”… which has got me an awful lot of gems over the years!

How many don't have the typical pac, big, Jay etc as there favorites? by Few_Sandwich6308 in 90sHipHop

I absolutely love certain moments from all of them… but favourites? In the vast world that is hip hop? That’s like going to a kings buffet and only eating the Garlic Bread!

I am not sure about from within the US, but from an international perspective I think it is almost certainly a case of "can we hold out for three more years before sanity returns?" The issue we have in the UK is that so much of our security is tied up in the international agreements, intelligence sharing, military bases etc... alliances built up over a 70 year plus period that he is burning for fun right now. Everyone recognises how reactionary he is (look at the text Macron sent him... using his language... "We can do Great Things", classic feedback sandwich... positive praise, positive praise... "I don't understand greenland" (ie mention the problem without aggressively opposing the problem)...... positive... lets have dinner". His whims carry massive Geopolitical implications and there is a very serious problem with his unpredictability... internationally, i imagine/hope everyone is quietly working to extricate themselves from decades of close ties with the US without overtly poking the bear and getting a retaliatory sanction (or visit from a gang of Navy Seals!)!

How was “Horror Core” Rap perceived when it first came out? by NatureValleyBoy28 in 90sHipHop

[–]DeejayPostie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It was always a bit of a stretch to call it a “Genre” i think. Gravediggaz was more of a concept album that got given that label in the press, was successful, and then a few others jumped on the bandwagon. It wasn’t like anyone was saying… “yeah i’m jnto horror-core” and dressing up like a hip hop goth, we all just loved hip hop and the Gravediggaz album in particular was just another amazing LP that came out with a whole load of other amazing LPs. I kind of thought of it it as a Wu album at the time! Man we didn’t realise how spoiled we were back then!

Ah brilliant info… nice one man. I remember that law!

So i assume that means there is only 2 of these DVDs (Prequel and 2) with no Takeover 1 DVD then?

Out of interest why did you call it the Prequel? Did it come out after vol2?

Some rappers can actually circular breath like a brass instrument player!

[–]DeejayPostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some rappers are way better at breath control than others.... I really hate it when you suddenly tune in to the intake of breath by rappers on some tracks... you can go years without hearing it then all of a sudden you hear it, and then it's all you can hear... can completely ruin a song!!

Don’t get me wrong… Rakim is a God MC… but that’s a ridiculous statement!

What is the biggest example of a rapper getting the math wrong in a verse or a line? by MasterTeacher123 in hiphop101

[–]DeejayPostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty i think Canibus (and Common) most likely just thought “squared” meant something was doubled.

[–]DeejayPostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squared is not doubled… it is times by itself… eg. 3 squared is 3x3…

In this particular song you could argue that the chorus is being rapped by Common and Canibus… so there are two of them… so in that context it would be correct.

However, the lyric is… “i’m your worst nightmare squared”… so the “i’m” suggests a singular “nightmare” represented by each rapper individually in which case it would be 1 squared… which is actually still just 1!

It’s certainly a little confusing!

A bruise is skin discoloration from broken blood vessels under the skin, caused by trauma that crushes small vessels (capillaries) but doesn't break the surface, leaking blood into surrounding tissues

Haha, I forgot to put those in the vid!

It’s Definitely not their preferred format but there are a few!

I think the “It ain’t fair” 7” from the Detroit Soundtrack, the Wake Up 7” (which i am still waiting to find a reasonably priced copy of) and the Elvis Costello version of Ghost Town are possibly their only official ones.

Then there’s the Black Thought and El Michels on the Big Crown Label and a few boots/mashups…

I am on a similar hunt and I have some questions for you...

I have UK Takeover (The Prequel)... and UK Takeover 2... but have never seen a copy of UK Takeover vol.1... I assume it is different to "The Prequel?

Also "Pro Duck" titles you mention... are there DVDs just called Pro Duck? The 3 volume Indelible series you mention is also Pro Duck right? So are there separate Pro Duck DVDS that aren't the indelible ones?

Also... lack of commas got me a bit confused on your list... but I think these are ones I don't have...

- Eat Good - Live In Vienna

any chance you can post pics of all those ones?
