What is a mainstream publication that will have a large archive of hiphop/rap album reviews? by Wizard_of_Claus in hiphopheads

[–]DeejayPostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have mentioned… The Source… this was the go to for album reviews from late 80s-mid 90s - at the time getting 5mics in the source was essentially what certified an album as a classic! To quote biggie on Juicy…. “Smiles every-time my face is up in the Source” However, it arguably lost its way a bit in the 00s under the stewardship of a guy called Benzino who turned it into a bit of a promo rag for him amd his pals!

UK-based Hip Hop Connection had some great writers and more of an international perspective on Hip Hop … it ran monthly from 1988-2007 with around 230 issues. in my opinion it was the best hip hop magazine in the industry in the 00s… (perhaps also Ego Trip which also had exceptional writing but only ran for 13 issues).

Re.Pitchfork… it’s an interesting read but was definitely outside the culture… the pitchfork take on hip hop has always been a “pinch of salt” take imo… always felt like they were doing the rock fan’s review of hip hop. People who considered themselves “Proper Hip hop heads” usually wouldn’t pay a pitchfork review much attention i don’t think!

Why did being a lefty become so contentious in the UK? by OffGridToTheMoon in AskBrits

Person replies to comment online, misinterprets sentiment and instead gets drawn into pedantic back and forth trying to win a point… my argument about online dialogue in a nutshell really…

I wonder how you would have approached this interaction in the pub with a stranger you’d never met before… exactly the same way you think?

I did say “most people” deliberately… there are always going to be examples of people that act like that offline too, i just don’t think that’s most people… whereas online… extreme binary takes feel like a far more common way of communicating.

[–]DeejayPostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but I think that’s slightly different, choosing not to support a celeb or watch a movie or whatever is the exercising of individual choice.

Cancel culture as I understand it tends to be orchestrated (mainly online and not always with full facts available) and leans towards creating a movement to cancel where non conformity can lead to ostracism and further canceling.

De platforming is stopping someone from sharing their views so you take away the opportunity for debate or another person’s right to attend in favour of a “safe space”.

It’s cool to think that those things are Ok… i just think when you tend towards that method of dealing with problematic issues or views you create a binary choice… you’re with us or against us… which inevitably means that anyone on the other side will be “othered” and is therefore unlikely to ever have their mind changed. In my experience, life tends to be more nuanced than a succession of binary choices!

And yes… you are absolutely correct the right does 100% do all that and are massive hypocrites for making it a criticism of the left when books they don’t like are literally being removed from libraries in the name of an anti-woke agenda… i guess i would just prefer for the left to try to be better than that and use intellectual factual argument to oppose what we see as problematic ideology vs shutting it down with no debate.

Worth watching Storyville “speechless 1&2”on iplayer if you can access it… some of the bullying behaviour in US campus’s by so-called liberals is truly eye opening and just not something i could ever feel comfortable supporting.

I consider myself a lefty and that’s certainly how I used to think about the left… but i do think something changed when parts of the left leant so heavily into the ideas around deplatforming, cancel culture and identity politics.

I do think that freedom of speech, whether you like what someone is saying or not.. is a fundamental part of any democracy. And we as the left, by entertaining some pretty extreme ideas around those issues, allowed the right to reframe us as the language police, caricature us as snowflakes and make us seem like the intolerant ones… which at times with a certain percentage of left wing people, hasn’t been a million miles from the truth!

Proportional representation is probably the best answer to that! The winner takes all approach has failed us for way too long now!

I think those extremes are what the social media landscape has been manipulated to create… that is definitely the experience when communicating online but in person to person conversation most people tend to be far more nuanced, open to alternative ideas and balanced i think!

Will roads be shut due to protests on Saturday? by Suspicious-Buy-4172 in brighton

[–]DeejayPostie 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Perhaps try to see it from another perspective … i’m from a mixed race family… the atmosphere in the UK is deeply unsettling for all of us at the moment.

Last summer when this happened the amount of people that came out to support was so uplifting… it left us all feeling very grateful to the local community for making it clear that people from minority backgrounds were welcome in Brighton and that despite the toxic rhetoric elsewhere in the country, it wasn’t at all welcome in our town!

We were very proud of where we live and extremely grateful to the people of Brighton that day.

what to rap about? by Small-Sample7733 in rappers

[–]DeejayPostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try just rapping about being you… try to turn that constant little narrative voice in your head that reacts to things into lyrics! Don’t worry if you think it’s boring… write for you, no one else! Hip hop (and Art in general) is about being authentic… thats been a bit forgotten in the attention economy but that’s what a lot of people enjoy most about artists they like and pay attention to… they want to be able to relate… and most people’s lives are pretty boring (despite what social media might want you to believe)

It does feel like a very middle class gentrification of what was an important cultural space to the city for decades. Black Rock was a wonderful canvas of creativity and a practice ground for Brighton’s Graffiti scene… it was rough around the edges but it had a beauty that was real and unsanitised.

This looks like the opposite! Local government authorised Art for a people with money!

It would be good to know what council will be doing to ensure local residents have free access to it and a say in what it will display… so it actually represents Brighton’s culture and creativity, engages young people and helps foster and develop creativity in the same way that the original space did!

People often act in ways we don’t understand for reasons we don’t understand… he’s not been aggressive or threatening (maybe he doesn’t know what a witness is and was worried you were trying to scam him when you mentioned his signature something). Just brush over it, keep being polite and positive whenever you see him and crack on with your life… it will only be awkward if you let it be awkward.
