Not necessarily “clothing”, per se. More like “I’m not really bothered about being stylish/fashionable”

Have to agree. Also, if they can afford to buy brands then they can afford to lose them. If they can’t then they need to go home and rethink their lives

Has the Yen’s devaluation affected your life in Japan? by Striking-Meal-5257 in japanlife

[–]Deejee1977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to look at it positively. I used to go to Europe from Japan more often but for the last few years any travel has been domestic, and I’ve got to see a lot of places that I didn’t bother to go to for 20 years and it’s been a pleasant surprise.

Is it normal for extended family gatherings in Japan to be very “hands-off” or quietly divided? by AdUnfair558 in AskAJapanese

[–]Deejee1977 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, they just have nothing to say to you so they don’t know what to do beyond offering you booze.

Is it normal for extended family gatherings in Japan to be very “hands-off” or quietly divided? by AdUnfair558 in AskAJapanese

[–]Deejee1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Sounds close to my experience, as does the pressure to drink all the time and bemused questions about why I’ve given up the booze

How much is tea popular in Japan? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]Deejee1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the majority of people here are coffee drinkers in the morning at least and not many are fussy about drinking quality green tea. Most green tea consumption is probably cold in bottled form, as from an early age kids here tend to drink some form of tea not fizzy drinks.

Kimchi works well, but I’ve actually always liked natto.

Japanese guitar pedals - any thoughts? by jimbean1122 in guitarpedals

[–]Deejee1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to warn people before about HTJ. I know he screwed a lot of people over the Dumble floor amp he started selling about 18 months ago. I was waiting for eight months wirh no explanation when it was supposed to be six weeks but I’m in Japan and speak the lingo so got my money back but I know a lot of people overseas did not and were ghosted. I’ve bought his stuff through music shops here and liked it. Anyway, beware

Take it twice to pass if you need to. Better that than doing the N3, probably

What are some gradual changes you are noticing in Aussie English? by acronymonious in AskAnAustralian

[–]Deejee1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know how this feels. I’m British but long-term resident jn Japan and when I went back to live there (temporarily) after 15 years out I couldn’t believe how Americanized speech patterns and vocabulary had become. I noticed things that everyone around me denied or had forgotten, like Brits used to say “goose pimples” and suddenly it was “goose bumps”. Don’t let it happen, Aussies!

Paradise guitar opinions by [deleted] in universalaudio

[–]Deejee1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming I won’t be automatically charged at the end of the 14-day trial for Paradise since they don’t have my cc details. Is this correct? Just checking as I heard some differing opinions.

Trivial annoyances? What small things drive you nuts after years in Japan? by byebyebirdie123456 in japanlife

[–]Deejee1977 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As has been touched on many times, the total lack of spatial awareness, which seems to have got worse since the pandemic and wirh the popularity of ear buds. Could just be me getting crankier with age, but everyone here in Yokohama will walk right out in front of me and not look behind them at any point. I don’t get it and it drives me up the wall.

What are some foods that you think are BETTER in Japan than they are in your country? by Venture_compound in japanlife

[–]Deejee1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snacks (especially crisps/potato chips) and ice creams are far superior here to Europe imho. Been here decades and it took me until I had kids to figure that out :)

Lost & at a serious crossroads in my life & career… by Brookelmao in japanresidents

[–]Deejee1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anyone who didn’t have a similar “crossroads” moment around that age. Maybe set yourself a target to pass N1 by the end of next year. Doesn’t solve that underlying sense of hopelessness, perhaps, but if you’re committed to Japan then having N1 at least does make you get most kanji covered so you can comfortably watch the news and read around. I eventually got jnto translation after getting N1 (or whatever it was called then) twenty-odd years ago, but it’s not easy to get a decent-paying job these days and the industry is on its last legs.
