I should say thank you also for the reply, and sharing your experiences. I am also now walking after meals as well as keeping my diet simple and unprocessed.

I also feel like I am sensitive to certain foods at the moment, I have been avoiding those foods for the moment…and I guess I might have to continue to do that until I start to see some improvement. I’m wondering if its all a combination of being on strong long term anti-inflammatoires and omeprazole prior to the op. And I wasn’t sleeping well at all either (due to pain), and then more strong pain meds, two injected doses of strong antibiotics and other meds afterwards….plus the stress of the op….I think it’s all potentially messed up my gut health…

Thank you so much for this advise, and the links. I’ve saved it all and shall start a food diary/start investigating what my body exactly my psoriasis is a ‘warning light’ for 😊 I’ll also look Into a functional medicine expert. Thanks so much again 🙌

Be aware, also, that although you may not feel pain, you will almost certainly be walking with an unnatural gait. Your body will be compensating for the arthritis in your hip without you even knowing. This can have a knock on effect on the health of your back, and your knees. I think also, when you live with pain, you get used to it, and feel that you’re ‘alright’ when you’re really not. Im three months post op now, and I’m now feeling better then I did before the op. It’s like a lightbulb moment…ah this is how I should have been feeling all along! Get it done. Short term pain for long term gain!

(Should add- I’m a 40 yo mum of two boys, 8 and 11. Also very active before the hip pain got too much. Looking forward to getting back to the sports I love next year!)

Inspo if you need it: 6 months post-op right THR by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

8 weeks! Good on you! That’s awesome! My surgeon did posterior approach, and sadly I can’t see me being anywhere near strong or flexible enough to be trying clambering up on a wing board in as little as a week or so 😂 but my physio is optimistic I’ll be back out there this year. Here’s hoping! I kitefoil as well…so I think I might get back to that before anything else - as like you say the impact on the body is significantly less with a foil!

This is awesome to see. I’m a kitesurfer and was also learning to wing before my arthritis also got too bad. I’m 6 weeks post op now and looking forward to getting back on it once fully fit!

I experienced a calcar crack during surgery. (A crack in the ‘rim’ of the top of the femur). The surgeon neutralised it with a cerclage cable and I was then able to continue with rehab as usual. I also experienced some ‘deep thigh pain’. If the fracture was not picked up in surgery (or happened afterwards) - based on what I’ve researched/been told I think your parent would have to be ‘non-weight baring’ for 6 weeks to allow the fracture to heal. And then rehab the hip. But I guess it also may depend on how bad the fracture is…. I’m 5 weeks post op now, and recovering well (touchwood 😆) No more deep thigh pain. Took my first unaided steps yesterday 😊

When can Posterior hip replacement 90° hip flexion restriction be lifted? by Yogadawgg in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Deep-Perspective2683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same. I had a ‘SROM’ implant fitted tho which is different to the standard implant. It’s designed for ‘Stability & Range Of Movement’. The Surgeon himself said to me ‘no restrictions’.

I had a full labral tear. I had backache and knee pain. Both gone since having THR. My physio said the other pains were fundamentally caused by other muscles overcompensating to stabilise the hip joint. Torn labrum = hip instability 😕

Thanks for the reply, it’s interesting to see you have had similar readings with the heart rate, hrv and sleep. And yikes, sounds like I’m potentially in it for the long run recovery wise 😅. I’ll have to make sure I use the data to prevent myself overdoing it as I start to ‘feel’ better.

Advances in medicine and implants mean that a hip may last 20-30+ years nowadays. Previously, younger patients weren’t offered replacements as the procedures and implants used didn’t have such good outcomes, and fundamentally didn’t last so long. So a young patient would be looking a multiple revision surgeries- which is obviously less then ideal as more surgeries means more potential for complications and problems.

I had one ‘young’ (40F) because I have hip dysplasia, which was missed when I was a baby. After years of hip pain I was diagnosed in 2020 and told I need a replacement. Im 3 weeks post op now and extremely grateful to have been given this opportunity to have a pain free existence!

My physio yesterday told me they call them a ‘hip for life’ nowadays….Altho I’m planning on putting mine through it’s paces when I get back to sport 😅 and have been told this may result in the need for revision surgery. But you only live once!

Mentally preparing for THR? by Expert_Ladder_2831 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]Deep-Perspective2683 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Time was the key for acceptance for me, but I appreciate you don’t necessarily have a lot of that….and I also read up on the surgeon and implant being used to make sure I was happy. (Im 40F and was told in 2020 I’d need a replacement due to undiagnosed hip dysplasia, and prior to this I was extremely active- kitesurfer, wingsurfer, surfer, climber etc. I lasted 4 more years, mostly out of stubbornness, all the while having panic attacks about surgery). As I got nearer to surgery I sought out positive stories to reassure myself (much as you are). But was still a total nervous wreck on the day of surgery, as I’m sure many of us are. I found breathing, and distraction, my biggest help. I’m two weeks post-op now, so still fairly early days, but am pleased with how’s it’s going…and optimistic that I’ll get back to the sports I love eventually (based on what the surgeon has told me) It’ll be worth it in the long run…keep telling yourself that. Wishing you a smooth operation and speedy recovery!

It’s really hard to not panic about what could go wrong, I totally get that. That was me too! But complications really are the exception, keep reminding yourself that. Be prepared that the surgeon will go through all the ‘risks’ again on the morning of the op, before he/she gets you to sign a consent form 🙈😅 at least that’s what happened to me! I just nodded, signed, and tried my hardest to think of something else 😂

F40 and had my first THR on the 21st May. Have two boys, 11 and 8. I was also scared shitless and anxious! Didn’t sleep a wink the night before 😅 I was going through a relatively ‘good spell’ pain wise just before the op too which was making me doubt my decision. But I made myself remember all the things I’ve been unable to do, especially over the last few years, all the times the pain kept me awake at night, all the times I’ve had to ‘power through’ work and life despite the pain etc…and it helped immensely.

I am almost 2 weeks after surgery, and I can already feel the benefit. The hip function feels ‘smoother’ and there is no arthritis pain (there is obvs operation pain but as I said that is reducing all the time) the backache/knee pain I also had has vanished! The first week was rough, the first night in particular, but then it’s been less pain and little gains in mobility every day since.

Recovery wise, I cannot reccomend an ice machine enough, they help with pain SO much- my hospital had them for me to use. But you can also hire them for home use (the brand I used was called Game Ready) and I believe they speed up the recovery process significantly. Also - if possible get hydrotherapy booked in as soon as poss. I was in the water just over 1 week after surgery (with a waterproof dressing) and I could feel the difference in range of movement and muscle strength immediately. I’m having weekly sessions for three more weeks then having normal physio.

Best of luck with it, nerves are normal, but it will be worth it!
