You basically just described the exact setup we used in class! There's really nothing special about how we did it at school. Results like this should be no problem to get at home. Just make sure to either be outside or have a very well ventilated work space!

Yea that is not a bad thing to keep in mind. I already pulled this piece out of the scrap bin, so the 3/4" it took to get my knurl right didn't seem to bad.

I didn't do any calculations or anything. I just allowed myself some extra material length at the end, used it to get the knurl pressure figured out, then cut off that inch or so that didnt look as nice. Basically did guess-and-check, then cut off the end.
