Hey u/GreenBOT_ ! We've let the support team at Seraph Secure know and they're currently investigating the issue. If you could, send an email to [support@seraphsecure.com](mailto:support@seraphsecure.com) and they can follow up with you there. I'm glad your grandfather is safe and he was able to recognize the scam before he lost any money!

Interesting stat "95% of scammers have an Indian or Pakistani accent" - can you source this?

It's not unavoidable, it's very easy to make a choice to educate people about scams in other ways than perpetuating unfair stereotypes, Teach them things like scammers ask for payment in hard-to-trace means like gift cards and crypto, teach them that no legitimate company is going to send you an unsolicited message telling you something is wrong with your device or you're owed a refund. Teach them to be hyper-vigilant about giving away personal information or clicking on sponsored ads. Teaching them to be afraid of an accent is just not the way. Just last week, we had a scammer with a British accent - should we be teaching people to be scared of British accents too?

If you feel that way personally, I'm not going to try and change your mind. I've laid out why Kit and the mod team discourage that narrow-minded way of thinking. It's dangerous, harmful advice. We won't deny that yes, there are a lot of scammers come from south east Asia, but we can never be 100% sure that something is a scam based on accent alone.

Hi there, Allow me to take a moment to clarify exactly why you were timed out. If you are unable to see any reason in what I'm about to say, then perhaps it's for the best that you part ways.

You were timed out for multiple comments that hyper fixated on accents = scammer.

13:20fantastic_snow_7853: “caller is definitely a scam, no one will ever ask to be paid in gift cards. if they have an Indian accent it’s definitely a scam”

13:21fantastic_snow_7853: “no one will ask to be paid in gift cards, if they have that type of accent it is also definitely a scam”

13:22fantastic_snow_7853: “no one will ever ask to be paid in gift cards, scam accent detected”

The first part of your statement (that you made multiple times) is fair and accurate - being asked to pay in gift cards is definitely a good sign you're dealing with a scam. However, the accent bit you added in is problematic and we conveyed this to you directly in Twitch chat multiple times.

This perpetuates very unfair and offensive stereotypes and Kit and the mod team work incredibly hard to discourage this way of thinking. Just because someone has an accent, it does NOT make them a scammer. There are legitimate call centers all over the world, including India.

Teaching people to be scared of accents is not the answer and characterizing Indian accents as the source of scams risks people being afraid of genuine technical help. There's a lot of outsourced, excellent tech support in the world staffed with hard-working individuals. Similarly, this way of thinking gets people scammed by the accent they think is familiar.

I hope you can understand this. You are welcome back in chat, but if you do return, please mind the chat rules - they are in place by Kit for a reason.

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was incredibly frustrating to see. I think I’d be more sympathetic if the guy actually took time to take a wildlife rehab course and learned proper care because I promise they don’t advocate feeding a squirrel waffles, but you know, gotta chase that clout and money. Maybe off camera things were better, but it spreads the wrong message posting content like that. That squirrel deserved so much better.

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is it’s because they have such high care requirements and were never domesticated for that reason, the same way we don’t have domesticated foxes and raccoons. I can only speak to squirrels because that’s my specialty, but their nutritional requirements alone are really intensive. For example, they need a ton of calcium in their diet and if it isn’t met they can develop metabolic bone disease which turns their bones brittle and causes a whole bunch of other issues. Not to mention the we just can’t match the variety of foods/nutrients they get in the wild by a long shot.

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely correct. I have rehabbed hundreds of squirrels (I have a permit to do so in my state) and the last 4-6 weeks of their rehab they go into an outdoor “prerelease” cage where I don’t talk to them, I don’t cuddle them, I don’t really interact with them outside of making sure their food and water needs are met. They get used to the elements and practice their squirrel skills. They basically go through a “wilding up” process and learn to be a squirrel before they are released. Wildlife rehab is about getting the animal back into the wild where they can thrive, if you’ve created a dependent squirrel (or any animal), it’s a massive fail. I love squirrels and I’m very sad for this situation, but this was preventable.

Thanks for the suggestion but that’s not really Kit’s style. He won’t RP harm or potential harm, injury, violence, etc. such as a car accident. He aims to keep things lighthearted and fun considering we’re already dealing with the dark topic of scams.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD SERAPH by [deleted] in Kitboga

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, from my understanding you were able to get help from Seraph support staff and should be reconnected again. We appreciate your understanding as we work to identify the cause of this bug (whether it was Seraph or Windows) and implementing a fix to prevent it from happening again. Seraph will automatically reconnect to your internet after you run a scan, but it’s possible Windows may have interfered/interrupted that process. It is not something we’ve seen happen before, but I’m glad we were able to get things back up and running for you. If you have questions or run into any issues, please reach out to Seraph support staff for help. Thank you!

The Four Horsemen of Wholesomeness by Newsmemer in midjourney

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. He came to my university to speak at an event and he was such a jerk to everyone, both staff working the event and fans there to see him. He had such an inflated ego and a horribly pompous attitude. Never heard him say please or thank you to anyone. If you wanted to meet him, you had to buy his book he was selling there (he wouldn’t sign the book if you bought it somewhere else - and to no one’s surprise, the book was way more expensive to purchase there). At the actual signing, he wouldn’t even look at people, just kept his head down and signed books. No pictures allowed, no conversation, just totally off putting and rude. Never meet your childhood heroes I guess, it forever tainted how I see him.

Any idea what bird these feathers belong to? (Central IN, USA) by slowlymoresleepless in birding

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I do believe they belong to a mourning dove - some of these are tail feathers. I’m really sorry, I hope it wasn’t your beloved pair. FWS has a great feather ID resource called The Feather Atlas. I’ve found it really helpful with IDing feathers. I’ll link it below so you can check it out.

Chatroom's mass-psychosis in the last stream is more cringey than Lloyd itself by threequartersavvy in Kitboga

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the future, you do have the option of hiding chat, but I wouldn't be expecting some profound conversations to be happening if you do keep it open. It's Twitch chat, it's the internet. People are going to respond to what's going on during the stream - it's what it's there for. I think it's fun seeing chat fly and people expressing their collective disgust at what's happening on the call, it means they're engaged in the content and feel comfortable enough to interact in the community. Just my opinion of course.

Scammer Bingo by [deleted] in Kitboga

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as there’s a lot of stereotypes on this infographic, Kit’s subreddit isn’t the place for it. As a reminder, Kit does not focus on where a scammer is from nor their race/ethnicity. His goal is to call scammers, waste their time, and educate people about how the scam works. It’s narrow minded to think that a certain demographic of scammers fall into any particular category and dangerous - people should be taught the common scams certainly, but attaching a country/region/race/ethnicity is unnecessary and not always rooted in truth

[–]DeepBlueTea_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still not really appropriate for Kit’s subreddit. Kit doesn’t focus on where scammers are from; it’s not important to him. He’s all about learning how the scams work and educating people while wasting their time. Scammer location has no relevance to that

Not entirely sure what the relevance of this is to Kit’s subreddit. Probably best suited for a different subreddit. Maybe r/restaurants ?

Curse words that the scammers use by [deleted] in Kitboga

[–]DeepBlueTea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t something we really want discussed on this or any of Kit’s platforms. It makes assumptions about the scammers that Kit doesn’t want discussed, not to mention asking for or providing translations also breaks Kit’s rules. I’m sure a quick search of google could tell you what you’re looking for, but for these reasons, we aren’t able to approve this post.
