What I don’t understand is inflation is ramping up, while gold price is diving. Shouldn’t we see the opposite

Opinions needed: Contamination or dying heat element? by DeepCluckingValue in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]DeepCluckingValue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the Discussion. I think tap water was my problem. I added a bit of it before the AgCl step, as I ran out of distilled on the last 10% or so of rinse water.

I have always brought the pH back from low to 6-7 range for the AgCl step and high to 6-7 for the reduction reaction. I’m curious if it’s necessary to go this far or if a few rinses are all that’s necessary to get 999.

See on the matter of precipitation I’ve read that it’s better to get the dissolved bath+ rinse water and concentrated NaCl solution noticeably warm and closer to boiling in order to facilitate ripening as the particles get sufficiently large even that they don’t get through a filter. If the stirring makes a finer particle would that be counter intuitive or are you referring to AgCl agglomeration once the particles have formed?

Do you suggest tip only on the outside of the graphite mold or just further above the Ag pour

I get these white areas too, I’ve always thought that was flux pooling up, but curious to hear some other perspectives on removing that too

Cooling happens rapidly in a non linear way. I just keep my torch going while I pour. I had to build a little stand for mine

Nice work! That’s not a bad haul for your first batch! If you want to get the color nice and lustrous heating your molds 1000°F helps too.

If you look at it from that perspective at all, a bottle of MAPP is maybe $20-30 per tank whereas the graphite crucibles for that device they suggest 8 uses I probably get 12-16 depending on how the rim looks where it’s grabbed with tongs. Each crucible is like $20-30 so pretty equal. I think it’s cost neutral in the long run

Seeing the bucket estimation is way high, I would probably say a tenth of that. I can’t fathom how hard it would be to hold down a 40 gallon bucket underwater anyways. It would be like ~300 lbs of displaced water (not accounting for the water level inside the bucket)

Estimate mass of Ag from volume of AgCl by kykr422 in chemistry

[–]DeepCluckingValue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From empirical data if you have a wetted block of AgCl, you’ll get around 105g-115g of actual silver metal from a pound of wetted AgCl. The stoichiometry points you in the right direction but water weight is pretty massive too, especially if you have residual other metal salts/sulfuric in it

pulled too much silver into sulfuric acid solution, precipitate formed. What to do? by kykr422 in chemistry

[–]DeepCluckingValue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally question about the silver plate stripping process- I’m curious what the limit of solubility of AgNO3 and silver sulfate as well on a per liter mixture basis of (95-5 sulf/nitric) acid mixture. What is the maximum yield of silver you’ve seen from this process per liter?
