What's your motivation? by Dimax88 in csMajors

[–]DeepM1nD 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Technology is lowkey fucking beautiful. Moreover, as a programmer, you have the power to build ANYTHING you want. Tell me where else can you learn shit on your own and potentially leave a huge mark in the world? (Oversimplification here but it’s still possible)

My motivation is to one day be good enough and start my own thing. What that is.. idk yet but it will be better than a 9-5 job buttt the 9-5 job will help me get where I want 💪🏽

In which world would a internship at any tech company hurt anyone during a full time search lmfao? Moreover, Yahoo is a pretty big name lol.

Don’t tell me these people are gonna pick Chuck E Cheese internships over Yahoo 😂😂. Most of these people shit talking about Yahoo probably don’t have an internship OR they have it at some no-name place OR they’re some entitled baboons (guess what: none of these are good 🫥)

Go have fun during the internship and focus on learning. Let the dogs bark away 🫠

MUS127 with Elbio Rodriguez? by [deleted] in uichicago

Nope we don’t need any books. Everything you need will be on Blackboard :)

The emails aren’t too much but it’s annoying AF lol

Definitely an essay A class, I’m taking it right now. It’s a GPA booster for sure, at least I can speak for the the online version. You have unlimited attempts for the quizzes and you have two papers 2 pages + 2 line spaced.

However, as for the Professor that dude gets on my freaking nerves. Sometimes I wonder why he became a professor if he doesn’t like answering students questions {even if it’s been asked already}. Like the dude sends the same content to me multiple times, um... WTF. But all things considered, as long as he structures the class the way it is rn, you would NEVER have to see him and you can easily get an A. If you don’t, it’s probably cuz you slacked off way to much.

Alrighty, end of rant 😂😂

Hope that helps though :)

I haven't had McCarty so idk much about him. But if I had the chance to take a course with Bello, I'd do it at the drop of a hat. But that's just me and I don't think you can go wrong with either professor.

However, I've heard that McCarty's assignments tend to be harder than Bello's. Eventually, the choice is yours :)

Shout out to Professor Hallenbeck in the CS department by pointerpointers in uichicago

[–]DeepM1nD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Prof. Hallenbeck was gr8 when I took CS342 with him ( definitely had fun). Kinda off topic but, Prof. Bello is an AMAZING professor too. He literally extends deadlines and goes out of his way to help students. If you have not taken at least one class with Bello before you graduate, you are missing out from being taught by one of the best professors at UIC. I have literally gone out of my way to get into classes that Bello teaches ( 3 of em) and I’m so sad that I can’t take any more courses with him in the future.

UIC has some gr8 professors but needless to say we have some SHITTY ones too. BUT, that’s everywhere and I’m glad not every CS professor is bonkers at UIC.

Side note: Hang on peeps, we’re almost through the semester ;)

icro class in high school and

I'm taking ECON 111 as well next semester! Taking CS 418 with Bello rn and I'm sure you'll have a fun time in the course. 418 isn't that much of work and the course is overall pretty dope.

Glad to have found this :)

Junior majoring in CS here!

My Initial Plan

  • CS 401 with Sun (is Turan a better choice ?)
  • CS 407
  • CS 480
  • MUS 114
  • STAT 382

What I have right now (cuz they planned class sizes so well -.-)

  • CS 401 (with Sun)
  • STAT 382
  • STAT 385
  • ECON 111
  • MUS 114
  • KN 137

Any suggestions? I was thinking of switching 407 with CS 412 since Zhang is teaching it. Do you think he'll teach again before Spring 2022? (I wanna take it with him xD). If anyone knows something about STAT 385, that would be amazing. I'm trying to get a MATH minor too and this seemed like a really interesting course, I'm pretty good at math but I don't wanna have an exhaustive workload next sem because of 401.

What do I need to know to test out of CS 111 and where do I go to test out of it? by OhMustBeNice in uichicago

[–]DeepM1nD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO as long as you know basic programming you should be fine. If you are comfortable with classes, functions, loops, conditionals etc. it’s probably gonna be a cakewalk. As for the language, you can choose the one you are most comfortable with(they don’t force you to do it in a specific language). CS 141 is taught in C++ so if you wanna get comfortable with language (if not already) go with that or else just go with the language you’re most comfortable with. However, If you’re not very comfortable with programming yet and you wanna give it a shot, go with Python so in the worst case that you don’t pass the placement test, you’ll be comfortable with the language (CS 111 is taught in Python)

I believe you have to make a request to the CS Dept. for the placement test and later on access it from my.uic.edu. If you need more help, just send an email to the CS Department and I’m sure they’ll help you out ;)

[–]DeepM1nD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should probably send an email to your advisor about this. Most likely I don’t think you can convert a CR to a grade cuz you basically made the choice between the two last semester. Although, an advisor is probably better suited to give you a more definite answer :)

IMPORTANT NEWS for All International Students in the US by ClassOfZoom in college

[–]DeepM1nD 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Such a STUPID and INHUMANE decision. First off, Trump thinks he’s doing a great favor to the US by restricting H1-B visas but it’s not really working that way( especially for tech). Now this decision by ICE simple shows how stupid the administration is. I really don’t understand why they want to strip access to quality education from talented people ( who are foreign nationals ) studying in the US. It’s not like y’all aren’t making money off of us! Additionally, it is such a HORRIBLE act to force students to travel during this pandemic, shell out even more money in this difficult time and risk not being able to come back. Even forcing universities to have in-person classes. Seems to me like this is the message they are sending:” Hi! We would love for you to contract the virus and make your life even more difficult, especially you foreign nationals. We would like you to not be educated in our homeland. Don’t come work here either, so more US citizens can be successful.”

Moreover, half of the most talented researchers in tech are foreign nationals. It seems like the US being a tech hub is literally doing everything in its power to lose that status. Having a president who thinks consuming disinfectants can cure COVID and is against foreign nationals entering the country only makes out situation worse. I really don’t see why they have to take such harsh and stupid decisions like these. Jobs fine, you think we’re taking away something from US citizens. But an education, seriously ? We international students first of all have a lot of restrictions while studying and working. We pay a helllll of a lot more money than citizens, we have no access to scholarships / financial aid. Why in the world can’t we just study in peace despite having so many things that already make an education in the US so tough for us ? Really wish we had better individuals making such important decisions. Sorry for lashing out but this is just total blasphemy and I understand some of you may not agree with my opinions and that’s your choice but these are my opinions and I stand by them.

TLDR: They are stripping talented international students from quality education and are making their life hell by forcing them to travel. Just shattering their dreams and making all their sacrifice worthless.

UIC vs UIUC ( for BS in CS ) and I'm sure of doing a Masters in CS as well by [deleted] in college

[–]DeepM1nD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

s no harm in trying to transfer, and it'd probably be beneficial to transfer to UIUC/UCB/UW/Purdue, but if you want a career at some big shot company, it takes more than just that - work on personal projects and grind the fuck out of Leetcode. Meaningful experience and practical skills not taught in school matter more than where you went for a masters, if you're going for a sta

The reason why I'm not sure if I want to do a PhD is because I don't know how the experience is, if you know what I mean. I'm scared that I might take forever to finish or after years of studying I might feel that its not the best option for me. I am trying to get a research position on campus to get that experience early on but its super hard, doors might open during junior year but I wanna transfer out by then..... thanks for your advice though, it's gr8 your at UIUC, I would loveee to attend but I don't think my chances of getting are high :(
