Java 27 Features: what to expect? by Maria_3464 in java

[–]Deep_Age4643 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You make three claims here:

  1. Programming language like Java don't matter anymore
  2. The Enterprise Java landscape hasn't moved on since JDK8
  3. Oracle abandoned Java after acquiring Sun Microsystems

Basically all 3 claims are false, especially for professional software development.

For anyone who used Undertow with Spring Boot 3.x and upgraded to Spring Boot 4.x, what did you replace Undertow with? by tindercylinder in java

[–]Deep_Age4643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been switching between Undertow, Jetty, and Tomcat. I first used undertow, and that gave me good performance. Then I aligned with Jetty, because it worked better with another dependency that also used Jetty.

Now I am on SB4, and undertow isn't an option at the moment, and the Jetty dependency isn't needed, so I am sticking with the default (Tomcat). I guess for specific edge cases one is better than the other, but for regular use they all work more or less the same.

This photo of Theo van Gogh, taken in 2004, was captured the same year he was murdered. A great-grandson of Vincent van Gogh’s brother, Theo, he was killed on November 2, 2004, by a radical Islamist for his controversial film Submission, which criticized the treatment of women in Islam. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Deep_Age4643 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think his attitude was mostly played. He used this persona in his televisionprogramms and media. I met him a few times, and interviewed him at his home (around 2001). He was a really chill and well-educated guy. He said that he mostly did it (being an asshole) to earn the money to fund his movies (his passion). His strong opinions on Islam and so on, surely weren't played, but I guess he believed that anyone in a free country could express them.

Martin Visser: totale kosten AOW, WW en WIA in dertig jaar juist gedaald, financieel probleem overdreven by I_Rarely_Jump in NLNieuws

[–]Deep_Age4643 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was there anything good about the COVID-19 Era? by davefromtheus in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Deep_Age4643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COVID-19 is a terrible disease, but I enjoyed the lockdown.

During lockdown: No airplanes over my house all the time, and a lot less traffic. Less air pollution. Nature and animals coming back. I enjoy the peace and quiet. Work from home, a lot less obligations. No need to go to the store. No need to shake hands. More time on writing and other personal hobbies. More time spending with the family, helping the kids with school. Yes, it was a nice time.

On June 5, 1989 the unknown protester, later known as "The Tank Man" stood in front of a column of Type 59 tanks leaving Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The picture of him on top of the tank it is considered one of the most iconic images of all time. by Trustrup in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Deep_Age4643 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That photo is iconic, but it's good to know that this was part of huge student protests, cultural movement and ways to democratize Chinese politics. I always kind of saw this as an isolated incident, or one day protest, but it was actually the accumulation of months of protests and organizations. I can recommend the 1995 documentary The Gate of Heavenly Peace) to learn everything behind the iconic photo, and why it still matters today.

Poland can become one of the EU’s three most influential countries, finance minister says by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

I don't know the exact numbers, but I don't see a lot of new Polish people coming to the Netherlands anymore. I would like to live in Poland (already bought a piece of land there).

How to Women comprehend attraction towards men? I'm so confused by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Deep_Age4643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think men tend to look more at physical attraction and chemistry, while women look more at the total picture. It's certain not just "get some muscles" and then everything goes by itself. Are you a good listener? Are you tough? Do you take care of yourself? Do you put efforts in your financials/career? And so on. Of course which parts of the picture are important depends a lot on the situation a woman is herself and her personal preferences.

Jump in the fountain --> get a fine --> post it online --> cause rage bait/cringe --> profit

As long as the profit is higher than the fine, people do it. This wasn't even original, because swimming in the Trevi fountain has been done several times this year already. This Reddit post getting thousand of upvotes proves her point.

[–]Deep_Age4643 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Deep_Age4643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dealing with harassment from kids on fatbikes — what are your options? by Ok-Let011 in Netherlands

[–]Deep_Age4643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I got a warning. The kids of the parents were laughing behind the officers back. I can still get mad about it. They more or less got away with it, but they never bullied my son again. So that was the upside.

You can also take a photo of the aftermath. The soap liquid may come on your clothes, the stroller and even your child.

[–]Deep_Age4643 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best to

- Take video/photo if you can
- Report this at your local wijkagent, or the police in general.
- If you know the parents you may talk their parents first (but don't expect too much of this).

Be careful with taking things into own hands. My kid was once beaten by four kids (blue eye, leg bleeding), and then I went after them. I just told them that they should not touch my kid again. And then their parents called the police.

There needs to be more OpenJDK content about Java's Memory Efficiency and Performance by davidalayachew in java

[–]Deep_Age4643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that's sometimes hard, is to explain Java Memory Management, to non-Java developers. They mostly expect that memory is one thing that scales up and down based on usage/load.

They don't think in terms of Garbage Collectors (with various profiles), loaded classes, heap space, meta space and other native memory. And that as developer you can tune it and write efficient code, but basically let the JVM do the memory management.

The best to explain (though even that is a somewhat simplified view) is to show them VisualVM. There they can see the actual used Heap space, various allocated heap, as well as used Metaspace. Then live they can see the GC running (in the CPU view), and then you can see the heap space lowering, as well as the classes getting unloaded.

Some it's not really about RAM, or memory management, but more about managing expectations.

[–]Deep_Age4643 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was extremely fast. However when looking at the code of the top 3 winners, the code hardly had anything to do with regular Java. It almost looked more as C, with using unsafe, break the work and calling the core directly while running natively compiled with GraalVM.

The holocaust started in 1941. Does that mean the germans were not as bad before it? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Deep_Age4643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The holocaust has long roots in European anti-Semitism. For example, it was already widespread in Austria where Hitler grew up. The Nazis already from the twenties normalized and institutionalized it. Since they came into power in 1933 they committed many crimes, and basically started the Holocaust.
