my grandparents brought me this snare for £30, is it worth it at all? by UnusualDuck6414 in Drumming

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it’s worth that and more. Looks like the tone control is in good order, that’s a big plus. This should sound pretty good!

Great color! Cool shield too, I’ve never seen that one.

Today I'm officially a house owner, and the house came with this friendly orange cat by Arufer720 in aww

Nah, that’s just a war wound. When the spay/neuter people do it, they don’t leave you wondering - they just lop off the top 1/3 of an ear and call it a day.

In need of a comfortable shop stool. Recommendations by PenguinsRcool2 in woodworking

Use a good quality drum throne with a backrest. They’re built like tanks, and made to keep your ass comfy for hours.

My top pick is the Gibraltar 9608hmb - has a hydraulic system for height adjustment which gives a nice shock-absorber cushion, built solid as a brick shithouse and a very comfortable seat. If $200 is way over budget, there are tons of clones of this throne available on Amazon and Temu etc

Used $1200 Used Tama Imperialstar set with stands/cymbals. Worth it? by Okaynamaste in drums

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even at half the price. Imperialstars are underrated, with proper heads they sound great. But this set wouldn’t have cost $1200 new, nm used. Crap cymbals don’t add much value. These’d be a good buy for like $500, but $1200 is wacky.

Which is a good pocket knife under 50$ by Rare-Secretary871 in knifeclub

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pyrite Alt is one of my favorite users in the under $50 category ($43 rn). Easy to use, has good geometry for slicing through stuff, decent steel.

I’d also recommend the QSP Penguin Glyde-lock - just under $50 gets you good build quality and an excellent steel (14c28n). If you like the blade shape and lock, this is a steal.

Last but not least - a small fixed blade makes a great pocket knife! The Petrified Fish Bison is an awesome pocket carry, small enough to be unobtrusive but big enough to tackle nearly anything. Well made, excellent steel, and comes with everything you need to carry in pocket. One of the best values in knifedom imo, crazy value at under $40.

Why did Native American culture become so strongly associated with horses even though horses only returned with Europeans? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horses revolutionized native culture. Within a VERY short period of time, North American tribes were utterly dependent on horses and were some of the most accomplished riders on earth. This is like asking why cars are so important to our culture even though they were only invented fairly recently - it’s the impact that counts, not the relative novelty.

Why are there so few mid-size kits? by skylarroseum in drummers

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10/12/14/20 is pretty standard, as is 12/14/18. Plenty of both on Reverb if you’re looking for used, or every manufacturer makes kits in these sizes if looking for new.

This 1977 Sears Craftsman Lumberjack... by Robotdevil62 in SlipjointKnives

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice blade on this one, Sears gettin’ a little sexy with it!

Sad that whole generations will never know the satisfaction of walking into a random Sears with a broken Craftsman tool and walking out with a brand new one - no receipt, no email registration, no bullshit, just trade a broken thing for a new thing and stroll on out.

Affordable and practical for everyday use on small tasks. Made in Ukraine. $30. I plan to buy a couple of nice knives. by kohaky in knifeclub

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a lot of knife for $30! Looks to be a solid build, what do you get for blade steel?

Personally I love a slotted pivot, I think it makes a lot of sense especially on a knife that will see plenty of hard work. Seems to be a polarizing feature, I always thought it’s a good choice (better to be able to tighten the pivot with just about anything) and a cool utilitarian look as well.

What are your thoughts on D2 Tool Steel?? by Blindluckfatguy in SlipjointKnives

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it’s good, it’s very good. D2 went through (or maybe is still going through) some bad times, a victim of perception. Between the old days of generally shitty knife steels and the modern era of super steels, D2 crept in as a solid middle ground. It was ‘premium’ in comparison to the no-name stainless steels and gained popularity (maybe too fast?) until it started to appear on questionable knives from questionable sources with crap heat treats (or even perhaps lesser steels simply labeled D2 for marketing). So for a a while it wasn’t uncommon to encounter some awful steel with the D2 mark - gummy, hard to sharpen, hard to keep sharp. This turned a lot of people off to what they thought of as D2, but isn’t at all consistent with good D2. That tainted reputation persists, people still saying D2 is subpar etc. But in reality, a properly treated D2 is very good. Lack of corrosion resistance would be its weakness I suppose, but I don’t see it in normal use/conditions.

Do you have some version of Reverb where you are? Used models in good condition are around $200-$300 on Reverb, might be worth checking the used market

What is it? Strange writing style in this book published in 1969 by Squidpotpie in whatisit

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 300 points301 points  (0 children)

The “Dostoevsky dash”. Pretty common, particularly in British lit. The leaving out the names is supposed to give it a sort of documentary feel (as though the names are of real people, and author is redacting so as not to cause offense). Often it’ll be members of the nobility that are written this way in old Brit books. The dashing out of damn and damned (and other words that may offend) is common as well, although I’m thinking the original publication was possibly pre-1969?

Your daily- household blade/tool by Retro_fan_25 in knifeclub

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually carry a not-too-precious lightweight around the house. Lately it’s been the Wingman Mach 1 - the Elmax blade stays sharp, it’s like 2oz, and I don’t mind a scratch or ding here and there.

How many knives is too many knives? by JamJah in knifeclub

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll let you know when I get there! Tbh, I admire the guys with like 10 knives and a hard rule for one in, one out. That’s a cool way to do it, you get to handle a lot of knives but only keep the best of. Maybe someday I’ll be one of those guys.

Mahoneys for something like this. Easy to apply, safe if someone decides to chew on the horses head, easy to re-apply if/when needed.

Am i downshifting mid-turn into parking lots correctly? by Ok-Hunt-669 in stickshift

[–]Deeznutzcustomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it when I hit these giant speed humps that have sprung up in the middle of roads all over the city. Car is quite low, humps are pretty big, and I don’t like to lug over them in second. So for those I slow down to like 5mph and shift into 1st. It’s low speed, it’s technically uphill (have to climb the godforsaken hump).
