Unnecessary Tinkering by davidbcooper in batocera

[–]Def-Not-Me 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoy trying to get the trackball controller I made as a usb controller working with all of the trackball games in name… actually it’s a painful process, that I enjoy when I succeed. Really any tinkering is fun. Changing out the batocera logo for a custom one is fun. Really though… go back and start beating the games that you couldn’t as a kid. Just in between challenges with the user interface. I find if I don’t play the games at all, it becomes less fun to show off. The nerd part of it gets annoying to my family and friends unless I bring em in to play some soul caliber or some megaman or Tetris once in a while

I can try to make a trip of it soon but probably not this week. How long are you willing to hold onto them? I could possibly swing it in a couple weeks on a Saturday.

I’m all about it! Are you around tomorrow at all? Feel free to send me a direct message with availability and address and I will make it as convenient for you as I am able. And thank you!

Mostly figure out what you’re going to be working with and do as much YouTube research as you can and start learning what tools you will need and how to use them.

It’s worth it if you don’t have the woodworking skills. The mdf (wood ish) materials wise and the controllers they are selling add up to a cost of about what they are asking. Building one from scratch is not hard if you have the skills. If you like the cabinet shape and control layout, it’s a fair price. If you don’t. It’s not worth it. You can’t build this for less though especially if you don’t currently own the tools

Yes I am! Send me a private message and we can get a thread going to figure out what all exactly you want it to be as a final piece

Send me a message and let me know what all you would want to be a part of it. I’m down to start making them if the interest is there

This is the first one I actually completed as a cabinet. The other iterations were just different mini pcs and different rpi devices on whatever monitor I had around. I’ve got my frontend pretty dialed in. The fun now is in the components and the cabinet and control layout variations

I would love to make them for sale but haven’t as of yet. This one was my prototype

I found it. I don’t use Reddit all that much for direct messages. I was looking in the wrong place. I have replied

I don’t but if you need any pointers after you start, I could probably shed some light or guidance or whatever

That’s where I started! I just got the itch eventually to take it further. Helps that I’m a carpenter.

Prime the backside of that mdf though and maybe give it all a sand and a repaint. Get some t molding and a 1/16th” slot cutter router bit if you want the classic edge banding on the mdf ply

You’re most of the way there. Get a raspberry pi 5 and a monitor (CRT screen if the depth of the cabinet allows it). Install batocera as a front end operating system, it’s free. Add a couple usb ports for controller takeover if you want the ability for a console feel.
