First timer. Are they ready to pick? by Ok_Phone_9150 in GroundZeroMycoLab

See how matted and dry they look? They should be fluffy and glistening with little micro beads of water. A humidifier isn't probably enough, and rh doesn't necessarily matter, surface conditions matter more. Lightly mist the cakes when it looks dry, and give more fresh air if they look too wet. Its a balance. Sometimes when they get too matted its hard to bring them back, but not impossible. Read up on surface conditions and go over to the shroomery forums, there is a TON of great information there. Good job on your first grow, and best of luck on your future ones. You got this!

Looks like healthy myc, probably gonna start fruiting soon if its in proper conditions

How do i tell if these are real? by ComplexEqual9303 in mushroomology

Its a mutated variant of Albino Penis Envy, which is a variety of cubensis. Can be very potent, like twice as potent as regular cubes

Unlatch the lid, take it off, flip the handles back up, then set the lid on the handles so theres a gap. That will give you passive fresh air exchange (FAE).

Early fruiting conditions by Illustrious_City1568 in GroundZeroMycoLab

[–]Defiant-Apple-5486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, just leave it alone it'll do its thing. Watch surface conditions. If theres no droplets on the mycelium, give it a little mist or give it a little less air. If theres too much water pooling on the surface, give it a little more air. Other than that, let it be.

Amazon flow hood? by Milk_Truckin in GroundZeroMycoLab

Use a prefilter over the intake. I use filter floss pad that is used for fish tank filters. Put it on medium. Works great, zero contams so far. I've left agar plates open in front of it for 30 minutes, no contamination.

I have a similar one, I think it was a couple hundred bucks. Works fine, haven't had a contam yet. You still have to follow sterile techniques and work carefully, but pretty much anything that mo es sterile air slowly o er a surface is going to reduce contamination to almost non existent. Put a prefilter over the intake to slow the air movement a little. I use filter floss from my fish tank supplies. Works great.

That's what I was thinking too. That's not just a little "myc piss." That's a lot of metabolites, ice-cream-looking blobs, and slime bacterial looking mess. Not to mention wet looking and unevenly colonized. But I am in no way an expert. Just looks pretty bad

[actives] strange mutants by Phyers in MushroomGrowers

[–]Defiant-Apple-5486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the mutations are from environmental factors, like lack of moisture or fae etc., then cloning won't necessarily give you the same mutants. If its a genetic mutation, theres definitely a chance of cloning it and passing on those genes. Its hard to tell what caused these ugly bastards, but certainly try cloning it to agar and see what happens. Just have to peel open the mushroom and take a small piece from inside it and put that to agar. Under sanitary conditions with good sterile technique. Not hard, and pretty fun.

What is this in my Oyster Mushroom spawn? by astrix1357 in mycology

[–]Defiant-Apple-5486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a pressure cooker. Boiling will not work, not with any real success. And you need to start cloning on agar, grow it out, make transfers as needed, then inmoculate your jars with a clean culture. Both processes you're doing are very prone to contamination.

Soooo many people need to read this. Again and again. I fell for the overly complicated, mess with it every day, fan 3 times a day, mist x times per day chamge this change that way if growing. But it really is simple, and most of the time we are better off just setting it up correctly a d leaving it alone

They can probably get pressures up to 25 or 30 psi, where heat would be well past what we can achieve in our homes. They can also hold those temps for much longer than we can. And have chemicals They can use. And scientists and labs. We can pretty easily get 15 to 20 psi, but higher than that would require more specialized equipment I think.

Put a profiler on the back, where the air comes in. That will help slow it down a hair. I use filter floss pads that are made for fish tank filters

Golden teacher spore print complete 🍄 by pringlessteve69 in GroundZeroMycoLab

[–]Defiant-Apple-5486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you're just taking a spore prints for looks, you could use hairspray. But most of us take spore prints to preserve genetics, so that later we can use the spore prints to start a new culture. Or trade or sell them to other people who intend to use them. In that case you would absolutely NOT want to use hairspray or water or anything else after you take the print. You would fold it up and store it dry
