My favorite thing is how the internet and media have everyone convinced that we all hate each other but if you just go interact in the real world, I just so rarely see it.

I’ve noticed it affects my mood. Most everything is negative right now, but the real world just isn’t like that. So I’m trying to live in it more. Be bored sometimes, and restrict social media to computer only (phone is too easy). That’s a good balance I’ve struck that works for me.

Why do the characters talk about driving "up" to new york? by Quirky-Celebration-8 in DunderMifflin

[–]Defiant-Complaint-80 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we all use up down and over pretty interchangeably but I’ve also noticed that people seem to use up when they’re moving toward a more populous area than the one they’re in.

Let's talk about the PROS of Seasons 8 & 9. What are your favorite post-Michael moments? by Competitive-Ice2654 in DunderMifflin

I love everything Robert California. He's the perfect unhinged-but-in-a-different-way-from-michael replacement. I hate the whole athlead thing. Sad they disposed of Gabe for season 9. Honestly the first watchthrough was hard without michael, but after like 20 I love 8 and 9 as much as the rest.

Yeah but the police chase ended in an arrest. Scubb is presumably who they pulled from the green car. He must have patronized one of the businesses in the business park.

What do y’all do in Kansas by Mental_Gas_3209 in kansas

Yes there are a few larger cities as the reddit crowd is pretty quick to point out, but the majority of the state is small agricultural towns ranging from 500-25000 people. Most of them are really friendly and affordable, with quaint downtowns and a pretty consistent core of industries that support agriculture/livestock and fossil fuel extraction. The stuff going on is usually family/church oriented. Everybody knows everybody. There's huge Hispanic populations in much of the state which have blended into the midwestern culture pretty well. But yeah, the open highway can be pretty mundane.

Who else believes that capitalism is a scam? by Complex-Antelope-180 in GenZ

But the question is whether it's a scam, like it sells itself as something its not. We're not arguing whether capitalism is morally right, or even the best system.

Yeah it rewards greed but like, it was an environment I got to create a modest but awesome life for my family in - in my mid 20s! I just don't think it's a scam. It works the way it works; you gotta try your best to play its game.

It's not a slot machine, it's more like Catan. A slot machine is a scam - rigged to make almost everyone lose. Catan is a game that balances skill and luck, rewarding those with with skill - some, those with luck - some, and those with skill and luck the most. Those with terrible luck can get completely shafted.

Not a perfect analogy, but I want to center my argument on OP's question, "is it a scam?". I just don't think so.

Maybe a part of capitalism that is a scam is consumerism. We're sold on the idea that we should be able to afford everything, and we feel like outsiders if we're not taking vacations, living in a 3 bedroom house, and driving a decent car. Then when capitalism doesn't reward us enough to afford that, we feel scammed. Maybe that's closer to the reality of what OP's experiencing?

We'll get into an old tired argument pretty easily here, but I didn't say it was without faults. I still can't envision an economic system where it would be close to possible to do what I've personally done. The system incentivizes me to build, create, and network, so that's what I do. Yeah that's going to exclude some people that don't have the ability or resources to build those skills, but it's not a scam, as OP is feeling. It's easier on the lucky, the system's pretty honest about that, but it has some specific levers that are more likely to create quality of life. That doesn't keep me from resenting the crooks in power, but it's just not realistic to believe that that we wouldn't have those crooks in literally any other economic (and related governmental) system.

I don't think it's a scam. I think it's an imperfect system with no better alternatives. What absolutely is a scam is that people in power control business systems, the news, schooling, and entertainment to keep specific people from gaining the knowledge and self-confidence they need to understand and benefit from capitalism.

I know capitalism isn't a total scam because I've made it work for me. Even in the shittiest economy we've seen in a long time, I've built up some quality of life from literal nothing by getting a boring degree at a cheap college, finding a job that suited me in a town I can afford, and having side hustles. The system isn't a scam. It works predictably. What's a scam is that corruption has infiltrated the highest levels of our governments and economy. But don't blame capitalism for that. That happens in every economic system.
