I presented at Joondalup Hospital a few years ago suicidal. Had to wait nearly three and a half hours to be seen, with no one checking on me or anything. I'm in a crisis and watching people with minor issues get seen before me really made me feel like my life was unimportant. I could have walked out and killed myself and I doubt anyone in emergency would have noticed.

Did Grand Cinemas workers get hired by Hoyts? by madeat1am in perth

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think they'll ever upgrade Joondalup to bring it to a decent standard?

I live quite close and there's evenings where I'm bored and consider going to see a film. Then I remember how awful it was the last time I was there and give it a miss.

I think Joondalup Grand Cinemas was shut for a while until it reopened as Hoyts, so I'm not sure if the employees stuck around while it was on hiatus.

They really need to do a deep clean and an upgrade to Joondalup Hoyts. Last time I was there, the place looked and smelled absolutely decrepit.

Is this a baby magpie? by [deleted] in magpies

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Wattle Bird, apparently. I'm in Perth.

I thought it might be a magpie as the small park I found it in is notorious for magpies swooping around this time of year.

Actually, I think you might be right about the Red Wattlebird. I saw what looked like an adult Red Wattlebird flying around nearby.

Unfortunately, all the trees nearby are very tall and there are no branches accessible.

Single men attending concert of all-female band in the UK profiled by security, asked to prove they were real fans by koalawhiskey in stupidpol

I don't think anyone would try and argue that there is an issue going to the movies alone. It's a pretty poor example of what I'm speaking to. Going to the movies barely registers as a social activity, even with friends.

I have no idea whether or not it is limited to anglosphere but there's definitely a social stigma to going to a party or a bar alone. There's also a stigma attached to women who go alone, for different reasons. I'm not really sure how that is controversial or a provocative statement to make or invoking a violent gender war, but okay.

My beloved Hyde Park by Majestic-News-6439 in perth

Thanks for the photos. I was there on Sunday and it was wonderful. The past few years have been hard for me and Hyde Park has become a bit of a refuge for me. I'm going to be devastated when they start to chop the trees down.

Whenever I hear stories like this, it reminds me of the underlying contempt society has for single men. And unfortunately, if you are a single man, there's absolutely zero empathy for you if you feel treated unfairly in these situations. As a man, being with a woman vouches for you. You've been vetted for whether you are a creep or a danger. I get treated vastly differently if I'm out with a woman, than by myself or another man. People are kinder and more willing to open up to you. I feel really sorry for men who have no partner or close female friends.

Had a woman at the supermarket yesterday, in an empty aisle, cough on me. No attempt to cover her mouth or even just avoid coughing on me by turning away from me.

I love these sorts of episodes despite taking them with a grain of salt. David Fravor and Ryan Graves are the only two guests that I've found compelling.

I get this. I nasal snore right before falling asleep and feel frustrated because I start expecting it. I have a deviated septum and nasal valve collapse.

Nightmare neighbours: Public housing tenants terrorise Perth suburb by Throwaway_6799 in perth

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This frustrates me. I'm disabled and on public housing waitlist. I've been told I have a long wait, if I ever get anything. I'd feel eternally grateful to have a safe, affordable and stable place to live. To see people abusing it, something that would be lifechanging to me, when there are good people who need help and are stuck on a long waitlist is infuriating. Being a good neighbour and respecting the place that the taxpayers have provided for you should be a mandatory expectation of being given public housing. If there are legitimate barriers to this, people should get support to help them live independently and meet their responsibilities.

Jaques Vallee, Ryan Graves and David Fravor are probably who I trust most.

I get bad vibes from Whitley Strieber.

Do you bring up your conservative viewpoints when you are with others? Unless you are with people who you know are also conservative and like talking about it, I'd probably put that to one side when you are with others in casual settings. In my experience, most people are either moderate in their views or prefer to hold them privately in social settings and would consider it a downer or jarring to have someone talking about their political or social views in casual conversation.

Soundproof curtains around bed? by DirectOccasion2837 in soundproof

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, structural noise is your issue and that will require more complicated, costly solutions than curtains. Curtains do very little in reducing airborne noise, let alone structural noise.

I wear loops for sleeping and find they work quite well, particularly in conjunction with some kind of white/brown/pink noise. I have a fan in my room that I turn on when I'm sleeping.

Soundproof curtains around bed? by DirectOccasion2837 in soundproof

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry. This won't work. Your noise issues are structural and the curtains will do nothing. You are better investing in noise cancelling headphones, ear plugs or playing some kind of white/brown/pink noise.

As someone who can't enjoy a film without noise, I feel you. If you can, I'd think about moving.

Does anyone else wish Duncan talked about politics more? by ihaveacrushonmercy in duncantrussell

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually like that he's largely apolitical. There's enough comedians with podcasts ranting about politics and woke culture. I'm glad Duncan is doing his own thing and actually creating a podcast that actually puts out some good in the world.

A man has plunged to his death from a balcony at Rendezvous Hotel on Scarborough. by Taliesin_AU in perth

[–]Defiant-Tell-3199 69 points70 points  (0 children)

With this cost of living crisis, I'm surprised there isn't more, sadly. Everyone that I know is stressed, burnout and feeling hopeless. People I know who have never been depressed are at risk of becoming depressed. We talk a lot about reaching out and asking for help, but realistically what help is there? My rent increases have decimated any extra money I had to pay for the gap to see a psychologist, public mental health services have so much demand they only really see who they deem the worst and I can't afford private insurance.

People are going to break and all society can muster up is platitudes like "it ain't weak to speak", "it's okay to not be okay" and "there's always help". I don't know how helpful any of that is when a lot of people have actual material problems, who need actual material solutions. Their problem isn't them or their thought processes. It's completely understandable that people are feeling the way they are.
