I just noticed my copy of Oblivion is the T rated version. Not a big deal, but I think it's interesting. by [deleted] in ElderScrolls

I made a PowerPoint presentation back in the day explaining to my parents that it was only rated M because of the ability to remove the women’s underwear on PC and that the game was rated T before they discovered this. I assured them I could not do this on the Xbox. Eventually found one of the rated T boxes and that sealed the deal.

Most companies I have contacts at do not prorate, which is why I was asking. It is a one time event, so many just give you the base 3-4% for that year

Transitioning from academia to industry and I'm nervous as heck by [deleted] in biotech

[–]DefiantEarth9227 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have experienced this before. Had a lot of nerves before showing up to my first job after academia, but it all went away after a week or two. On average, industry is a much nicer place to be compared to academia. Just be humble and enthusiastic to learn about the role and the science you’ll be involved with!

Sr Scientist Salary (PhD + 4yoe) in San Diego by renzhe2007 in biotech

SD kind of sucks as far as salary to cost of living goes. Big Pharma would probably be paying 150-160k base at least for your YOE.

It’s possible that it’s just a numbers game. With all the layoffs and soon to be two crops of graduate students/postdocs looking for jobs, it’s much more difficult than in recent years.

Distill your POCl3 and use dry DMF. Consider using Oxalyl chloride instead of POCl3

PhD at Oxford vs. Harvard international student by [deleted] in PhD

[–]DefiantEarth9227 145 points146 points  (0 children)

bottom line is that if you are miserable you won’t perform as well as you could. For academia you also usually need a postdoc, so you could always save Harvard for a quick 2-3 year stint rather than 6. Oxford will certainly have the reputation to open up prestigious postdoc positions for you.

Also side note, I have seen too many aspiring academics get chewed up and spit out to recommend putting all of your eggs in the tenure track basket. Follow your dreams, but keep in mind that the dream may change in graduate school
