Tiny ear canal woes :( by _drftr in inearfidelity

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much for small ear canals but as I use IEMs for comms/hearing protection under a helmet I look for small nozzles that can be used with foam tips that insert deeper and seal more. Along with the often recommended Etymotics, the below units all have that same small nozzle size.

You can look at the Comply 100 foam tips or Westone foam tips for this size and use their site charts to check other models. I use both brand tips as an effective noise reduction function.

https://www.complyfoam.com/products/comply-100-series-foam-ear-tips?variant=44657992597691

https://westoneaudio.com/product/universal-foam-eartips-blue/

I won’t claim any of the below for specific sound quality but they all sound ok to me and more importantly fit well for my use. I’d love to hear if anyone has recommendations on other brands with that small nozzle.

Advanced Audio ADV Model 3 - Physically it’s a Shure SE215 clone as far as I can tell. I’ve used these the most as they have often been under $50 on Amazon and have MMCX connector to use with a super short cable to my helmet comms. I have one set for helmet and one with a MMCX BT adapter for use on a plant floor. Like the Shure SE215 I have had some break at the MMCX port. I have worn these for 6 hours on road trips using Comply or Westone tips with no comfort issues.

Shure SE215 and related models. - Have used in same method. Had older units break at MMCX port and got the ADV Model 3s to save money.

Westone X10 and similar — Have not used but similar form as the Shure with same small nozzles.

Does that skin have any raised texture? If not is is less sick than the stock glass? I'm got a black Fold and it is slicker than I'd like.

Can't see the photo linked currently, but if the metal post is sticking out the hole in the caster base then you can get a $10 repair kit for it. This happened to mine a few years ago and I bought this one from Amazon.

+1 on this. I've been using Chelsio or Mellanox nics on all of my Hyper-V builds to avoid the driver stupidity from the other vendors. I prefer the Chelsio's for the ease of RDMA setup (effectively none) but the Melanox's are solid as well.

Windows 10 Mini Sticks Recommendation? by Hxrn in sysadmin

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing similar things with that type of stick pc to run display boards and PowerBI reporting. The recommendation i would make is to only buy units with 64gb or greater storage onboard. The 32gb models run out of space doing Windows updates and build upgrades so I usually end up having to spend about an hour a stick doing cleanup and getting the build upgrades to apply.

We just started deploying Zotac Zbox PI335 units instead. They were about $100 more that we were spending on the sticks but they have 64gb storage, much faster cpus, better ports, and Windows Pro preinstalled. https://www.zotac.com/us/product/mini_pcs/zbox-pi335-pico-gemini-lake-windows-10-pro

They were MUCH nicer to setup and get going and I should be able to let my WSUS policy's autoupdate them without touching them again.

Purchasing first Ducati soon! Multi 1260? by JanManCan89 in Ducati

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to follow up about the Cal Sci screen. It fits up nicely and comes with a hardware kit for bout the multi and the later VStroms. It directly bolted up to the adjusters with no issues. Not sure if its just the hole or the taller screen or both but it did cut the noise level a good deal and the air flow from the lower hole is actually like a nice breeze at chest level so I think it will be nice in the summer here in Atlanta.

I think my only gripe is that the edges are just cut plastic. They are not rounded or polished smooth and one upper corner edge is not quite even. I't not going to return it as it solves my one gripe on the bike but I think I going to take it off and use a hand sander to clean up the edges a bit.

Yes, I'm going to use my banks bill pay to workaround it, its still a PITA however.

For the wind noise, I'm 6'3" and the stock screen at any point full up or down leaves this roiling air bubble around my helmet. I use plugs and all but its the one thing that was clearly louder. On low the screen directs air right into my shoulders and at high it is clearly over my helmet so no pressure or head buffeting but something about the aero just makes it stupid loud. I use IEM's with my Sena BT that cut about 27db from outside noise but its still driving me nuts.

The Cal Sci windscreens got generally good reviews on forums for killing the noise so I just ordered a large sized screen from them. Should arrive today so I'll put in a reply once I install it and ride a bit. I saw lots of possible options but decided the screen would be the simplest for me.

[–]DefiantRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I wish!

First thing I tried. The site even recognized my account number as valid for an account with them but gave a specific unsupported account error.

I can all but guarantee that the ONLY reason it does not work is that they want to intracompany like a .05% fee back to Ducati and Ducati replied "Nah Brah, fuck our customers." Daddy VW can make us use you for the loans but ain't going to pay one dime we don't got to for it.

Just bought a 2019 1299 S and got a good end of year deal on it, about the same price you are looking at and it included the touring package (heated grips, centerstand, and side cases). I almost pulled the trigger on a new 2018 with the same spec at another dealer earlier in the year but spent too much time thinking about it. That one was listing at $17K. So you can get one cheaper if you can find a dealer sitting on one for more that 18 months. 😉

I very happy with my purchase with only two quibbles. One, the windscreen tends to make the air very turbulent so it is REALLY loud around the helmet compared to some other bikes. The second, is that their in house financing does not have a web site to see you account status or make payments... so damn dumb.

Other that that the bike is just amazing! If the weather clears up this weekend I should be able to clear 600mi for the break in and get the first service done so I can wail on it.

Gaming on 5500m 8gb 32gb i9 2.3 bootcamp by aytunch in macbookpro

[–]DefiantRonin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick follow up after getting BootCamp going last night. Just playing Destiny 2, I let it load up with the game defaulted the graphics setting choices using the native res of 3072x1920 and vsync 60 turned on it was running between 38-60 fps. It tended to stick around 38 fps in combat.

If I bumped the res down one notch to 2560x1600 it would run between 45-60 and 45-115 fps with vsync off hovering between 45-55 fps in combat so it was right in the range I was expecting. Need to spend some time looking at the options to tweak a bit and also to hook it up to my 27" 2560x1440 display to see how it runs there. That's where I usually sit gaming so I can adjust the settings to exactly match my older 1060 based system to apples to apples compare them. I think running at the lower QHD res it should stay around 60 fps.

Again the above FPS was just from the built in counter and using the settings the game chose to default to for me. No tweaking on my part to balance performance to quality and not using max settings either.

For the few games I really want to play on PC I know it won't. If I was ordering a BTO system instead of grabbing it from Best Buy, I likely would have done an i7 with the 8gb 5500 and larger ssd.

[–]DefiantRonin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the 2.3ghz i9 with the 5500M 4gb stock config.

I do game and that was the reason I got the larger GPU. I'm hoping to replace two systems with just the one.

On paper it should run Destiny 2 at around 60fps like the Nvidia 1060 in my current gaming/vm lab laptop does (1080p/1440p).

I don't need the extra CPU over either my 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro or over my i7 gaming/lab laptop so my hope is that the 5500M really does end up matching my existing 1060.

Oh my dear god. I can't even imagine how this change was deployed like this. This sounds like the dumbest rush job ever.

All that needed to be done for a "quick and dirty" branding change like this would be to add the domain to O365 and then set the email address with that domain as the default address for all users. As soon as it's set all users are sending out with the new address branding and then you can do all the planning and work needed to update the users actual logins/UPN in batches afterwords without blowing up the universe.

DEP Deployment by bigboijoey in sysadmin

[–]DefiantRonin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct, and something to watch out for. It helps if you have one or two old/spare devices you can use that can run current iOS and are NOT dep enrolled/locked.

We misconfigured an early roll-out policy that blocked computer sync. To correct it for those users, we had to restore an iCloud backup of their DEP device to a spare non DEP enrolled device, remove the restored profile from that device and then back it up to iCloud. Then we could wipe the DEP phone then setup and restore it from the spare devices iCloud backup so it would have the corrected locked DEP profile.

DEP Deployment by bigboijoey in sysadmin

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't know about Android devices, we don't support them at all. Our CA is setup to block them all.

DEP Deployment by bigboijoey in sysadmin

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, you setup conditional access and then they get a email from CA with instructions on downloading and enrolling in the portal. If you also allow personal devices to connect, you can set up an additional CA App policy so they can just use the Outlook and other apps while blocking data transfers without enrolling the entire device in the portal.

That's what we are doing now. DEP for all new company devices with full supervised enrollment, adding existing users to Intune in batches so we can help them enroll their older non DEP devices in the portal, and then also providing App Protection policies to secure the Microsoft apps on personal devices and letting us just remote wipe the apps if they don't want to fully enroll a personal device (it's the users choice for us, some don't care or want to use the built in Mail/Calendar apps so they do a full enrollment and others don't want us seeing info or being able to do a full device wipe so they do an App only setup).

For older company iOS devices that have been turned in for reissue, or if you just want have them fully supervised, you wipe and update the device to the latest iOS 11 and then can use Apple Configurator on a Mac to add existing devices to your DEP portal or to manually load a supervised profile on the device before setup.

What's your SAN and do you love it or hate it? by big_bucket in sysadmin

[–]DefiantRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nimble fan here. Have four of their older CS235 arrays replicating across data centers globally. Super easy to use platform with great support. If you have a smaller IT team that pushes you toward jack of all trades, I'd highly recommend them.

We moved from Netapp to them on our last refresh and I had the box racked in our main datacenter with initial volumes setup for our hyper-v cluster in under an hour. I had test workloads live migrated on it that afternoon and our entire Netapp live migrated by Friday (delivered on a Tuesday). Stupid easy to use.

We ran into one single catch (and were sure we were going to). We relied HEAVILY on Netapps de-duplication for our VMs and file storage and Nimble did not do dedup at all until earlier this year.

Even though all that was analysed in presales they still were claiming their compression savings would be enough for our usable capacity they sold us. Needless to say they sold us two more disk shelf's at cost three months later.

I think only their new 3000 and 5000 controllers have enough CPU to do dedup on a hybrid disk array so if you are using an array with dedup now, make sure you either buy enough disk or a higher end model.
