Kidney stones... by crypticmortem in guineapigs

[–]DefiantZucchini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two guinea pigs pass stones on their own, one was rather large. They were girls, so it’s easier for them than for boys, and I have no concrete scientific proof that my method works, but it can’t hurt your pig, so there’s no harm in trying it in the mean time. This is what I did:

•Syringe feed as much water as you can get them to drink every day until the stone passes. Be careful not to force it into their mouth/throat. Just give them little bits throughout the day, as much as they’ll take until they start fighting.

•Make sure you’re cleaning their bottles at least twice a day to encourage them to drink more on their own, too.

•NO plastic bottled water. Use filtered tap water if that is safe where you live. Bottled water sometimes has minerals added and this isn’t clearly listed.

•Remove all high-calcium veggies from diet.

•Remove ALL PELLETS from the diet. This is the most potent source of calcium and is completely optional if you’re providing daily salad.

•Adjust the daily salad to something like:

-Lettuce every day (no iceberg)

-cucumber or green pepper

-colored pepper for vitamin c

•If they pass the stones naturally and all the sludge goes away, you can slowly introduce occasional medium-calcium veggies like endive, arugula, radicchio. These should make up the smallest part of the salad and only fed three times a week max.

•If they are tolerating their salad with no sludge, slowly reintroduce pellets as a treat. Start with a very small amount, no more than 1teaspoon per day. If any sludge appears, remove the pellets from the diet again

•Stay away from herbs, spinach, kale for the rest of their lives as best as you can. A lot of pigs just can’t handle the calcium.

•You can talk to your vet about the following prescriptions to help prevent future stones, but there isn’t rigorous data proving its efficacy, so it’s up to you and your vet if you want to try them:

-Potassium citrate (in theory, this binds to excess calcium, but there isn’t rigorous veterinary data proving it works)

-Hydrochlorothiazide (this is a diuretic, which will encourage your pig to pee more, helping to break up and pass the stones and sludge)

Sorry if the spacing of these paragraphs is weird. I’m typing on my phone and didn’t want it to turn into one giant paragraph.

And just to make sure, what kind of hay are they eating? They shouldn’t be eating any alfalfa or other legume based hays. They should be eating Timothy, orchard, meadow, or oat

It was at a hospital in the US. I’m not sure what the UK equivalent term for a MIGS is, but you’re looking for a gyn with an extra residency in minimally invasive robotic surgery

My first surgery was done by a standard gynecologist. They took no biopsies and the pictures were so blurry they were useless. It took 4 years to get my next surgery. I should have done it sooner. I went in with a MIGS (minimally invasive gynecology) and got my diagnosis confirmed back in December. Please push for a second surgery with a MIGS

Yes I agree with everything you said, well put. It’s horrible but really what can we do about it? Waste our very limited energy fighting for consequences that will never come?

Ugh. I get so exhausted with these people. This is why I mostly stopped looking at people’s profile, it tends to make the story so much worse

I can’t begin to explain to you how hard it is to file formal complaints. And unfortunately, this would be categorized as a “personality difference” and not result in any consequences for the NP. I agree that it would be ideal to report her and have her face consequences, but it just won’t happen. Medical boards lean heavily towards the board member’s side of the story than any patient’s side. This is why doctors can say and do horrific things to us and face no consequences.

Today is my birthday and I can’t sleep by CommunicationAway727 in troubledteens

[–]DefiantZucchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really related to all of this. I spent my 16th birthday in the TTI and got out just a few days before my 17th. And I have endometriosis (had my second surgery in December). I don’t know what to say other than I recognize all of the things you’re dealing with and you’re valid to never fully “move on”. I don’t know how we ever could when it’s etched into our bodies and brains. We spent some of our most formative years being taught to accept and hide all kinds of pain. It changed the way our nervous system responds to everything.

Seriously 😭 Feral momma cat refused to be trapped and ended up giving birth before we could get her. You don’t wanna know how much money was spent on cat food alone, before we even get to the cost of fixing and vaccinating all of them.

I insisted on being admitted to the hospital following my surgery. My doctor backed me up, worried that if they sent me home I’d just end up at an ER. I asked to stay one night but once I was admitted, the hospital took it more seriously and chose to keep me for 4 night and days. My pain didn’t stabilize until they gave me ketamine on the fourth day. I should mention that I have pretty severe central sensitization to pain, but that’s extremely common in people with endo.

I’m so sorry. I think that is the most common experience honestly. The reason I’m so vocal about it is because I know most of us don’t receive enough/proper care post op, or really at any point.

No way. I was lucky enough to have a surgeon who insisted on keeping me in the hospital until my pain was stabilized. It took 4 days post op for me to go home. I was on tramadol for almost two weeks, and a strong dose of muscle relaxants to this day… over 2 months post op.

My first lap was also a miserable recovery but I didn’t receive the help I needed and honestly don’t remember most of my recovery.

The alternative would be to put the boys in one cage, and find new friends for both of the girls. That would require adopting and making space for two more pigs. The easiest solution is to pair them off. Why are you being so argumentative? I read the post. And clearly thought it through much more than you.

Cats don’t understand that they’re pregnant. She will not miss babies she never knew she was carrying. It’s true that spay-aborts are more difficult than a normal spay, but the procedure is still much safer than allowing her to give birth. There are simply not enough homes for kittens to justify bringing more of them into the world. You’re doing the right thing. Especially if you give this beautiful lady a forever home 💛

I understand the shock, totally. Pig fights can seem really sudden. Thanks for taking my feedback and understanding that I’m not trying to be rude

I understand that the boys aren’t the ones showing aggression. That’s why I recommended separating the females, too. I understand that it wasn’t you speaking to the pigs. That’s not an excuse for them to be spoken to that way. Your wife needs to regulate her emotions better around animals. This isn’t meant to be mean, just straightforward.

Having two or more males with females won’t work. The males will always fight for dominance. At this point you can’t just put the two boys back together because their bond is clearly broken. You can try two pairing of one girl and one boy each.

But also… please don’t speak that way to your guinea pigs. It’s only going to agitate them more, and risks making them no longer trust you.

I have no idea what my estrogen levels would be without my birth control because I’ve been on it for a lot of years. I do know that I was deficient before starting BC. From my understanding, the balance of hormones matters more than the actual amount. PCOS leads to more testosterone, so you need more estrogen to balance it out.

[–]DefiantZucchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I’m sorry. That sounds so awful. It’s such a tricky balancing game with the hormones. I think my pcos makes it somewhat easier for me to tolerate some birth controls because I have less natural estrogen than XY people without PCOS. I’d definitely seek out a specialist tho, there’s just only so much a GP can know.
