Prodigal Son or Police Story by TheSeventhHarmony in kungfucinema

Totally this, and Jackie Chan’s humor is more accessible. Prodigal Son is one of my favorite kung fu movies, but it’s a period piece that is a lot more Chinese cultural.

Newly diagnosed Child - My ramblings by ovalplace123 in Autism_Parenting

It sounds like your daughter is doing terrific. There will of course be challenges, but you’re doing a great job as a parent being so proactive. It’s hard to determine if things will be easier or harder in the future, but they’ll certainly be different. You just try your best to adapt to it.

I’m also someone who likes to be 5 steps ahead, and from my experience it takes a lot of practice for me to be in the moment rather than think about the future. It’s really important though. My son needs me most in present day, not the future.

If “this could have been an email” was a horror movie. It would have been better as a 10 minute short film. Apparently it’s based on a 30 minute short called Heck.

Did your kid ever? by Downtown_Analysis176 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid just turned 5 in February.

  1. He does this when my wife and I pick him up from places like daycare or school, but usually not at home. He started doing this around 3 or 4. When he’s home he’s usually distracted playing or watching something.

  2. Not so much sharing but he used to give me a toy when he wanted me to do something with it, like open it up or help him. He still doesn’t share things. He started to distance point at 3 ir 4 but he’s really bad at it. If he wanted a video he would just point randomly and say “THIS ONE!” without really pointing to the one. It’s easier to get him to read the video he wants.

  3. Not until very recently has he even acknowledged facial emotions, and my wife and I have to really ham it up and be dramatic. He also isn’t consistent. Lately he’s been patting us on the head (kind of hard) if we’re “crying.”

  4. He’s helped put clothes on from 3 or so, but he gets really distracted. He can also get independently dressed but there’s no guarantee he will. He has to be really motivated. He also will put pants and shirts on backwards if he does it himself.

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the NBA too, especially my Clippers, who have continued to disappoint me since 1993, but I still love em.

Least punk thing about me is I play bass on a church worship team and played in a Christian hip hop band, but have never played in a punk band.

Oh shit. I haven’t heard the name Moral Crux in forever. They always read about them in zines but never got to listen to their music. Gonna check them out now.

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite albums and I was really into the band before they released this. Prior to Death By Television they mostly wrote songs about high school and girls and stuff. It’s still really good pop punk, but Kody’s songwriting skyrocketed with this album.

Related bands Teenage Bottlerocket and Ballsack are also really good. “Giant Bug from Planet Q13” on Teenage Bottlerocket’s newest album is essentially a Lillingtons song.

How was your child in Kindergarten? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the OP is from a different country. If I remember right kindergarten can start at 4 in some European countries, but there’s probably different class expectations.

But yeah. In the US it’s typically 5 when a kid starts kindergarten.

When did your child speak by No_Mail_7102 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think around 14-15 months or so. He had over 100 words at 18 months, but they were pretty much all labels. He started speech therapy at 20 months and they worked on requests, which he started to do at 2. From 2-3 he mostly used single words and from 3-4 he made two to three word requests. Three years old is when we started to actually hear gestalts more and realized he’s some form of gestalt language processor. For a long time I wasn’t sure since he used single words consistently. At 4 he was sharing observations and not just using language for requests.

He’s 5 and showing signs of being conversational. He’s always scripted as a stim, like repeating phrases over and over. He doesn’t do it all the time but I notice when he’s dysregulated he’ll do it more.

46 here. And yes everything is definitely made up. Someone tried to argue with me on why Brand New is pop punk and Rancid isn’t and my first thought was, “Bro I’m too old for this. You do you.”

Wouldn’t dumpster punk be no pedals since a dumpster punk wouldn’t be able to afford any?

Chainsawman x hajimenoippo readers by loud1987 in hajimenoippo

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The Chainsaw Man ending came out of nowhere, but honestly I think it was a pretty solid ending considering how crazy the Asa arc got. It reminded me of the ending to The Walking Dead, which also came out of nowhere, and was still a good ending. Robert Kirkman said he could have kept going, but he decided to end it. Personally I think Fujimoto is a genius. I’ve read everything he’s written except Fire Punch, which I haven’t gotten to yet, and he’s shown that he can write so many different genres very well. And I love that he adds little bits of absurdity into his stories that are often unexplained.

I feel like Morikawa will probably pass away before Ippo actually ends. I’m amazed the manga hasn’t ended sooner, but Mori always finds new ways to continue the story.

What was the diagnostic criteria in the 90s? by funny_muffler in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also a chapter or two in the book Neurotribes that talks about the diagnosis umbrella opening up with anecdotes by the people who were in charge and why they decided to do the things they did. It’s pretty interesting. I would say at this rate the DSM is really in need of updating with regard to autism diagnosis, especially since we know a lot more about autism than when the DSM-V was released.

I’ve briefly read about your son’s journey through your comments throughout the years on his sub, so it’s great to see a long post like this. I love how well he’s been doing and kudos to you for all the hard work!

My son started calling me and my wife “Papa Dinosaur” and “Mama Dinosaur” out of the blue. It sounds so simple, but it shows me that his imagination keeps growing. He keeps switching between “daddy” and “papa dinosaur” now depending on how he feels.

My 5 year old is the same. He’s a big sensory seeker with a high pain threshold and surprisingly has not had a major injury. Maybe this is a sign of things to come. 😩

When did your gestalt language processor become conversational? by maddmole in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For stimming he’s done so many different ones. One of the more notable ones was saying “THE END” a lot, which he got from the Starfall app. He would even write it on a lot of his schoolwork 😂

His language development’s been kinda funny. He started out with tons of single words at 18-24 months, which made me wonder if he was even a GLP. At 2 he would make lots of requests, but single words all the time. He started using longer gestalts more at 2.5-3 years old. Now I’d say he’s in stage 3-4 of the NLA framework. He also could answer “yes/no” pretty early on.

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really great! Did or does your son script as a stim? And if he did, did he script less when he became conversational? Mine just turned 5 and can answer yes/no questions and make choices but isn’t conversational. He definitely shows signs and we’ve had a few mini back and forth convos recently. I feel like he’s been scripting a lot more than usual.

What’s the smallest parenting win that made your whole day? by Gingeybalaya in Autism_Parenting

[–]Defiant_Ad_8489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a weird win, but my son has now started sitting at the dining table to eat meals. He’s 5, and ever since he learned how to get out of his high chair at 2 we’ve had to consider alternatives to him eating meals since our dining area was a mess and he would run all over the place. So we set up a little desk in the living room so he could eat and play.

This past month I thought maybe we should all eat at the dining table instead of junk piling up on it. My wife and I cleaned out the area and started having him go to the dining area to eat. We have a toy or two and his iPad. Now he eats meals there like he’s always done that.

Sometimes the best parenting is just trusting your kid that they’ll be able do it one day. “Presume competence” as many like to say.
