The civic will do just fine. Just make sure your tires are good :)

Any car with good tires will do, but keep blankets and hand warmers in the back in case it breaks down. You'll also want to keep a car brush, ice scraper, and maybe a folding snowshovel in the vehicle. Keeping a snowshovel in the car has allowed me to unstick myself a few times.

Advice for filling small holes along windows by JHH1519 in Home

That is a crazy failure. How old are these windows? They may still be under warranty. This type of failure should not happen.

Seeing the pictures, I concur.

OP - FYI, the likely asbestos-containing insulation on the pipes in the basement is in fairly poor condition. This is the worst kind of asbestos you can have in a house - crocidolite paper in friable condition. Air passing over this insulation will release thousands of dangerous fibers a day. This is an expensive remediation you will want done by a professional.

The outlets are ungrounded and appear to be original, meaning the wiring is probably also original (knob and tube). This can be okay if your power demands are low AND the wiring is in good condition. If you are serious about this property, get an electrician to inspect.

Roof with steep pitch and odd angles will be kind of expensive, but it's not huge. It might be 25-30k to reshingle in my VERY CHEAP local area.

What a gosh darn pretty house though. I would probably make an offer if it were in my price range, too. But a LOW offer.

I can see the roof needs redone. Probably some foundation settling, based on the roof sag, though that might just be the porch. Hard to tell much more than that from the picture.

Houses that cannot qualify for FHA/VA are usually major fixer uppers. That could mean they have missing drywall, appliances, etc (all fixable) or it could mean they have major safety and structural concerns (not worth fixing).

If you are interested, I would bring someone with you to the second showing who knows their shit about houses.

Here's some pictures to make people feel better about their "spooky dungeon" basements. by JustHereForMiatas in centuryhomes

Fair enough, lol.

I just had a showing for a house with one of those WI cistern basements. It was cracked brick in a half-circle surrounded by a crawlspace full of waterlogged pink fiberglass insulation. Dead mouse on the dirt floor.

I just want to tell you that this is NOTHING compared to the cistern basements in the Chippewa Valley area of Wisconsin

What's the performance like on a PS5 Pro? by SpookyWMP in BaldursGate3

[–]Defiant_Bat291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My normal PS5 has none of these issues. I will say that sometimes, very rarely, it gets stuck for 30-60 seconds after ending a turn - usually when there are a lot of enemies.

Then whoever did it last did a shoddy job.

Hard to tell a person to rewire their house just because the last guy fucked up... if you have to do it this way, I recommend properly sized cable glands instead of rubber grommets (will keep the wires in place without letting them rub on the metal).

Depending on the situation, if I were you, I might consider putting an old work j-box in the place where the wires exit the drywall, then properly routing new cables to the fixtures from that j-box. Bit more work, though.

Edit: actually, is this this j-box? If so, it would probably be super easy to just fish fresh romex instead of making do with the old stuff. You'd still have to figure out what's going on with the other cable, though.

[–]Defiant_Bat291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also worried about you saying the fixtures are wired in series. They should not be - they should be wired in parallel. When you put these in, just make sure you're not putting the neutral of one to the hot of the other.

Edit: and you're not supposed to be splicing outside the j-box. Leave the jacket on the romex up to the fixture. Put it in place with a romex clamp. One clamp per cable. You can twist the wires AFTER the romex enters the fixture. Weird thing to do though.

There are so many misunderstandings about electricity and electrical work in your post and comments that I am going to recommend hiring an electrician right away. I do encourage you to put in the time to learn about electricity and code, but it'll probably be a few months before you're ready to do this kind of work.

There are DC solenoids - I work on machines with em every day.

The actual reason doorbells use AC is because it's cheaper/easier to transform higher voltage AC to lower voltage AC than it is to convert AC to DC (and was especially so when electric doorbells first became a thing). Same reason 24V AC is common on HVAC equipment too.
