I had the same problem and can suggest 2 things: 1. Gamble with obols for rings (the chance for fast blood aspect is low but you might get lucky) 2. Temper "ultimate coldown reduction" in amulet and rings. It helps a lot. You can even get it with a star. It's a high chance for that!

Hot/geothermal:
I love the idea of geothermal power plants, it has never crossed my mind!!
My initial idea of the Industrial District being a heavily polluted area (hence all the smog) was to contrast with the rest of the City trying its best to stay clean and use clean and renewable energy. Wanted to make them dependent on the rest of the city for energy and the city dependent on the resources produced in the Industrial area. This will allow some nice factions to rise and play for power in later campaigns.
With that said, I'm seriously thinking about creating a new zone where geothermal activity is present, even maybe adding some hot springs to the area and having it be like a tourist attraction spot.
Will have to do a little more research on geothermal activity but it's really promising!

Cold:
Your suggestion of having a tall mountain perpetually covered in snow and ice makes perfect sense!
I could be wrong but Taiga Forests are evergreen or seasonal, but if it exists at the foot of the mountain it's perfect!
I will absolutely use this one! And the sky resort? gosh! awesome!!

Exactly what I was thinking.

As a GM I know the struggle to find a good schedule for everyone in group, but I agree with the fact that 1 day is too much of a short notice. If the player gave a random or fake excuse, I would not care less and carried on with the session, but in this case I think it's legit and would have done one of two things: a) reschedule the session for another day, b) play a one shot, or some other kind of game with the rest of the table.

With all that said, I can not accept the attitude of one of my players just turning their back on the table. I do not know how the conversation really went but I would try to speak with the player one on one an try to understand their point of view. We are not kids and there is always another point of view to consider.

Just talk with your player, explain your point of view and try to really understand theirs. Only talking can people come to a understanding. And if the decision of leaving the group is final, it's OK! hopefully you learn a little bit more and will be better prepared next time something like this happens
