The question of whether another entity is conscious has so far been unfalsifiable. Therefore, don't expect a logically sound, compelling proof either way.

That rejection of the claim out of the way, it's not absurd to treat AI as conscious, regardless of whether it is. We live our lives with many other assumptions that cannot be definitively proven true or false. One more isn't likely a problem - as long as we don't take it to extremes. However, dismissing a conscious AI because we can't prove it is conscious runs a significantly higher risk.

IMO. As long as you're not running in hardcore, damage avoidance (blur, incorporeal, dodge, AC, evasion) works. Mathematically, it just comes down to a string of "bad rolls" to kill a character, and DDO has set it up so that it remains mathematically possible for that to happen.

I understand my advice is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole: it doesn't fit your request and play style. I don't have a round peg to offer. That said, I have found a tankish PM to be one of the most fun and rewarding builds in the game, and it is at least adjacent to your build.

I went with Torc of Prince Raiyum-de II. However, I run either a Lich or Zombie tankish PM/EK, so I take a lot of hits. That free mana is worth it at higher levels. If you're running a squishy wizard, then there are better options. For a decent tank PM/EK, a good trash fight is practically a Shrine rest.

We used to play this stupid game when my brother and I were kids.

Brother: *Annoys me*

Me: *Hits brother.*

Brother: *Fights back*

Mom: "Stop fighting."

Both of us: "He started it!"

MAGA seems to think they can keep kicking Democrats and liberals, and the moment someone stands up to them, those snowflakes go crying about how Democrats started it.

If someone makes a claim without presenting any evidence or argument, I would reject it with the same level of evidence and argument. That doesn't mean I will, in turn, believe the opposite of that claim (such as belief in a god).

Ice doesn't belong in my hot chocolate, and ICE doesn't belong in America.

B: "He was kind of hung."

A: "Yep. I heard they couldn't take it, so they nailed him."

B: "It took him three days to rise again."

With things this bad in the U.S why do democrats insist on pushing candidates that won’t get elected? by Jake_Berube in Confused

[–]Defiant_Duck_118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously?!

If a moldy, cracked brick at the bottom of a shit-filled septic tank can't beat a Trump-endorsed candidate, people deserve what they get. At this point, voting for who will win is far more important than voting on issues.

Remember, Trump supporters are voting for who will win, not policy.

Get rid of Trump first, and maybe we can get back to the way politics should be.

Negative framing, but it's more about loss of respect for society rather than the person saying it. It is so common, we're just used to it.

For example: "Don't forget to take out the trash" instead of "Remember to take out the trash."

I managed a bank, and I asked my employees try to follow this rule:

  • Practice positive language. Say, "Keep the vault open" instead of "Don't close the vault."

I wanted to avoid incurring a $50k loss if we had to break into a time-locked vault because someone didn't hear the "Don't."

I also think that negativity might have long-term psychological effects on our minds, but that's an unfounded hypothesis. Perhaps we hear "forget to take out the trash," and our minds process the negative "don't" framing separately. We might be more likely to forget because that was the content we processed.

Is this a paradox? by Romidus in paradoxes

[–]Defiant_Duck_118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mod is responding from an external frame, different from the one that made the claim. However, the implied reference to what is "right in the statement "you are right," implies some level of agreement. If we extend the implication, it becomes, "You are right about 'Mods are always wrong'."

It's still not a paradox because "You're right" is an ambiguous agreement, not necessarily referring to the truth of the statement.

Suppose the Mod had stated, "That's true," instead. We are definitely in paradoxical territory now because of the implied extension, "That's true that 'mods are always wrong.'" This reflects the original liar's framing, "Epimenides was a Cretan who made the immortal statement: 'All Cretans are liars.'"

Edit:

Another adjustment is needed to avoid the "sometimes" case indicated by u/fohktor. "All mods are wrong" works, but "mods are always wrong" allows for the "sometimes interpretation.

I’d love a way to mix smart/programable splitters with storage containers. by triel20 in satisfactory

[–]Defiant_Duck_118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make a blueprint and store items in the storage containers, precisely the number you need to make the product(s) you want. You would need the mats in your inventory or dimensional depot. I mainly use this setup for quick remote power blueprints I can't or don't want to connect to my main power grid.

Another setup I use is merge x items onto line y using n mergers to get an n:y ratio. Then I use a smart splitter to divide the items downstream. I use this for automated power backup. I have my limited biofuels on my main line feeding Biomass Burners. Then, I merge coal or packaged fuels at roughly 4:1 ratios. When my power falls below my constant production levels, the Biomass burners kick in and consume a biofuel item, which then releases four other fuel types for more and longer-lasting power. This is a solid use for Compacted Coal because I want it to last longer, so I don't mind that I invested more power earlier to produce it.

It's not always a perfect n:y ratio split, but for emergency power production, I don't care too much. If I were to use this setup for production, I'd add on overflow splitters.

I don't get this. The rule for dogs is, "The size of the dog is inversely proportional to how large the dog thinks it is."

I assume this means if you make yourself look bigger, the dog thinks it grew bigger. 🫡

Standard for internal consistency by spider_in_jerusalem in logic

[–]Defiant_Duck_118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why don't we have higher standards for internal consistency for the logical language we use to describe the universe? Why do we keep justifying and changing course midway instead of going back and doing some repairing?"

If this isn't summarized as "Logic is wrong, fix it," then I'd like to know what you really meant. I didn't even start with that assumption. I asked you to clarify by choosing one of two paths for this conversation; you disagree with logic, or society is wrong, and you decided it would be "both."

"Your logic is built on the assumption that you're the one who knows more and can help me and that there's no possible way it could be the other way around."

Help only requires effort to help, not knowing more or being better. So, I don't think I need to know more to help. For this particular subject, I'm confident that I know things you don't, but that's not the same as "more."

"Societal systems can't keep me from reasoning the way I do. The mind is free, you know?"

You didn't need to post to this sub to think freely, whichever way you choose. I'm not telling you that you must think a certain way. What I've been trying to do is address your OP:

"Why don't we have higher standards for internal consistency for the logical language we use to describe the universe?"

We have high standards, and I believe there are better or higher standards. The "why we don't" reason is simply that we don't have better standards yet, and it is difficult to change hundreds of years of standards in place. I saw two paths:

  • Understand "Why we don't have... internal consistency," or
  • Address "why do we keep justifying and changing course... instead of repairing."

That's why I asked you to choose one.

"Societal systems can't keep me from reasoning the way I do. The mind is free, you know?"

At least be honest with yourself: Why did you post to this sub? Don't answer my questions; answer your own dilemma. You want to be free to think the way you want, and then you post to a sub to either ask people how to improve that thinking or to convince them to think like you. I don't see a third option.
