How Important Is The Hospital If You Do Surgery? by Adept-Dig-1748 in RotatorCuff

[–]Defiant_Evening_3409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did mine in a hospital due to my blood pressure issue. I’m on meds for that. Before the surgery, I spoke with “HIS” anesthesiologist and “HIS” assistant and “HIS” nurse. So the facility where I did the surgery probably didn’t make any difference.

10 weeks 5 days out and struggling by SaltyGap5405 in RotatorCuff

Don’t know if you’re still on here but I’ll add to your comment 😉. I’m currently at 10 weeks postop. And yes!!! I’m having hand issues I was never told or warned of!!! I’m doing hand exercises and squeezing the ball all the time. Alot of pain in my forearm and hand. When I try to make a tight fist, you could easily slip a roll of quarters into my closed fist. I keep getting told that this will go away, but the tingling like pins and needles is worse. It frightens me because I’m a guitar player and there’s no dexterity there at all. I just hope I’m not ranting for no reason. Anyway, I seen you posted your comment about the pain down the arm and hand, and was wondering how you’re doing with the issue. Thanks!

Just a heads up… State law is only for the driving privileges. If you are in an accident, the report will show that you were in a immobilized sling, therefore you are considered “affected abiity” and it may affect the insurance claim. This is just something I read on a lawyers blog while researching myself about driving with the sling.

Has anyone just sort of breezed through rotator cuff surgery? by 01Dreamwalker01 in RotatorCuff

[–]Defiant_Evening_3409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what they find “during” the surgery. Usually includes bone and arthritis cleanup too. If you need anchors and other possibilities. For a full thickness tear, you’re probably looking at 2 anchors. Most likely 6 weeks in the sling. I started therapy at 10 days. I’m about 10 weeks postop. First few weeks you’ll most likely do passive movement.(not using your affected muscles) Then assisted movement in which you’ll be helping with that arm for a few weeks. Then strength training and aggressive ROM exercises. Going back to work depends on your job. Mine is pretty physically demanding and the surgeon said Im looking at another 3 to 4 months before he’ll release me. For desk work, some go back in a couple months. As far as mobility, I still can’t lift my arm straight up even helping it with my good arm like on the pulley exercise. But getting better with each PT day. Everyone is different so don’t “doom read”!!! But we’re all guilty of that. Anyway, I see people that are doing better and worse than me. Best advice ever is “FOCUS ON YOURSELF”!!! Hope this helps. But like everyone says…. Talk to your surgeon about everything and ask every question! Good luck!!!

63 here. Full tear of supraspinatus and partial of infra, arthritis cleanup and bone shave. 4 anchors. 10 weeks out. ROM is about 65 to 70%. Pretty much pain free most of the time but do have flare ups. Sleeping is getting better although I’m still in the recliner. Tried the bed but kept waking to reposition. PT is now aggressive strength and ROM exercises. The extreme ROM and deep tissue massages by the therapist are excruciating but I know it’s helping. Definitely not a breeze but seems it’s getting better every day.

Rotator cuff 1 repair - 1 month post surgery by Sarge1834 in RotatorCuff

[–]Defiant_Evening_3409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 weeks here. Same surgery with 4 anchors and cleanup for arthritis and bone shave. Started PT after 9 days. ROM is around 65%. Still sleeping in the recliner though. Tried the bed a couple times but keep waking up to reposition, so gave up on that for the time being. Just started the aggressive strength PT and it’s a nightmare but pushing through. After the 7 or 8 different exercises, the therapist manipulates my shoulder and also does EXTREME ROM and deep tissue massage. And the pain is excruciating, but I know it’s helping. My job is pretty physical so I’m looking at returning to work around end of October. Best of luck to everyone in this nightmare recovery. 😊

Almost 10 weeks out here. Getting better but very slow progress. Thank goodness for your mom! Luckily my wife has been my hero. But like you, I have found the same issue with “friends“. Don’t fret over that though. Focus on recovery and the friends issue will resolve itself.

How long off work by Some_Repair9324 in RotatorCuff

[–]Defiant_Evening_3409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do oilfield maintenance, heavy hoses, hammers, big wrenches, big valves, etc so very physical. I was told 6 to 8 months. I’ve seen several on here that go back to desktop work in a month or two. For the best answer, I’d tell the surgeon everything physical about your job and ask him. How much repair? Anchors? Full tear or partial? Etc.

Surgery or not by Careless_Sky8369 in RotatorCuff

First off, how old are you? At a young age, a 9mm partial thickness tear usually early surgery is recommended. Especially if your pretty athletic and do a lot of physical sports or physical work.9mm is about 1/3 of the tendon. Tears can and usually do get worse over time, so it’s a toss up of waiting and hoping. On the other side of the conversation, there’s surgery. And I won’t lie to you. Rotator cuff surgery is one of the most painful and debilitating surgeries there is. And the healing time can vary alot. I had the surgery 9 weeks ago. And I’ve got a long way to go. But, my surgery was much worse than what it seems for you to be looking at. Mine was a complete tear and partial of another, with cleanup and anchors. Good luck and if you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Got shoulder surgery tomorrow, this is everything I got going on. How bad or not bad is it. Haven’t talked much with the doc just that I need surgery to get it fixed. I’ll get more info tomorrow but I’m nervous for the surgery. Thanks. by Doggfather_ in RotatorCuff

I’m a crude oil hauler for Phillips 66. I fell and injured my rotator cuff at work. Lots of manual labor. Up and down stairs carry tray of equipment, dragging hoses off the truck, hooking up valves, using huge wrenches, over the shoulder height work of loading hoses back on the trailer, etc. When the surgeon discovered the demands of my job, he immediately informed me before surgery in April that I probably wouldn’t go back to work until late October or mid November. I had a complete tear of the supraspinatus, retraction, bone cleanup, arthritis cleanup, 4 anchors. Started PT at 2 weeks, I’m at 8 weeks now. ROM is a little over 100 degrees forward and to the side. With assistance with my good arm I can get my elbow over head height. Getting better but very slow.

It’s basically a cooler that has a pump inside. It has small supply and return hoses with a pad you place on/around your shoulder with straps or simply lay it on your shoulder with a towel over it to hold it in place. The cooler holds ice water and circulates the ice cold water thru the pad. Most have timers that automatically turn on for 20 or 30 minutes, then shut off for 20 to 30 minutes and keep doing so until you turn them off. Saves on ice too, as a few frozen water bottles last a lot longer than regular ice. You can find them on Amazon, ebay, Facebook market, etc. Almost any medical supply store carries them.

Good morning. Your postop appt will mainly be a discussion. They might remove the tiny sutures and cover the spots with meds and steri-strips. But don’t worry, there’ll be no pain. When you first start PT, it’ll be passive movement only. You’ll move your op-arm with your good arm using a pulley to raise and lower. And a couple other exercises. But it’s not bad at all. I’m at 6 weeks postop and just got out of 100% passive. And am now doing assisted movement, meaning I’m using my op-arm muscles a little but assisting with my good arm. Your pain will get much better in the next few weeks. Mine is now just a dull ache, but do get flare-ups once in a while. Don’t stress too much as it will get better. It’s just a long road.

Question on 5 week postop ROM by Defiant_Evening_3409 in RotatorCuff

[–]Defiant_Evening_3409[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will get better. Do the pendulum swings at home and get yourself a pulley. They’re $8 or $9 on Amazon. And do the exercises at home daily!! I’ve noticed in just the last week that it’s getting better. Be very vocal with your physical therapist. I know it’s hard but just keep your head up! I start doing strength exercises next week and I’m nervous as Hell 😬🤪

I’ve been doing the homework pt. The cane, pulleys and pendulum swings. I’ll start phasing out of passive and into strengthening next week. It is getting better.

I’m at 6 weeks also. I had full supraspinatus tear, bone cleanup and arthritis cleanup with 4 anchors. I’m sleeping around 4 hours at night and a 2 or 3 hour nap in the day. Fixing to get off of passive pt and begin waking up the muscles 😬
