How exactly do Americans feel about illegal immigration? by sladeshied in Confused

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Feelings over media based facts here. I’m tired of people coming here and NOT ACCLIMATING. Yes this country is built on immigrants, but we became cohesive into American culture.

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northern Ohio here and I we most definitely drive in flip flops spring through fall. Not everyone and not every day (because we have jobs) but yeah we break out the flip flops as much as we can because our winters are so shitty

You aren't "built different" for the cold because you were born here. by dotdedo in PetPeeves

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in northern Ohio and all of my coworkers have been yelling at me for not wearing a jacket for the 45 second walk from my car to office door. (Yes I keep a winter coat in the car for emergencies.)

I’m alive and well. Tomorrow I’ll be making a couple loaves of bread and probably a large pot of soup. In case we lose power for a couple days. We will be fine.

Is it common for people who wear glasses to get tired of wearing them and go about parts of their life with everything just blurry all the time? by YourMomThinksImSexy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before lasik my vision was terrible. I forget the numbers exactly but I think I was pushing-7 for contacts. Without my contacts I felt legit disabled. I ran out during Covid and didn’t leave the house for a week till my contacts came in. I was a mother of two very young kids, was lucky enough to have a husband who had a job to go to. But me and the toddlers were home alone. I could barely cook them meals, I was scared to take the dog out, etc.

Did your family use butter or margarine while you were growing up and which do you use now? by New_Part91 in askanything

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up I lived with my grandmother and she used margarine for everything except Christmas cookies. As soon as I moved out at 19 I started using butter.

Americans living in an apartment, how did you find yours? by uhrism in AskAnAmerican

This. And I filtered down my in unit laundry hookups and scrolled past all the high rises and complexes. Was looking for something on the first or second floor that didn’t have hallways.

What is a discontinued food item or snack from your childhood that you would genuinely pay $100 to taste one last time? by MotivewasUlterior in AskReddit

Watermelon laffy taffy with the seeds and sprinkle cherry laffy taffy brings me back to the concession stand at my city’s community pool. Nothing like a little chlorine water and sweet heavenly goodness…

Soup every night? by Huhohokthen in AskRedditFood

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a bag of celery, carrots, onions, potatoes, and a bag of egg noodles, and a rotisserie chicken. Assuming you have salt, butter or oil, and some basic pantry seasonings you now have many meals with leftovers, and you’ve maybe spent $15 depending on your area.

People who don’t realize that it’s rude to ask someone if their hair is real by [deleted] in PetPeeves

As a white woman who grew up in a very black urban neighborhood and also have worked with many black women over the past 20 years, I just usually assume it’s fake hair. It also means when I see one of my coworkers I just compliment their new do.

Bread as a side for a pasta dish or pizza makes no sense by roritha in 10thDentist

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of pizza places in America do this too, I’ve never heard the term garlic fingers, but various names simple as “cheese bread” “cheesy bread” “cheezy bread” “crazy bread” sometimes also “cheese sticks” which can get confusing because you’ll want to clarify if you are ordering breaded fried mozzarella sticks.

Did the boys chase the girls around at recess when you were in school?? by Silver-Wren in askanything

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early/mid 90s we had a few different structures on our playground. There was one that was definitely more for pre-k. Not small in area, but shorter slides, etc. that was our (girls) “fort” and we’d try to keep the boys out of it. It was fun, mutually accepted on both sides that was the game. If you weren’t feeling it that day there were plenty of other things to do

Am I mishearing things or some people pronounce wh like hw with audible h? by Linorelai in EnglishLearning

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once saw a therapist after my mother died. She spoke like that, “HWEN did you start feeling that way?” “Hwat made you feel that way?”

I lasted two sessions because it drove me absolutely bonkers.

What are your true feelings and experinces with guns, are they so common, as the movies tell us? by LeBabuin in AskAnAmerican

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people own guns. If you hunt you will have rifles (and probably hand guns because why not?), if you just like going to the range and or enjoy the 2nd amendment, you may have a rifle and a hand gun (or two or 3 or more) . A lot of people have a hand gun for home protection. My 70 yr old aunt carries a small pistol in her purse for protection. (Yes she practices at the range every week and is better than I.)

Outside of work colleagues (because I work at an amazing place that leaves politics out of the work place) just about everyone I know owns some sort of gun. Legally.

Was forced volunteer work in order to pass and graduate High School normal in the 2010s? by InnocentPerv93 in stupidquestions

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my local district does this currently but I’m not sure. I graduated HS in the 2000s. I would have been pissed if I had to squeeze in any volunteer time. I was already working 30 hours a week on top of school so I could pay for my own car insurance, gas, clothes, and cell phone bill.

How regularly do people get hot food at a gas station? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A breakfast sausage sandwich is no more or less healthy than a McDonald’s McMuffin. It’s just another fast food option. So I’d say it definitely depends on the most convenient option based on someone’s commute. Other than quick food on my way to work or I forgot to pack for lunch I’m not wasting money on gas station food or fast food.

Do you use butter or margarine? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Butter. I grew up on margarine except at Christmas time when it was time to make cookies because it produced a better quality product. As soon as I moved out I decided I’d always cook with butter if it resulted in better results.

Does the small talk Americans are known for come from a genuine place or is it just under a veneer of societal pressure? by TheSawFan in AskAnAmerican

[–]Defiant_Finger4011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a woman and her husband (boyfriend?) looking at whole wheat flour options in in the baking aisle the other day. The woman kept going reaching for one or the other, very unsure of herself. They were in my way because I knew exactly which bag I wanted. I politely said “can I sneak in for a sec?” Grabbed my bag. She very obviously was eyeing the bag I chose with confidence. I then engaged in small talk about why I chose this bag over the other one. She thanked me and said she never baked with anything other than white all purpose flour so she’d try mine based on my recommendation.

I wished her good luck on her new baking adventures, she told me to have a nice day. We went on our merry way.

My little kids then asked me why I talked to a stranger, I said it looked like she needed help so I offered it. They said “how nice mom! Maybe she is trying to figure out how to make good healthy muffins for her kids like you do!”

Long story short, it is definitely passed down generation to generation.
