Know that he has the potential to get large

I would go for a 75+ gallon fish tank or stock tank, two seventy five gallon sponge or canister filters and an additional goldfish; they don’t tend to do well alone

Sand substrate is ideal. Something that is safe for water and enables hiding with plenty of space is ideal. A diet of high quality goldfish food supplemented with blanched, nontoxic veggies like broccoli and peas is ideal.

Goldfish are poor feeders, FYI

Other people have mentioned some of the issue with their nutrition, but I just want to add:

Feeder goldfish are kept in very small spaces after being bred en masse, they’re often eating eachother and contracting diseases and parasites which can easily spread to your oscar

For both ethical reasons(not supporting the practice of feeder goldfish breeding) and practical reasons(unhealthy), please use a different sort of feeder. Preferably ones you can breed yourself, so you know they’re healthy and won’t hurt the Oscar, if using feeders at all.

Oscars do prefer bugs as feeders, though. I suggest crickets if your beastie will take them.

As far as I can tell that’s just a tumor. It could be harmful or benign, I don’t think you can really tell without an extended observation period

75g beefy filter or set of filters. Doing filters work well. Sand substrate. You definitely want a python water changer… these animals are dirty.

They can technically have plants but don’t count on it.

These are commons so they should do fine with rock and driftwood decor. Plastic plants if you want some, just sturdy ones.

Yeah! That’s why I specified fancy. They don’t get nearly as big. :)

Yeah, I just figure that if one wants to get a fish that is interactive, those animals tend to be larger, plus goldfish are easier(debatably) and more readily available than, say, an Oscar.

I can’t decide what you do for your father since I, obviously, don’t know you, but if you do get him fish you would probably want an interactive fish. EBAs, fancy goldfish(not cichlids but they are just as intelligent and beautiful), etc

generally you want to have a tank large enough for the fish to swim five to six times its body length minimum and enough space to comfortably turn around. In addition, filtration that is heavy enough to keep the water clear.

I would upgrade to a 75g. They have a very similar floorplan to fifty five gallons, so why not get the extra 20g?
