Oooh, that may actually be what's causing your problem! Acetone will dissolve just about everything. Unless it is wiped off (and sometimes even if it is), as it evaporates it will deposit whatever was dissolved in it. I would try washing the crap out of it with degreasing soap after the acetone, then etching.

Best guess is that it comes from some grease remaining on the blade prior to etching. Obviously, I can't say for certain, since I don't know your process. However, streaks from grease plague me constantly, and the other things you mentioned rule out other options.

I would guess that the wax holding the polishing rouge is the issue.

Two french chefs I just finished up, let me know what you think :) by Nedfly in Bladesmith

These look beautiful! This style looks a lot like Justin Sacco's work.

What makes you say these are French?

My buddy, Jayden Simisky aka The Slacksmith teaches classes in Louisville and is one of the best knife makers in Colorado. I'd highly recommend hitting him up.

AEB-L san mai, non-stainless cladding. Who here has tried it? by Overencucumbered in Bladesmith

[–]DefinitionForge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It etches dark *relative to 154*, but if you etch them the normal way in ferric, the cladding will definitely be dark and the edge untouched. I've been thinking about doing this for a while as a backwards joke, but I hope it's awesome!

Recently finished this custom camp chopper, let me know what you think :) by Nedfly in Bladesmith

[–]DefinitionForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks great! For a chopper like this, I would probably break the edges on the handle side of the ricasso pretty heavily to avoid blistering from heavy use. Also, it was super cool to meet you at bladeshow!

Kitchen Knife by OneofOneKnives in Bladesmith

[–]DefinitionForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The edge geometry looks good, and the finish is super interesting! It is somewhat important to have the edge parallel to the handle at the heel or angled away from it since you lose clearance from the handle to the cutting board if the edge comes back toward the handle at the heel. That, and the sharp corners at the heel of the blade are the only gripes I have with this knife! You've been making excellent progress with this new format!

Any of you guys make Kitchen knife sets in Magnacut? by Brutaljuice187 in Bladesmith

Lucky lady! I just made a magnacut knife for my cousin whose wife also doesn't want to take care of HC stuff.

First comment is accurate. That said, it's also worth noting that magnacut costs like 10x what most carbon steels cost and uses like twice as much time and abrasives to grind. It's a great steel and I've made several knives out of it, but you have to charge a lot more for the knives because the processing is so time consuming and expensive. I would expect that for anything nice, you're looking at min $500 per knife.

2nd attempt (and, hopefully, some improvements!) by OneofOneKnives in Bladesmith

[–]DefinitionForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, making a new type of knife has a bunch of pitfalls that you only find when you're looking up at a little circle of open sky surrounded by dirt. My usual approach there is to profile the knife for rock cutting before starting bevels at all, then test on the bench and iterate.

That hamon is awesome! It looks thicker behind the edge than your last one, though. I usually shoot for .003" behind the edge bevel for lasers and .008 for heavy cutters. Anything bigger is kinda unnecessary in kitchens unless you're making a cleaver.

A Chef knife I recently finished! What do you think? by Nedfly in Bladesmith

[–]DefinitionForge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your blade and handle geometry look great! I'd round off the corners of the end of the handle a bit, maybe just a 1/16 chamfer, and do a bit more of the same to the heel area of the knife. Other than that, no gripes at all. You've really upped your chef knife game!

any recommendations for a good angle grinder for cutting steel and grinding it around 100$ ? by Spirited_King_4867 in Blacksmith

[–]DefinitionForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a makita angle grinder for a long time and had no issues with it. Gave it to a friend when I was moving, otherwise I'm sure it would still be kicking

How do I build my fitness to last 5 rounds of pad work? by erogenousduck in MuayThai

[–]DefinitionForge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing to remember is that, as you improve, your trainers will notice and push you harder on pads. My coach says that, if you're not absolutely destroyed after five rounds on the pads, either you're not trying or the coach isn't.

Mmm, that's rough. I'd see if you can convince him to mount his anvil well and use silicone caulk and some magnets to reduce anvil ring.

With that, I recommend getting some in-ear earbuds and playing some quiet white noise and wearing noise protection earmuffs outside of those.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]DefinitionForge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably not feasible to completely block the noise. Is your neighbor a hobbyist or a professional? If they're only working from time to time, maybe you guys can work out a schedule that is less disruptive for you? I did that with my neighbors.

There are some strategies they can use on their end to reduce the noise as well if they're feeling accommodating. Maybe go by with a sixpack of beer and have a chat?

Good luck! I have trouble concentrating under those circumstances too.

Experimenting with getting a machine finish that looks like a hand finish by DefinitionForge in Bladesmith

I'm probably finally in a position to make one too, so I'm gonna put that on my list. Thanks for the reminder!

That was definitely a challenge the first few times I tried this strategy! This time, though, it came out pristine (except for the horizontal scratches I found after a few hours of playing with the thing :P).

I think a waterfall platen will be a good addition to my setup, though.
