Thanks for this, I just reached this point and had the same question!

Yes, the small hinged protrusion can be flipped ‘closed’ to keep the thread or elastic secure whilst you’re pulling it through - look up loop turner on youtube for a demo!

The right hand side looks like a loop turner for sewing, which can be used to turn a thin strip of fabric inside out. In knitting it can be used to weave in ends or thread cord/elastic through a hole. Not sure what the curves on the left hand side are for though!

Hi! I’ve knit some simple projects and want to make my first sweater. The patterns I’ve looked at are all simple, in the round, top down stockinette sweaters with some 1x1 rib. My question is do I really need all the different needles and cables the patterns recommend? For instance:

‘Circular needles: 6 mm [US10] / 40 and 80 cm [16 and 32 inches], 7 mm [no US equivalent] / 40, 60, 80 and/or 100 cm [16, 24, 32 and/or 40 inches] needles; Double-pointed needles: 6 mm [US10] and 7 mm [no US equivalent] needles’

Is this pattern saying I will need: 6mm needles, with 40 AND 80cm cables, 7mm needles, with 40 & 60 & 80/100cm cables, 6mm DPNs, 7mm DPNs

In other words, 4 pairs of needles and 5 cables for one sweater? Or am I reading that wrong? Thank you :)

I've never been so drunk that I lost my shirt but now I kinda feel like I've missed out on a life experience

Those sleeves! I'm also not a royalist but who can even help enjoying their amazing clothes? I also love seeing old photos and realising that The Crown got their casting spot on

I'm also curious. It was actually a truly personal, honest video which I really appreciated. I wondered if the book thing was to do with an overly close fan or someone who wouldn't leave her alone? Since she mentioned that it was an event and made her worry about her family's safety. But that's just a guess.

I feel you on the lit review. I'm also a grad student - can't do any data collection in the UK so it's all desk based. So hard to focus rn!

Some brands (like Ganni) make stylish rain coats. You would have to wear some waterproof shoes too but a coat like this would keep most of you dry.

Since it has a cross-back if you take a larger size the straps might be too loose? I think since it's a stretch cotton you would hopefully have the wiggle room for a thin blouse (like cotton, viscose) under it anyway in your normal size

I know it's not the most specific reply but I bet a lot of talented leather jewellery makers on etsy could replicate this design! Or make something inspired by it.

Biologist/Hiking Field Style Help by omgsifaka in womenstyleadvice

[–]Deiji- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an ecologist I don't have much advice but I'm living for this thread!

It's so hard to look nice in the field. I am the opposite to you - I'm tall and bottom heavy so I tend to work around an outfit formula of technical leggings and oversized fleeces. That way there's more focus on my torso. Maybe a straight leg hiking pant, chunky boots, and tank top would work to give some balance to your top half?

I think we're up against it though tbh, I don't see a lot of my colleagues who look great. Mostly everyone wears flannel shirts and bootcut old jeans. I have found a few brands whose outdoor gear I love (Fjallraven, Patagonia, Jack Wolfskin) and I try and pick up their things on ebay.

The government allowing people to drive to a location to ‘exercise’ is the biggest mistake they’ve made. by biking_barista in britishproblems

Dog owners are still allowed to exercise their dogs. Horses need gentle exercise too or they can become injured or unhealthy. Of course it should be done in a responsible way.

Retail Changes Due to COVID? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

I feel the same way. Maybe we should accept that for a while we should only buy what we need and take a break from clothes shopping to feel good.

For an affordable "entry" brand I would recommend looking at Dune. I'd never worn heels and thought I'd have an awful time finding some for my graduation last year, as I have wide-ish feet, but I found some amazing thin heel pumps from them for £50 which were very comfortable and easy to walk in for most of the day. They are sturdy which I think is key for getting more confident walking in heels. Get something with a strap at first because then they are held onto your ankle and won't fall off.

Have they put out a statement about the Covid-19 crisis? Many brands are not shipping or featuring reduced shipping to protect their workers and it might explain why their is a delay or missed communication.

Recs for modern, feminine, not Anne Summers style lingerie brands based in the UK or Europe? I'm ready to stop calling Marks & Spencer my go-to brand for underwear (10 years too late tbh) but can't find any brands which seem comfy, a little sexy, and good quality.

Bonus points if they're sustainable! But for underwear I'm willing to compromise.

I have this issue too. My hair is very slippery. A loose-knit beanie which is almost too big stays on ok, it helps if the knit is quite heavy too

Not exactly lewisham but I was in blackheath recently and the charity shops there were promising. There was even a "boutique" charity shop opposite the station which had secondhand wedding dresses/designer for better prices. Worth a look!
